Double linked list

Hi, I can only find a "LinkedList" class. I'd like a double linked list. Where can I get one? Thanks, Felix

Suspected bug when setting preferences

The attached test case fails in a new sq3.10.1-7175dev08.06.1 image. (or sq3.9.1-7075dev08.07.1.image). testPreferenceSaving PreferenceBrowser new saveSelected. Smalltalk garbageCollect. self should: [SystemNavigation default obsoleteBehaviors size = 0] SystemNavigation default obsoleteBehaviors inspect actually has 400+ entries. Most of the entries are BooleanPreferenceView class or PBBooleanPreferenceView class, but also other classes such as Scrollbar, UIThemeStandardSqueak, ... Am I right in thinking this is incorrect behaviour? ...Stan

You have helped by finding an complaining about the problem. Ken Causey was the point man on the release. He deemed this not important enough to include. loading .morph files

This is a minor problem that I have been having with a bookMorph, as well as other morphs. I saved it as a .morph file, just to back it up, but when I loaded it to make sure that it worked the text size had been changed. I tried messing with preferences, and the Appearance... -> system fonts... menu, thinking that it was loading with the default font or something, but it did not change anything, then again I did not change the defaults. The really weird thing is that it doesn't change all of the text sizes. Accuny seems to be targeted and if it is set to size 10 it gets changed to 12 when I load it, (or save it?). It also seems to be bold. Any idea why the morphs behave this way? -- Freeman

anyone know of if there's a package kicking around that creates index/flash cards? I have some good old fashion rote memorization to tackle and would like to stay in Squeak? wfpi

"Smart Paper"?

I've been seeing some messages fly by about people using Squeak like "Smart Paper." What is meant by this? Using the various presentation morphs and just projects and workspaces for a more visual, dynamic, note taking system? Could anyone give examples of how they are using Squeak just as a general tool, not necessarily for programming per se, if this is the correct way to interpret this? Just looking for uses I am not recognizing... Rob

What is a "weak" reference

Can someone explain what a "weak" vs (I am guessing) "strong" reference is? I have been struggling with Garbage Collection for quite some time now and saw this on another list: "You'll need to add an instance variable to process and modify fork to record the origin. Currently processes don't remember their ancestor. I recommend you create a special fork that remembers ancestry, rather than modifying the default fork. You will potentially accumulate a lot of garbage otherwise. Also, you might consider making the reference from a process to its parent weak to allow the parent to be GC'ed when it terminates even if it has children." I, too, am maintaining parent/child relationships in my application and have just been doing something like: Parent>>createChild |child| child := Child new parent: self. ^child I am assuming, given my troubles, that this is NOT a weak reference?! I have Shout installed and I see, the := instead left arrow. I can see, on World > Preferences > Preference Browser, under 'browsing' category, an option called.. syntaxHighlightingAsYouTypeLeftArrowAssignment I don't know if this is the option, but If I enable it, My ':=' are changed to '_', not to left arrow. Left-arrow for assignment

Hello, I've experimented with Squeak a bit, and have also seen the debate on the assignment symbols and how to handle the left-arrow, ':=', and underscore at http://wiki.squeak.org/squeak/5751. However, I want to use the left-arrow in my code. Is this possible? It seems like translation from ':=' to left-arrow and vice-versa should be straightforward (indeed, a sed script could do it). This may be a FAQ, but I didn't see it on the FAQ list at the Squeak wiki. Thanks.

One of the uses of weak references in other languages is to keep a collection of all the instances of a class without preventing them being garbage collected. Obviously, this is not necessary in squeak.
