interpreter (vers. 6502) cannot read image file ?

Hi I am running: squeak ./my-image and get: This interpreter (vers. 6502) cannot read image file (vers. 544830578). My image was likely opened on Windows , the above message is from Linux I think all my VMs are fairly recent , within about 2 years (I can provide them later, right now I do have access to the Windows VM that saved the image). Was there a recent (I mean perhaps last 2-3 years) VM change that would create incompatibility of images as to which VM versions can be used to open them? Or perhaps, can this be a siggn the image is corrupted? Thanks Milan

Unique class names?

Hi, so class names must be unique in the system? How do people organize things then? Do I just choose some funnky prefix and _hope_ that noone else chose the same one? Are there conventions? Is the Squeak community happy with this approach? Lots of small simple questions. Thanks for any answer. Felix

SUnit/TestRunner resumable:?

Hi, I can't get "assert:description:resumable:true" to work and I'm clueless as to why. That and if it is working, I can't tell the difference between it and "assert:description:resumable:false". My test is simple .. I have a class JunkTest which is a subclass of TestCase. JunkTest has the following methods ------------------------------------------- JunkTest>>testJunk | anArray | anArray := #(1 2 3 4 5 6). anArray do:[ :item | self assert:(item even) description:(item asString) resumable:true. ]. JunkTest>>isLogging ^true JunkTest>>failureLog ^Transcript ------------------------------------------- Now I bring up Transcript. (its empty) Now I bring up TestRunner. I select the package which contains JunkTest, highlight JunkTest and only JunkTest and click Run Selected. I get a result that I have 1 test that was run and 1 failure (its yellow). Below is the JunkTest>>testJunk method. In the Transcript, the only thing which was printed out was '1'. No more. So it only executed the first iteration and the stopped because it failed. If I try to run Selected again the same thing occurs. Now if I double-click the listed method, it will run bring up a window asking me to "Proceed" "Abandon" "Debug". It's titled "ResumableTestFailure:1". I click proceed and I get another window stating, "ResumableTestFailure:3". I click proceed and I get another window stating, "ResumableTestFailure:5". In the Transcript window I now have printed out"1<newline>3<newline>5<newline" Now if I change the resumable: argument to false, the only difference between the two, is that when the debugger window appears when I double click on the actual test method, instead of it being titled ResumableTestFailure, its titled TestFailure. As far as I can tell everything else is identical. I don't get it... what am I doing wrong? My understanding of resumable:true, is that when I select the JunkTest class and hit Run Selected, it should run through all iterations and spit out 1<newline>3<newline>5<newline> to the transcript and then pop the testJunk method in the area where failures are shown. But its always terminating after the first iteration no matter what. I'm using Squeak 3.10 on Windows.. but I tested it on Squeak 3.9 on Mac OS X and the behaviour is the same. Thanks, Eric

Tracing execution of seaside apps

Today I was trying to trace execution of my seaside app using the processbrowser/cpuwatcher, but I couldn't see any growth in the stack. Is there a good way to do this without instrumenting the code (which is what I resorted to)? Alternatively, is there a convenient way to remove instrumentation? Thanks all.

Primitives and array computation

Hi, I have to build a class which makes intensive mathematical computations (which I will connect to a Squeak GUI). For this purpose, I tried the mathematical functions on arrays, and evaluated the performances: Examples: Time millisecondsToRun: [ tab1:=(1 to: 1000000). tab1 collect: [:each | each cos]] 7716 Time millisecondsToRun: [ (1 to: 1000000) cos] 7780 Time millisecondsToRun: [ tab1:=(1 to: 1000000). tab1 do: [:each | each cos]] 1231 The best is about 1s for computing cos(x) 1000000 times. By reducing the the vector size, the three algorithms seem to be equivalent in time (I guess that there are additional time consumed for memory management). Now, in comparison, the same tests for a C implementation is about 0.002s, about 500x better. By browsing the classes, it did not saw primitives acting directly on arrays, and it seemed that the loops are done by Squeak... An explanation of this dramatical difference. So, my question is: does the VM implements primitives for computing mathematical functions on arrays? Best regards, FD

Application data management

Hi, I am thinking of how application data is best persisted in squeak apps. Probably I have problems in distinguishing the Squeak "platform" and my Application. If I see my application as a part of squeak, then I guess there's no need for custom resource management - as soon as a user does "save.." all is saved automatically, including my app data (here its just a list of filenames). Is that the intended way? Or is "Save..." intended for developing only? Gee squeak is really different. Otherwise, I could do it all manually, persist my data to somehomedir/.myappdata How can I get the current user home? Thanks for your comments. Felix

I proud announce the alpha version is ready at http://ftp.squeak.org/various_images/SqueakLight/SqueakLightII.7188.zip This comes with a Welcome and Extra Bonus windows and could load some useful stuff. Off course also fun stuff ! This image could be easily updated from previous. As still evaluating which Monticello version should be in, in this saved image I stick to old trusted Ralph version of 3.10. No 7182Monticello-edc.3.sqz into, but any could go to files and load for have Monticello 1.6 beta of Matthew. >From the image you could read any news I put in the swiki http://wiki.squeak.org/squeak/6056 Remember, run but is alpha. UTF support in Linux?

Hi all, In the Linux VM, when I try to input, via paste or the right alt combination, non-ascii characters, like 'ö' or 'é' for example, Squeak merely shows 'o?' or 'e?' I researched into this and accordingly chose a font that supports UTF-8 and set the locale and VM command line options appropriately: export LC_CTYPE="en_IE.UTF-8" locale-gen en_IE.UTF-8 (...which claims that locale is upto date...) sudo dpkg-reconfigure -plow locales (...which outputs en_IE.UTF-8... done among other things....) squeak -encoding UTF-8 -textenc UTF-8 -pathenc UTF-8 Squeak3.10.2-7179-basic.image Now when I try to input the aforementioned characters I encounter a debug message: "Error subscript is out of bound." However, I have set Squeak's language to Spanish and then German, and the characters display perfectly well in the menus. Although, the same cannot be said for the any files with non-ascii characters in the file dialogue. So, it seems it's an input problem. Anyone with any ideas?
