I should add (explain) that one problem I had with surfing code in Squeak was working out how canvasses and Morphs work with one another. Like when I create a Morph, what creates the associated canvas. I couldn't find how. Apart from the answer I'd appreciate advice on how I should've worked that out for myself. Oh and is it possible to change context menus (right click menus) in the class browser to more prominently show the options I want? When I select a class name and right click, I want to browse, find implementors etc and they're all on the 'more...' secondary list/menu which gets a bit grating the 20th time. I know there's hotkeys but I prefer to drive by mouse unless I'm entering text. The same result is obtained by printing the result of: (Compiler evaluate: #([ Transcript show: 'Some Text' ])) class image 2.5 --> BlockContext image 3.9 --> Array I've been playing a little bit more with Squeak, and I found another strange (to me; please, consider that I am still a newbie) thing. In some lectures by Stephane Ducasse there is an example illustrating the difference between literal arrays and arrays created with new:. In particular, adding the following method to class SmallInteger: m1 | anArray | anArray := #( nil ). (anArray at: 1) isNil ifTrue: [ Transcript show: 'Put 1'; cr. anArray at: 1 put: 1. ] and executing 1 m1 should display the message 'Put 1' only once. And this is how it works... in image 3.9 But if we repeat the experiment in image 3.0, it displays nothing in the Transcript (not even the first execution). Again, I am puzzled by this behavior (I am always assuming that these experiments that behave differently in different Squeak images are standard Smalltalk). One more thing. Perhaps there is people wondering why someone should worry about the behavior of an old image. The answer is that I am using a stripped version of image 3.0 to play with Squeak on a Jornada 720. More recent complete images are too heavy for the J720 (at least that is my experience; any clue on how to improve that?). Well, thanks in advance for your answers Bests Jordi

Hello Bert, hello all, with the information you provided (trank you again) I wanted to see if I really could run Rome in normal Squeak. Unfortunately I'm still unable to do so. I'm sure I'm doing something wrong, but don't know what. Squeak is being unable to find or load the plugin, while Croquet does. Here is exactly what I do to reproduce this: I download Sophie alpha 122201 from location: http://dev.sophieproject.org/downloads/releases/Sophie06122201.zip And download Squeak for Windows from location: http://ftp.squeak.org/current_stable/win/Squeak3.9-win32.zip Unpack them both, and copy all .DLL files from Sophie to Squeak (directory where Squeak.exe is). I overwrite SqueakFFIPrims.dll I open Squeak, open Monticello browser, and add the repository: MCHttpRepository location: 'http://www.squeaksource.com/Rome' user: '' password: '' I load following packages in this order: Name: Rome-Base-JMM.17 Author: JMM Time: 9 November 2006, 5:37:27 pm UUID: 059dade3-705c-11db-bfd6-000d93333b80 Ancestors: Rome-Base-bf.16 Loads fine. No warnings. Name: Rome-Balloon-jl.46 Author: jl Time: 6 September 2006, 2:31:50 pm UUID: d2102272-2e26-409c-bf95-37edc225ec66 Ancestors: Rome-Balloon-jl.45 Loads fine. No warnings. Now when I load this one: Name: Rome-PluginCanvas-JMM.41 Author: JMM Time: 3 November 2006, 12:28:49 pm UUID: e9dab2da-6b79-11db-a2e4-000d93333b80 Ancestors: Rome-PluginCanvas-JMM.40 A warning comes: This package depends on the following classes: CImageResource You must resolve these dependencies before you will be able to load these definitions: CImageResource classSide>>readFrom:type: I "Proceed" and it loads fine (no error or any other messages). Finally, I load: Name: Rome-Demo-bf.32 Author: bf Time: 29 August 2006, 7:39:21 pm UUID: 4e225962-3785-11db-8c12-000d93ca8ba0 Ancestors: Rome-Demo-jl.31 I open a Workspace window and evaluate: Evaluate: RomeDemo demoSophieLogo Result: Error window with "Error: no concrete rome canvas available" (see debug-log as attachment) Evaluate: RomePluginCanvas pluginAvailable Result: false I "Save & Quit" and reopen and retry, same result. Now I try with Croquet... I Download Croquet from location: http://mirror.services.wisc.edu/mirrors/croquet/SDK-1.0/universal.zip I unpack it and again I copy all .DLLs from Sophie to Croquet (into the Croquet.exe directory, again overwriting SqueakFFIPrims.dll) I open Croquet, and go to project "Scratch". Again, I open a Monticello browser, add the repository, open it, load Rome-Base, Rome-Balloon, Rome-PluginCanvas, Rome-Demo. All load fine, this time without any warning whatsoever. I open a Workspace. Evaluate: RomePluginCanvas pluginAvailable Result: true Evaluate: RomeDemo demoSophieLogo Result: (logo is drawn) So, I think something is missing, or I need to do something extra for Squeak to see and use the Rome plugin...? This is caused by the using of SystemWindow in the .pr. Compared to 3.8, SystemWindow in 3.9 is missing all 3 methods with names starting with "spawn", notably: spawnReframeHandle: event and also their senders have changed. It appears to me, this change is to implement resizing in 3.9 by those corner handles, as opposed to anywhere on the Frame Border in 3.8. Not sure whether simply loading the old SystemWindow is the way to go, it depends what one wants as desired functionality. I assume this is an artifact of a broader problem, how to do project load/unload across versions when class api has changed. Do you mind me using your project to file a Mantis report? (Although I may try to create a minimal example) Thanks Milan

