Hi everyone,
I've been doing some experimenting with screen sharing to help our pilots in Nicaragua and Haiti. They're having problems with twenty kids seeing the teachers laptop screen.
Here's what I've found ...
FOR THE TEACHER XO:
1) open up etoys on one XO, with the project you want to share 2) pause any scripts to make your life easier 3) click the white circle with the black dot in the toolbar 4) choose "make a badge" 5) when all other XOs have joined, you can safely delete the "buddy" holder
FOR EACH OTHER XO: 1) click the neighborhood key (third from top-left) 2) find the shooting star and choose "join" from it 3) etoys should open, then show a "badge" with the teachers XO name 4) click the "S" button and a a little copy of the teacher screen should appear 5) click "1x1" to make the teacher screen bigger 6) move the pointer to the upper right corner and tell them not to move it (too confusing)
You should now be able to use the teacher XO and have it replicated on the other XOs. In testing, I've found it can take about 15 to 20 seconds for the other XOs to catch up, though this varies based upon how much activity is happening from the teacher XO. Sometimes its instantaneous. In general, pause scripts when you can and plan your movements ... it'll speed things up.
You can either broadcast from one mentor's XO to the other mentors, and assemble the kids around each, or you can try full broadcast. I tested with ten XOs sharing and there was no noticeable slowdown. You might experiment with one XO sharing to four XOs, then those four sharing to five XOs. Might speed things up.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

One further point ... if the teacher's badge disappears off the screen (since the stack vertically and disappear off the bottom), then you can get it back by clicking "Make a badge" then choosing the teachers name.
Etoys developers ... could we get a better display here? Being able to see more than four badges on the screen at a time would be good :)
Thanks, Tim

We removed "make a badge" because they pop up automatically now. Come to think of it, we should revisit the share button's help balloon text.

The current design uses a flap, but its layout still does not adapt. Maybe someone better-versed in Morphic layout could take a look:

Thank you for writing it up, Tim!

Yes, and closing viewers, etc. should help.
The speed largely depends on how much display update is happening. To get the sense of it, you can see it in the followinw way (not connecting to other unit):
- Launch Etoys. - Hit alt+, to get the show source menu. - Go from 'help...' to 'preferences...' to get the preferences panel. - search for "damage" to get the debugShowDamage preference. Turn it on.
Now, there will be some areas on screen that is flashing. The area roughly equates to the network traffic needed. You can see what kind of activity, or what kind of widget overlap cause more.

I couldn't tell what you meant by full broadcast (and "assemble the kids around each"). Can you elaborate?

Full broadcast ... one teacher XO sharing to 20 student XOs (1 to 20)
Assemble around each ... having small groups watch individual XOs (1 to 5 times 4) -- Timothy Falconer http://bigfractaltangle.com 610-393-1889 mobile

Screen sharing is fully broken since we switched to tubes, and never worked reliably anyway. It will be disabled in the coming release:

Will screen sharing make a comeback? We may hold off on updates in some places until, if so.
