Hmm... I don't think so.
Looking and some *ReadWriter classes in Squeak, this might work if those provide a stream protocol. #nextPut: etc. If so, you could put a *ReadWriter where a stream is expected. Not sure. :-)

In Java land, they can wrap readers ...roughly speaking an XMLReaderWriter wraps a BZ2ReaderWriter and the XML tools can read/write to the .bz2 file just like a regular file.
