Answering a question: Are messages objects? Running into a problem with sendTo:

I was trying to explain in a question on Smalltalk (on Quora.com) how messages are also objects, and I'm running into a bit of a problem in trying to demonstrate this in either Squeak or Pharo. I started off using a simple example: '5' asInteger --> 5 I can do the same thing with: (Message selector: #asInteger) sendTo: '5' --> 5 This all works fine. The response I got back from the person I was trying to convince was that since I'm using syntax to create and send a message (using sendTo: with a Message class), it's not really a message, because if a constructed message with Message is a message, then why use syntax to send "sendTo:" to it? He contends it's an object being used to represent a message. The actual message gets sent in the process of evaluation (I suppose he thinks the message is "unwrapped" from Message, and is sent under the covers). I was going to try the following, to perhaps be more convincing (though I don't know if this is a lost cause re. convincing), but I ran into a problem. I tried translating the 2nd expression above into more explicit terms, and I'm running into an exception I can't explain. To me, what I'm doing is equivalent to the 2nd expression, but Smalltalk disagrees. First version: | m1 m2 | m1 := Message selector: #asInteger. m2 := Message selector: #sendTo argument: '5'. m2 sendTo: m1. I also tried the following: (Message selector: #sendTo argument: '5') sendTo: (Message selector: #asInteger) In both cases, in both Squeak and Pharo, it throws up an exception saying: "Message(Object)>>doesNotUnderstand: #sendTo" (Squeak) or "Instance of Message did not understand #sendTo" (Pharo). This is bizarre to me, because if I look at Message in a browser, I can clearly see sendTo: is an instance method. Also, if it wasn't an instance method, then my very first example wouldn't have worked. I suspect I'm running into some underlying mechanics of how messages are sent, and how object state works in expressions. Is this a bug? Am I missing something in how I'm using sendTo:? Squeak and the SoundPlugin in cog VM

Dear Lists! I have written a VM SoundPlugin for OpenBSD's native sound system sndio. Which means that now I have sound in Squeak on this platform. However I am a bit struggling with the sound quality of SampledSound's like in the eToys SoundLibrary. Those produce an echo effect when played and I have been unable to determine the cause. However the Bach fugue Tests sound perfect so I am suspecting some miscalculations in sample data somewhere on the way. As I have been trying to confirm the 'normal' behaviour on Linux I stumbled over issues with the sound plugins on my ArchLinux box: None of them work. ALSA, OSS or Pulse Audio plugins error out in different stages of the drivers. Am I the only one? What's the last known good state of those? What's the last known good state of sound output for the SoundLibrary SampledSounds? I have tried with latest master and trunk of both opensmalltalk-vm and Squeak. I am grateful for any hints. Once that works I will propose patches to the opensmalltalk-vm code base. Not strongly related, but did you take a look at WindowAcrobatics? I love them to keep overview of many, many open windows. Another feature is multiple "tabs" per browser window, see the preferences. Have much fun with Squeak! Bookmarks in System Browser?

Hi all! I am always jumping around in the Systembrowser searching for suitable messages to use. And I would like to jump back from where I started the search, which is mostly the package and class I am currently editing. Is there a bookmark like support in the System Browser I can use? A second window might be an option but it just clutters my small laptop screen, so easy jumping inside one browser window would be perfect. Has anyone added such a feature already? How do you do it? What font do you use in macOS ?

Hi, I am quite happy with the font I can get in Unix but, paradoxically enough, I can't get what I want in macOS, where graphics usually is far better. So, the point is, in macOS the only font I can see well (except for the Accu*) is the "Bitmap DejaVu Sans". I use it usually at "size" 12, but I would like to have it a little smaller, unfortunately the next available size is 9, which is too small for me. I tried to read all what I could on the web. As far as I understand Bitmap DejaVu Sans works better because it was "handmade". And for the same reason, to have it at a different pointsize it must be wholly handcrafted again each time. TTF do not work well because we don't have a renderer inside Squeak, there appear to be external plugins to use Cairo, but I don't find them for macOS. (excuse my barbaric approximations, I am totally profane in the world of fonts). So my questions are: What font do you use ? Are you able to get something good at different scales ? I don't need multi-lang stuff, ASCII is enough. I could make another pointsize or two for the "Bitmap DejaVu Sans" but I need some point to start, some documentation or example. bye Nicola
