The objective is to gave to user a possibility to store his sport performance. So I have design a Class Performance(with PerformanceCollection) and I wanted to let things like TimeLaps, Date, Distance, and so on. for a later implementation (if we wanted to add others). So I provide a Measure abstract class. Hence I add a dictionary in my Performance with the class for key and the instance for value: for example: Performance>>addMeasure: aMeasure dictionaryOfMesure at: aMeasure class put: aMeasure Now I have to bring them in a Seaside UI so I guess that Visitor Pattern ( ;-) ) can help me but my complex structure mess my brain. So I ask you if you think that can be possible(and how) or other pattern can be more suitable for this problem. Thank you for your attention (:

Magritte default single option

Hello, >From my prevous problem I could be able to ssolve itwith Magritte Framwork. So I see a good implementation of Visitor pattern. But reading the exercises I block on a question. I don't know how to set the default single option. After halting de acceptMagritte selector on MASingleOptionDescription I couldn't find where my componant is render and where the default option is set. Thanks for your thoughts. I solved it by putting borders inside the playfield and adjusting the x and y if the rocket overlaps the border. While I don't think it is the most elegant solution, it works. Randy suggested enabling the fence. That appears to be the default setting and doesn't seem to have an impact. Of course, it could be something I am doing wrong. I have added some explosives that need to be avoided and almost have this working the way I want. I am stuck on how to make a do-while loop in eToys. I know how to do it in squeak code based on Stef Ducasse's Squeak book. When I typed this code into the textual code view and convert to tiles I loose it. Can any one point me in the right direction? Thanks so much. I have to tell you it was a lot of fun! I did a few things that sort of worked so I thought I'd share with you what I did. The first thing I thought of was to limit the height of the ship by creating a script that said if you go above the top of the play field then set the Y coordinate to the top of the play field. This didn't work very well as I'm sure you found out. It was kinda fun in that when you get to the limit it does slow down, but right after it sets the ship to the top boundary, it increases the position by the ySpeed variable, so off the top it shoots. My next thought was to have some kind of escape velocity which would make it harder and harder to move past the top. This would have the effect of slowing down the ship before it reached the top. This was worked ok too, but allowed the ship to fall much too quickly once the acceleration was 0. I then thought maybe if we set the top to reset to the top minus the ySpeed then it would bounce off the top with bigger bounces the higher the acceleration is. This was ok but kinda annoying. I tried setting the ySpeed to 1 when the ship reached the top and this gave it a much more pleasing bounce. But it still has the same problem of loosing too much acceleration at the top and falling like a rock when you ease up. Try your own variations and feel free to let us know what you came up with. I'm interested. Maybe someone else can make some suggestions. For the bottom I recommend you create a blown up ship that displays if you hit the ground! Anyway I had fun!! I built the Lunar Lander project from the squeakland.org website. Now I am trying to add some more functionality on my own. How do I force the rocket to stay within the playfield? I am guessing the solution involves obtrudes or bounce but so far my attempts have failed. Also, how do I put a background graphic inside the playfield? Thanks Sandy

I've never found a straight forward "this is how you make a simple UI" tutorial for Squeak. Does anyone have a pointer? The sort of thing I am looking for would explain how to build a UI with a couple of input fields, a couple of buttons, and a display field for output.

