Leslie Nielsen explains how to declare variable types in squeak. "surely you can't be serious?!" " "of course i'm serious... And stop calling me Shirley". --Leslie Nielsen -airplane- The way you declare a serious variable type in squeak is to write an instance message for the class Joking that does nothing when asked #surelyYouCantBeSerious and maybe another for the class Serious that tells you to stop calling it shirley. ;-) Then in any method needing a type check you just ask the variable the question and proceed. QED. Handling keypresses in Morphic.

Hey, gang: I'm trying to figure out the best way to--well, this is probably blasphemy but--use Squeak as I would a more traditional development environment. To wit: Normally, when coding, I code, compile if necessary, then run. At that point, my development environment fades and I can focus on the results. In this situation, I'm writing morphic objects and I want to be able to control these through the keyboard. I think I need to use #handlesKeyboard, #keyDown, etc., but have found that not to work. And rather annoyingly, since I'm running things from the transcript, what usually happens is I wipe out my transcript code by typing without realizing it's still focussed. But then I thought, well, focus floats with the mouse anyway, so I probably don't want to design it so that the individual morphics respond to keystrokes (think "game" rather than "businss app"). Better to capture the keystrokes and convert them into commands that get sent to the various objects. So I create a morph that acts as a command center, and in the initialize I do this: ActiveHand addKeyboardListener: self; keyboardFocus: self. which makes it so that the command morph gets the keyboard commands and is set to have the focus. This initially caused some trouble since I apparently also needed to implement handleListenEvent. Because I didn't I got into a pickle where I couldn't use Squeak for all the DNUs that were popping up. This fixed it: handleListenEvent: evt That's the whole thing. I'm not sure why I need to handle the generic when I'm only interested in the key events. Now I want to handle events, starting with cursor keys. When I look at the up key in the debugger, it looks, rather pleasingly like this: [keyDown '<up>'] but obviously I can't test for that: (evt = [keyDown '<up>']) ifTrue: ... Actually, that wasn't obvious. I tried it and it didn't work. So, do I have to test for the key code? Thanks for any thoughts! ===Blake===

Hello, we (Nicolas Butarelli and Claudio Acciaresi) are from Buenos Aires, Argentina, we’re trying to make a thesis at the University of Buenos Aires. Our initial idea is to reimplement a model using traits, we would like to know what your opinions are (if you think that this is useful, etc) about this idea and which models do you think that would be nice to rethink using traits. [survey] Pair Programming in Free and Open Source Projects

Hello fellow hackers, as part of our course at the Software Engineering class at the Free University of Berlin/Germany we are holding a survey and looking for developers to participate. Our research context is Free and Open Source Software with a focus on (Distributed) Pair Programming[1]. We try to explore how familiar you are with Pair Programming in itself, if you have tried to use Pair Programming in one of your projects, which tools you are familiar with for communication and (Distributed) Pair Programming and how well they worked. Executing an external program

What are the possibility to execute an external program from Squeak? And portable for sebveral OS host? The programm I want to execute will do so briefly. I read aboud OSProcess, CommandShell but I am not sure where it is best to look at. Hilaire

release image

Hi every one, I am having trouble in finding any tutorial about making a release image to be distributed. I'd like to know how to clean an image as much as possible. For example, I have a application with no gui, just some kind of batch application and I'de like to disable any other squeak process and remove any class I don't use to achieve the best performance I can.
