Brooks -- first off you'll love wxSqueak -- but as to the problem -- you will need to download the windows vm made for wxWidgets. Go to the wxSqueak site http://www.wxsqueak.org/ and at the bottom of page load the win32 VM. Steve

Hi, I have found "subclass:..." message under ClassBuilder so I wonder how do we can call it from Object (i.e. when we make a new "object class")because "Object class" inherit from Class who inherit from ClassDescription who .. Behavior who .. Object. But may be I'm wrong. Thanks for answering Best regards, Mathew

workspace on:file

Hi I was wandering if there is an existing way to have in an image workspaces opened from existing text files... what is usually do in my image is having several renamed worspace with code snippets, tests, and others differents stuffs... I'd like to automate the save on a file and the reading from it when opening... say I decide to use a previous image... but the workspace elements are updated to the last ones... is there a way to do that ? (hope you see what I mean ;)) Thanks Cédrick

Problems starting demos in wxSqueak

I'm at a loss and know it must be something simple(stupid?). I've played with Squeak and worked thru Chamon Liu's Smalltalk Objects and Design and done some tutorials. I thought I'd load wxSqueak and try some of the demos. I'd like to start working with the wxWidgets GUI library. I downloaded to c:\ and unzipped so running in c:\wxsqueak0.4.1-demo directory on WinXP Pro. Because they didn't exist in the wxSqueak download, I copied Squeak.exe and SqueakFFIPrims.dll from a fresh download of "normal" Squeak 3.8. But date on files are 9/23/2004 and 9/24/2004 respectively and Squeak says version is 3.7.1. It comes up with a system browser and a Workspace with two items: Wx whatIsWxWidgets. WxDemoFrame open. Both give callback window: "Error: a primitive has vailed". It fails on WxLib class>> WxVariantNew Also, you get a "hand" cursor which invokes "do it" which you click on either one. I see all the Wx classes, etc., in the browser. Can someone please get me over this hump? Thanks, Brooks

Hi! There is something I don't get the grip on after reading on the maillist. Is there a new GUI on it's way to replace Morph and originaly be inclused in the std image? In that case what is it called? Are there more intressting things to tell about it? Where to get more input? Many thanks! Marcus

reading lines from textfiles on Linux

I'm having a lot of trouble trying to read in one line of text on a Linux system. the commands: | fil lin | fil := CrLfFileStream new. fil open: 'aising/data/technologies.csv' forWrite: False. Transcript cr; show: (fil). fil ascii. Transcript cr; show: 'LineEndConvention = '; show: fil lineEndConvention. fil reopen. lin := fil nextLine. Transcript cr; show: 'lin 1 = '; show: lin. Fail at the attempt to reopen. (Or, alternatively, either an attempt to "fil position: 0" or "fil position: 1". If I don't test the line end convention, the entire file is read into the first line. If I do the test, the result is that the protocol is "lf" (which seems the right answer). If I open the file in a standard text editor, it looks correct, and has 43 lines + an empty 44th line (that I believe is created in th editor). I at first tried to copy the example from the "cookbook" exactly: file := FileStream fileNamed: 'test.txt'. [file atEnd] whileFalse: [line := file nextLine. "Process the line"] (well, I used StandardFileStream rather than FileStream, and I changed the file opening to tmpFile := StandardFileStream open: 'aising/data/technologies.csv' forWrite: False. [tmpFile atEnd] whileFalse: [ temp := tmpFile nextLine. When everything in the file ended up read into the first line, I started trying alternates...so far without success. Any suggestions? I'd try using the code without modifications, but my image doesn't appear to *have* a FileStream class.

Squeak and VisualWorks

I am definitely a Squeak/Smalltalk newbie. I am curious what is the relationship (if there is one) between Squeak and VisualWorks? TIA Sandy
