Thanks. I'll try to start with the indexing table for each character first. Anyway do you know how to split string based on more than 1 character, for example I want to split string based on some punctuation. SocketStream

If I just want a simple "server" that listens for a text message on a port, does something, and sends back a text message, do I just need to somehow: 1. Create a Socket and listen on the port. 2. Create a SocketStream on: theSocket. 3. Somehow fork and wait for input, reading it in using the SocketStream? I just want to make sure I am on the right track while trying to find the magic incantation... Thanks, Rob

lost socket

Hello, I've been playing around with the Socket class, and the code I was running in an EToys script crashed a few times (I did try it in a workspace first, it was the code I wrote to talk to other players that crashed), and the temporary sockets it created never got destroyed. Is this going to cause problems for me later? Thanks, Aidan

Hi guys, I am just beginner in Smaltalk and I have some problem with collection in smalltalk. For this problem I have to define the value of an alphabetic character based on its location in the alphabet. So ‘a’ and ‘A’ each have value 1, ‘b’ and ‘B’ each have 2, etc. Non-alphabetic characters can be considered to have value 0. The value of a word is the sum of the value of all its characters. So ‘Smalltalk’ has value 101 and ‘abc’ has value 6. A dollar word is a word whose value is 100. I want to add a method to the String class that returns all the dollar words in the string. Skewing Forms in Squeak V2

Hi, I'd like to skew the graphics of a Form, is there an easy way to do this in v2 ? What I want is to take the rectangle from a normal form, transform it into an arbitrarily-defined quadrilateral, and then paint on the screen. I saw that WarpBlt does something like this.. but it maps a quadrilateral section of a form onto a rectangle.

Adv. Morphic Tutorials

Hi all, I was trying to get a grip of Morphic for the last several weeks. Without much luck. I was doing several Morphic tutorials, checked the Squeak By Example book and the Maloney chapter in the Guzdial/Rose book. But all just cover the very basics of Morphic by combining some geometrical shapes or the very basic counter tutorial (Maloney has some more advanced aspects, but really not much). What I could use now is a more advanced Morphic tutorial for building like real more complex UIs - actual applications - but smaller widgets are also something I have to look after. An overview of the most important/common Morphs out there would also help a lot, but as far as I understood this doesn't exist yet!? Looking at the code alone doesn't really do it for me, since, besides Morphic, I am also a Smalltalk/Squeak beginner. Are there any valuable resources I have overlooked so far? Thanks, Matthias

web browser plug-in

Hello, My web browser doesn't seem to acknowledge the Squeak plug-in. I built and installed the VM from source, and then ran npsqueakregister that was installed in /usr/local/lib/squeak/. I'm using Firefox 2 on Debian etch, and it doesn't list that as an installed plug-in, and when I try to look at one of the demo Squeak projects on www.squeakland.org, it tells me that I don't have to plug-in installed. Any ideas? I couldn't find anything helpful on the web. Thanks, Aidan

What do the symbols, next to methods, in the OmniBrowser system browser mean?

I have only just started to use the OB based browser and I can't find much in the way of documentation. Looking through the methods, and their hierarchy it seems as though the following applies: - Nothing: new method in this chain, i.e. the method could exist in other classes but not in this particular chain of inheritance. - Upward orange triangle: method is inherited and overridden in this class - Downward orange triangle: method is overridden in a subclass - Two orange triangles (up and down): overrides and is overridden in a subclass - Green up arrow: calls the same method in its super class - Blue triangle: Self should not implement or subClassResponsibility - Green plus: don't know, can't work this one out - Red flag: has a halt message in the code - Spanner: shows that the code needs to be returned to, i.e. under construction So, is my understanding correct? What does the green plus symbol mean, and... is there anyway to get the browser to display all the methods an object responds too, i.e. its fully inherited list? Cheers AB
