Can a block be a string?

I am playing around with Seaside 3 and noticed that, for example: html paragraph: 'text', and html paragraph: [html text: 'hello']. Are both valid. When I looked at the definition for paragraph: it says that takes a aBlock, but then doesn't seem to do a value: aBlock. So, what I am wondering is whether it is valid to give a string as a block, or whether this is just a slightly loose definition of block? Cheers Andy

Newbies of the World. Recently some ask about how a Morph do some at fixed repeating time. I answer use step (What you wish) and stepTime (time in milliseconds for repeat action) I attach BatMorph who was originated by some .gif send by Chris (I think was he) and convert in the pest present in all my images. Could you made elaborate flies ? Bat hide and show ? Bat changing color random or following some color schema ? Participate ! Ask if have troubles. Use whathever image you have as BatMorph lives in any image. For Pharopatas could have Fun , file in the attached .st first. Could be cool if you use Trunk and help to us to debug and polish. mucking around in .changes file on linux/ubuntu

Hi all, At some point in making and finding bugs, I am left with having to pick up pieces. On my mac I could always just read the whole changes file into a text editor and extract manually the tail bit. Having moved on to Ubuntu 8.04 my tools don't seem to match my needs. The Gedit editor refuses to read the text because it is in a format it can't decode. It tries Utf-8 and latin1. The Emacs editor will gladly read in the file but because the line endings are cr rather than crlf I get a file all on one line. My emacs skills are rusty so I've not figured out what to do next. Is there anyone out there who has deal with changes files and linux editors? What might work most elegantly or robustly? Yours in curiosity and service, --Jerome Peace

Hi all, Thanks for all your tips. Now I'm able to find classes and methods, and that really helps to understand how things work. I'm still wondering about a simple "search and replace" though. When I do a text search, the whole system freezes and I have to wait until it finishes searching. Why is that? I would like to go on rather than wait for the results. I've installed the SPDF package succesfully and am building a class to print a bill for the cart. I'll look into the money object later. Creating a PDF is creating enough headaches for now, because my knowledge of smalltalk is so limited. But I'm learning it step by step. I didn't get answers my question about squeak support for internationalization, is that because there is no built in support for that? Do the commercial smalltalk version support that aspect better? Van.

Hi all, I'm playing with the sushi cart of seaside. I'm trying to create a Dutch version of it. That's simply looking up text and replacing it. Hmm, at least that's what I thought. Because then I've come across the printStringAsCents method to show the price (for instance $ 1.50 ). As I live in Europe, I don't want to use $, but Euro's. Of course, if someone gives them to me, I won't say no to a few dollars ;-) It seems to be here: Kernel-Numbers / Integer printStringAsCents method, which is: ^ '$', (self // 100) displayString, '.', (self \\ 100) asTwoCharacterString 1a. Should I replace the $ sign here? Can I put the Euro sign here? But I don't like changing kernel methods: - it seems dangerous because I don't know what depends on it - hard to transfer to other installations - and it is very likely that I will forget that I changed it for the sushi cart because the code is 'hidden' somewhere else. Besides that, I would like to be able to set the kind of currency. 1b. Is there multilingual (regarding currencies / display of date and time / use of an external file with string messages that can be translated instead of hard coded text) library somewhere out there? 2. Because of all the help, I know how to find classes, which is great. But in my search for the printStringAsCents I was wondering how do I find messages when I know the message name, but not the class name? Or is it easy to determine the class name in some way? Any thoughts are appreciated.

1. I'll need to use DateAndTime, didn't know it existed ;-) 1/2. I was looking for the class, great to have several ways to look the internals up 3. the seaside list replied with the place to get the source of spdf, I'll try that out 4. For now, I'll just use the alias then. Thanks for the encouragement (i.e. answering the questions), it motivates me to keep learning.

Still pounding head against wall over glReadPixels => external buffer

Hey all... I'm still having problems with my external shared memory thingie. I can evoke the unix shm* calls and obtain a reference to a shared memory buffer and attach it to squeak's heap. I can write into it and read back. I can even attach the same shared memory to two different instances of squeak and write to the buffer in one and read it with the other. What I still cannot figure out is how to take that external buffer and direct the OpenGL>>glReadPixels call to it so that I can draw using squeak and have it become a bitmap for a different application. I've tried to figure out how forms and bitmaps work. I've looked over a reasonably large bit of source code and read various bits of the wiki and example code and what not. I still can't get glReadPixels to change the contents of my shared buffer, however. OTOH, I've become very good at getting Squeak to crash, sometimes silently and sometimes with the typical Mac OS X crash report dialog. Anyone know how to simply take an arbitrary raw pointer and successfully direct glReadPixels to it? I've looked at the source for the Tweak-OpenGL code, but can't wrap my brain around how it is [correctly] using a bitmap as the target buffer for glReadPixels... Or rather, how to properly create a bitmap from the raw pointer so that I can use the example code as a starting point. http://www.croquetconsortium.org/index.php/Procedural_Texturing thanks in advance. 24 hours expiration? PDF? Using Alias?

Hello all, 1. Some data 'expires' after 24 hours. So when the object is initialized, I do: creationDate: Date today. And there is a method to check if the data is expired, like this: ^self creationDate > (creationDate addDays: 1) But when thinking it over, I'm wonder what happens when the object is created at 23:59, and at 00:01 I check this property. Will it be 'expired'? Or should I use a Time object instead? The problem with that is that time only runs daily from 00:00 - 23:59, so using Time alone I also can't check the 24 hours, or can I? 2. When I was debugging this, I wanted to look up the Date object in de OB System Browser. But I can't find it the object. It is probably hidden somewhere in a package, but I don't know which one. What is the best way to search for an object? 3. I would like to create a pdf file. What is the best way to do it? I asked a question about where to find the SPDF library, but I didn't get an answer. Are there other options? 4. I'm using an alias (Van Upboy) to access this list. What is common practice? Do ppl use their real names? The problem I have with that is that I don't like the idea that all these mailings will end up on the Internet with my name, so I rather not use it. The problem with an alias is that would rather use my real name, it is more personal. Any help is appreciated, thanks!

where is the spdf framework

Hello Van. Did you findt the page on creating pdfs from seaside? http://www.seaside.st/documentation/pdfs I've checked the link there. The download link doesn't work anymore (the server is claimed to be down). There is a version of SPDF in http://www.squeaksource.com/Officious The SPDF license is not MIT. Stephan Eggermont
