I just finished moving the binary content out of git, which reduces the initial checkout size from more than 200 MB to less than 200 KByte. The content is now in svn and updated automatically when building (initial download less than 20 MB compressed) [*].
Simplest for you is to just
rm -rf sugar-jhbuild/source/etoys
and then
sugar-jhbuild buildone squeak sugar-jhbuild buildone etoys

To commit, you need to 'svn switch --relocate ...' from http to svn+ssh.

[*] It would be nicer if the svn checkout was performed during "jhbuild update", maybe some kind soul could add a module option to jhbuild to run a post-checkout script.
