modules, plugins, primitives, and MIDIPlugin

Can someone briefly explain how MIDIPlugin is supposed to work? In the code for SimpleMIDIPort I see the following method. > primMIDIOpenPort: portNum readSemaIndex: readSemaIndex > interfaceClockRate: interfaceClockRate "Open the given MIDI port. If > non-zero, readSemaIndex specifies the index in the external objects > array of a semaphore to be signalled when incoming MIDI data is > available. I'm guessing that the line "<primitive: 'primitiveMIDIOpenPort' module: 'MIDIPlugin'> self" is call to something external to the current squeak image. When I try to execute the primMIDIOpenPort method I get a "primitivefailed" error message. Is this because my current image can't find the external resource? I'm running Ubuntu 7.04, and in the Squeak directory there is file called "SqueakPlugin.image". I tried copying that to same directory with my squeak image file, but it doesn't help. Am I supposed to somehow load the plugin into my image before invoking the method? Or do I have to compile my own VM with the MIDIPlugin source code to get this working?

Software computer

Hi, When trying to explain the Squeak 'image' file to young learners and non-tech friends, the term 'software computer' popped into my mind. Squeak allows one to create a 'software computer' that holds text, sounds and pictures. It is a computer that you can carry along on a floppy, hard-disk or USB flash memory. Just as we use microscope to look into minute stuff, we use a physical computer (and squeak vm) to look into our software computer and make changes to it. The computer can be used to record sounds, make drawings, access web-sites or chat with others and so on. This computer can even hang or crash like a physical computer :-). But unlike physical machines, perfect copies (images) are easy to make and share with friends. If the computer breaks down, you can send it for 'repairs' over email while continuing to work on a older copy. One can create potentially infinite varieties of copies without worrying about hazardous waste or recycling. Each copy will be a 'perfect image' and we dont have to worry about loose nuts or bolts :-). I tried this metaphor on some (unsuspecting) folks and they could get it faster than when I used the book or toy metaphor. One can't crash a book by coloring it, for instance, so they dont see a need to snapshot an image often. For most people, "toys" are not for serious work, while Squeak can be used to produce serious essays or music too. Is the metaphor appropriate? Subbu

Code browsing

Hello there, I have noticed that in the pre built developer images that Damien provides, there is a version of OmniBrowser that has extra stuff, like a search bar on top and what seems to be automatic categories on the method pane. I wanted to know if this is part of a new OmniBrowser or if it is an extra package. The reason is that i don't really like it, because it makes browsing through code much slower, it takes a quite long when you click on a different class than the one you are currently browsing, it even shows a progress bar ! So, really my question is the following: I like Damien's pre built images, but I would like to remove this package (if possible) that makes OmniBrowser so slow. Is it possible?

DIfferent OS X VMs

Can someone explain the differences between the two branches of VM on offer at ftp://ftp.squeak.org/current_stable/mac/ ? I understand that the 3.8 (yellow icon) branch is based on John McIntosh's work found at http://www.smalltalkconsulting.com/squeak.html and that the 3.9 (blue icon) branch appears to be Ian Piumarta's work from http://www.squeakvm.org/unix/ , but I can't find any information as to which VM should be preferred and for what reasons. Well, I do know that the new (great!) true-type font integration requires John's VM, but I wonder are there any other key differences? Thanks, Michael

Setting Breakpoints to Read Code

Hi all, I am new to Squeak and its debugging interface. I am trying to get a handle on Seaside by setting breakpoints on the methods in the example apps. Is there a way to bulk set breakpoints for all classes and methods in the Seaside package(or any other package) ? I would like to see exactly what code is being executed at any given time. Is there an easier way? Thanks...
