Using text morph to save characters

This may not be an appropriate way to save characters in the order they are generated. This isn't working. Perhaps there's a better way? Two scripts: (1) clear1: empties out a TextMorph (2) addChar: inserts an 'a' or a 'b' at cursor position. Advances cursor position. Michael

Looking for help with Nebraska

I am trying to understand Nebraska and am confused by the role of badges and how they work with chat and server mode. Also ran into problems with server mode crashing. I have posted three Nebraska related bug reports on Mantis. Is anyone using Nebraska successfully who is willing to get with me on IRC and discuss how to get it working? -- Gary Dunn Honolulu

Hi Offray, It is good to hear from you! Your question about images fading is beyond me but I have had some success using scale factor increase/decrease and show/hide to make an effect easier for me and my young students to do. Since your topic is art, may I mention a recent student project? My students looked at paintings by Miró and used Etoys to create new paintings, dynamic collages, puzzles, and games. Maybe the art teacher would like to see them. My students spent 4 or 5 class periods on the project starting with looking at about 100 paintings I cut from a book. They chose their favorite and decided what kind of Etoys project they would make. They have been smart using Etoys tools like copy and re-size, and objects and layers of objects to achieve Miró effects. It was a study in depth that they enjoyed and when you look at the whole collection you can see the influence of the artist. Hi all, I would like to create some kind of artistic project on Pharo/Squeak. The idea is to make some images appear and vanish slowly after a while. Browsing the net I have found this code on pharo to change the background: |form| form := (Form fromBinaryStream: (HTTPSocket httpGet: 'http://ubuntu.ecchi.ca/wallpapers/10.04/' , 'Maraetaibeforesunrise.jpg')). World backgroundImage: form layout: #scaled and I imagine that something similar is needed to load any image from Internet or hard disk changing the path and making it appear on the screen. I have tried this: x := ImageMorph new. x image: (Form fromFileNamed: '/home/offray/Temp/myFile.png'). x openInWorld. and is working, but I can get the halos on this image on pharo using Ctrl + Shif + Click on Pharo, but is not working. Introductory documentation for OSC in Squeak

Hi all, I'm using Physical Etoys in Squeak for Linux (0.7 version) for interact with an arduino board. Other people is using vvvv for their work with sensors. I would like to use OSC for enabling communication with them, but I can't find any newbie documentation on that subject, in fact, I only find on the web that OSC is supported by Squeak and is a nice protocol, even proudctos like Musical Objects that use it, but not many details. Any introductory information on Squeak and OSC will be appreciated and if I can get details on time to make proper communication, even better. Fill gradient on desktop / world

Hi, I'm in 4.2. When I switch the desktop to a gradient fill, I get a dark gray-light gray ("graydient" ha). On the same world menu, I have the option to "change first color" and "change second color." These bring up color requesters, but whichever colors I pick don't seem to change the gradient colors. (see http://squeak.preeminent.org/bkgrnd/html/006.shtml -- supposedly the gradient colors are supposed to update in real-time?) How can I change the gradient colors? Also I just noticed that if I opt-click on the desktop, then opt-click on the red menu button, then regular (left) click on the new red menu button that pops up, I get a dNU. thanks tim

smalltalk program execution

Hi guys, I have a some questions about program execution: If I have a text file with some smalltalk code, is it possible to execute that code from the outside of the VM graphical interface? I'm looking a java like execution. Java as smalltalk use a VM to execute the code, but the way java execute the program, some people don't even know this. Due to the nature of smalltalk I don't know if what I'm asking is possible. -- these are other questions I have --- How are applications deployed in smalltalk? Once I have the image I can see how things are implemented. How do you do hide implementation that probably don't want other to see? Is there something written about this that you can suggest? I'm just looking to decrease my smalltalk ignorance. I really like this language, and I'm wondering day after day, what cause its extinction, I've read about what java did and that stuff, but I think there should be more than marketing stuff. The questions I'm asking are some the reasons I see that prevent me to use smalltalk on my day to day job, are these reason the cause that this great language(system) is not being used more widely? Using SAX to get the contents of a node

I am trying to use the SAXHandler (Pharo 1.2.1) to parse a delicious rss feed. I want to get the contents of a tag, i.e. the text that lies between the opening tag and the closing tag. Thanks to Laurent's excellent video I understand how to access the attributes (using startElement:attributes:), but I can't work out how to get the intra-tag text. I am sure it is a simple call, but could someone point me in the right direction? Cheers Andy
