Anonymous subclasses?

Hello all, I want to make an anonymous subclass, or a copy of (either way) a subclass of Object. I've been googling around looking for an example of an anonymous subclass. I haven't had luck with anything I've found. It's possible that there's something I'm missing conceptually, because I've read through various examples, but they all seem to do directly with Behavior or Class. I tried various combinations of things with both of the approaches I found. Some of them hung the image, with others the #primitiveChangeClassTo: would fail. I read the comment there, and am aware that using it is reckless behavior. I see that Smalltalk compactClassesArray gives me a list of the compact classes. I don't seem to understand the format part. I've noticed that certain classes (e.g. Array) are declared "variable subclasses" but that's it. I googled and didn't turn up anything that seemed to help me grok it. Tried: Class format. Interval>>copyFrom:to:

Could someone explain why: (5 to: 100010) copyFrom: 3 to: 1000000 returns an Array rather than an Interval? Returning an Interval is more intuitive to me since the copyFrom:to: message is being sent to an Interval. Of course, for the the example above at least, it is more efficient as well. Two Questions Search and ORM

First question, where is the best place to search this mailing list. I know the question I am about to ask has been asked before but I can't seem to find a link in the mailing list to use search from? Squeak has ODBC support, but it's single threaded and blocks the VM when querying, so while it works for demos and low traffic apps against pretty much any database, I wouldn't try anything too big with it; it just can't scale. Debug within an error catching block

Greetings. In one area of code, I need to set a break point and do some debugging. This code is called deeply within a block that is wrapped up so that the end user does not see errors that occur. In very simplified form, it is like this: [ self error: 'Throwing an error' ] ifError: [:err :rcvr | Transcript show: 'Trapped error'] When I 'do it', this example will always trap the error instead of breaking into the debugger (which, quit clearly, it is designed to do.) While I shudder to think of how easily it could be abused, there is no way to break into a debugger anyway, is there (without finding and disabling the outer block that is sent ifError)? Perhaps a hypothetical self untrappableError or self bringUpTheDebuggerPlease? Cheers, Clinton

converting a string to a do-able.

Hi, I am a total newby so I am probably missing something obvious. I am trying to make a small program where the user can type in simple formula as a text string and get the answer. So '3 plus 5' gives the answer 8. I am having trouble converting the 'plus' into +. Is there as asNumber equivalent for maths symbols or anything like that? Sorry if this question makes no sense.

loading Shout into trunk?

I'd like to see syntax coloring in my Workspaces in Squeak4.2-10732-alpha.image like used to be available with SHWorkspace. I successfully did the following from the Help/Extending the System: "Omnibrowser, including Refactoring engine" (Installer ss project: 'MetacelloRepository') install: 'ConfigurationOfOmniBrowser'. ((Smalltalk at: #ConfigurationOfOmniBrowser) project perform: #lastVersion) load: #( Dev ). Anyone know what is required to load Shout? I can doit (Installer ss project: 'MetacelloRepository') install: 'ConfigurationOfShout'. to get ConfigurationOfShout into the image, but I'm unsure of what to do next. Thx fr any tips, Ken G. Brown

Loading in images

Hi guys, How does one import images into SmallTalk? I have a .jpeg file that I created using the paint widget in the widgets shared tab. However I want this to load into my program at another point, is it a case of using a SketchMorph?? If somebody could just point me in the right direction? Stringing a string together!

Hi guys, I am wondering how you can pull different datatypes into a string, for example im trying to do the following with a StringMorph; StringMorph contents: 'Text Stuff Here: ' + SmallInteger asString Hard to explain myself but in PHP it would be; $finalvalue = "Player: " + $myint; and in C would be cout << "Player: " << myint << endl; Thanks!