Disussion on creating a new class

Hi All I'd like to discuss on the way of creating a new class in smalltalk in general... I hope I'll be clear enough... :) When I first start, I found the way of creating classes not that straightforward... Probably because this implies a minimum understanding of smalltalk... So, here is the template to create a class when having a browser opened on a selected category: Object subclass: #NameOfSubclass instanceVariableNames: '' classVariableNames: '' poolDictionaries: '' category: 'Kernel-Objects' so, the class Object (more precisely the class class) receives the message : Class>>subclass:instanceVariableNames:classVariableNams:poolDictionaries:category: and uses a ClassBuilder that will return the newly created class. Some things bothers me: ******* if we want to create a class in a selected category, we change #NameOfSubclass in the symbol #NewNameClass using a symbol is not obvious (for me)... I'd prefer something like: NewClass subclassOf: aClass ; --> (Superclass) instanceVariableNames: '' ; classVariableNames: '' ; poolDictionaries: '' ; category: 'KernelTests-Methods' ; yourself But NewClass is not (yet) an object, and it's interesting to see how smalltalk consider it.. actually this is nothing, and smalltalk detect it while parsing the evaluated text selection ... it is varName (a string from the selection) in the following message to Parser: Parser>> variable | varName varStart varEnd | varStart _ self startOfNextToken + requestorOffset. ***varName _ self advance.*** varEnd _ self endOfLastToken + requestorOffset. ^ encoder encodeVariable: varName sourceRange: (varStart to: varEnd) ifUnknown: [self correctVariable: varName interval: (varStart to: varEnd)] What I'd like is to be able to create from an UnknowObject (that could be a subclass of UndefinedObject ? would it be problematic, interesting ?) nb: There is actually a way to create a class from the execution of an unknown text selection. Excuting NewTerm (do-it) opens a menu that gives the possibility to create a new class (this only works if the selection start with an uppercase and it's done before excuting by the parser). ******** Also, if we want to subclass a given class (which is frequent) it's not direct as we need to change in the template the receiver into the given class and the first argument of #subclass:instanceVariableNames:.... in the symbol #NewNameClass. Yet, It exists a more straight way to do that by right clicking on a selected class in the browser and then choosing 'new class'. And so it changes the template and wait for us to accept once proper parameters are entered... nb: I think 'new subclass' should be more appropriate? - new class should only allow to create a subclass of object. ******** Last, I think that when created, the symbol with the name should be instead directly the class...Not so easy to figure out from what we see... Something like: SequenceableCollection subclass: OrderedCollection --> (the class, not the symbol) instanceVariableNames: 'array firstIndex lastIndex' classVariableNames: '' poolDictionaries: '' category: 'Collections-Sequenceable' or: OrderedCollection subclassOf: SequenceableCollection ... An interesting (long) method for class creation is: ClassBuilder>>name:inEnvironment:subclassOf:type:instanceVariableNames: classVariableNames:poolDictionaries:category:unsafe: ********************************************************************************************** So I hope you understood what I've tried to say :) If you have any comments or remarks concerning all that, I'll appreciate having others opinions. To sum up: - using an UnknownObject (and especially UnknownObject>>subclassOf: aClass) - replacing symbols with appropriate classes when possible (when viewing a class definition)... This is list seems more appropriate. I need to process some URLs in a batch with no prior knowledge of whether these URLs will require authentication. Firstly, if I use Url's #retrieveContents for a URL that requires authentication I am prompted for user name and password interactively. I would rather an error was signaled or nil returned. Having looked at the code there doesn't seem to be any way of changing this behaviour without either modifying the code (used elsewhere) or creating a new subclass which I would then have to instantiate directly instead of using Url's #absoluteFromText which I'd rather not do since I may not just be dealing with HTTP. Secondly, if I do dismiss this prompt either by choosing No or Cancel when asked whether I want to enter a user name or password a MIMEDocument is returned which has its contents set to the to the full 401 Unauthorized response including the headers prefixed by "error occured retrieving url <THEURL>: " (done by HttpUrl>>normalizeContent). This looks like two bugs, cancel not actually cancelling the request and the actual response not being parsed correctly. Thanks, Zulq

[Q] Smalltalk book with Squeak

Dear Squeakers I am a complete novice Squeak looking for your advice. First of all, is the book "Smalltalk by Example: the Developer's Guide" available from http://www.iam.unibe.ch/~ducasse/FreeBooks.html useful to learn Squeak. It look like this book is written with VisualWork, but I thought that it might be still useful in learning Smalltalk. Second, can anyone suggest the right way to learn a Squeak? I have read a few online tutorials and one of the books (Squeak: Object-Oriented Design with Multmedia Application), but I do not feel comfortable with Squeak programming. I have many years of OOP programming, mainly used C++/Java, so I do not need to learn the concept of OOP. Can anyone share the tips to become an efficient Squeak programmer? Thanks in advance. port from squeak to vw

Hi all, it's possible to import a Squeak .cs file with some classes into a VisualWorks 7.3 non commercial image, to realize a simple port of an application? I have opened a File Browser in VW and selected the .cs file but the file in button is disabled. I work on Linux i386 version and now i'm testing vw on Linux FC5 on intel processor.
