But it is possible to use it in that manner, and many people use it for device control and run it without an operating system (google "SqueakNOS" for example). With respect to your original question, I am not currently using USB serial ports with Squeak or Cuis, but I believe that you can do so as follows: - Load the class SerialPort into Cuis. You can file this out from the latest Squeak trunk image, and I have attached a copy of it to this mail. - Use the latest virtual machine for your platform. This will have the necessary support for accessing named serial devices. - In Cuis, make an instance of SerialDevice and use it to open your USB serial device and read and write to it. This will probably look something like this: myUsbPort := SerialPort new. myUsbPort openPort: '/dev/someUsbDevice'. myUsbPort nextPutAll: 'some data to send'. responseString := myUsbPort readString. Cuis USB?

Thanks. This book provides a very good introduction to Squeak, and I like having a paper copy on the shelf (I got mine from Lulu). I am CCing the beginners list also. Event handling: mouse click vs. mouse drag

Hi, for a UI, I need to distinguish between mouse clicks and mouse drags (mouse down, move, up). Is there a rather simple way to do this in Squeak? Starting Cuis

All I get when downloading Cuis from http://www.jvuletich.org/Cuis/Index.html left panel upper, is a .zip file with sources, changes, image, and license files for both PC's and Mac's. I don't find an .exe or .com file to start Cuis. Where is that located? Thanks, Kirk Fraser

OrderedCollection if imageMorphs

I want to put add an imageMorph on top of another imageMorph. I can do this with the following method (note SymbolBlank is an imageMorph MyBoard>>addSymbol |im| im := SymbolBlank new. self addMorph: im. im topLeft: 2@2. I want to enhance this so I can choose one of a collection of imageMorphs to add. I created a class, SymbolArray, that is a subclass of OrderedCollection with the following initialize method. Each of the items I'm adding (SymbolBlank, SymbolGet, etc) is an imageMorph. SymbolArray>>initialize super initialize. self add: SymbolBlank new. self add: SymbolGet new. self add: SymbolProcess new. self add: SymbolPut new. self add: SymbolIf new. self add: SymbolWhile new. Then I tried to modify the addSymbol method as show below. When I do, I get the following error message which sounds like I don't have an element at index 1. SymbolArray(OrderedCollection)>>errorNoSuchElement SymbolArray(OrderedCollection)>>at: | sa si | sa := SymbolArray new. si := sa at: 1. self addMorph: si. si topLeft: 2@2. I hope someone can help me figure out how to accomplish what I want to do.

Hi Paul, I did what you said and it came right up, but there seems to be a couple of problems. I'm getting syntax error windows intermittently popping up when I select methods or classes in the System Browser. And, this is what I display for the comment for Class Integer (displayed in octal here) in the System Browser, but instead of newlines (\012) I'm getting boxy graphical characters (see attachment). That was wrong. the first command should have been sudo /bin/sh INSTALL and not sudo ./config.guess The INSTALL file explains everything if you read it. This will not work on a 64 bit OS. Squeak installation

Hi, I'm on a Linux(Fedora)/PC platform. I downloaded the following to a folder I created named Squeak: Squeak-3.10-1 (a folder containing i686-pc-linux-gnu, config.guess, and INSTALL) Squeak3.10.2-7179-basic.changes Squeak3.10.2-7179-basic.image SqueakV39.sources Not sure how to proceed from here. Docs in INSTALL file say "Fetch the archive/s that you need and then unpack it/them in the same directory. This will create a subdirectory called Squeak-X.Y containing a hierarchy that mirrors the installed locations of the various files." but no such file Squeak-X.Y was created, unless it's the directory listed above. What must I to do to finish the install? Michael

Starting Seaside Online

I downloaded the one-click experience of Seaside which when running tells me: The Seaside application server is already running on port 8080. Point your browser to http://localhost:8080/seaside to give it a try. So far so good. Now how do I get it to work under WAMP (Windows Apache etc.) which easily runs my html websites as virtual hosts? I have tried many bits of advice which have failed so far on my system, including an exact copy of what works for another user who may be using Apache directly without WAMP or have other setup differences. The WAMP server expects something under a website folder pointed to in the Vhost files but the only thing I could think of is an html redirect which works on localhost but fails on internet. I assume once I can get a sample Seaside application like sushiNet to appear online, I'll be able to start developing my own web pages using Seaside. Thank you.