I've just introduced some 9th graders to Squeak

Hello. This is my first post to the beginners list. I've been a perpetual beginner since I first found out about Squeak over ten years ago ( can it really be that long ? at least somewhere at the beginning of ver. 1.x ) . Anyway, I'm not a programmer, I'm a musician and an explorer, and currently, a substitute teacher - teaching 9th graders (gifted ones at that) computer skills. Today I introduced them to Squeak ! It went really well. First I talked about smalltalk, had them type in the " Transcript show: 'Hello World'. " program in a workspace, and I'm sure that bored them plenty. But I did not miss a beat. I next introduced them to the morphs - the bouncing atoms and the blobs , etc.. and they were HOOKED ! 80 Kids now know about Squeak. Now what ? Changesets, Monticello and SqueakMap

Hi, at the moment I try to figure out how the three configuration management approaches fit together. After switching to Monticello I found my life a lot easier :) Monticello is of great help! Then I noticed that changesets are named after the Monticello package that was last imported. I'm not quite sure if changesets have any benefit if someone is using monticello. Then there is squeakmap. Squeakmap seems to be the official release server. Is squeakmap tied to a special format? Can squeakmap use monticello packages as well? I'm asking because I had problems to find any version information on squeakmap (beside the squeakmap version). While reading the squeak lists it appeared to me that a lot of you are developing with monticello and releasing on squeakmap. But I didn't find any information about the source (e.g. monticello version) version. I think it would be great to install a release from squeakmap and having the opportunity to open monticello and see which newer versions (and most important what changes) have been made. The squeakmap packages could also add their repository to monticello when they are installed. The only reason against it I can imagine is that this would introduce dependencies which aren't wanted. 3.9 reading 3.8 .pr

I have students and teachers that have developed projects in eToys with 3.8 and are experiencing errors on every .pr file when 3.9 attempts to load. We presumed upward migration and are unable, or unaware, of how to resolve. Steve Linduska

revolution vs. spueak

I just ran into Revolution http://www.runrev.com/. I was wondering how it compares to squeak? It seems a lot like squeak and easy for beginners. Can some one point out the differences for me? I know spueak is more powerful but for an absolute beginner would Revolution be better? And them room over to squeak after having success in building a few applications? Chuck
