Saving a number of classes' categories

Hello, I've started to take a look at Squeak and now that I'm trying an AbstractFactory, I've made a series of classes categories, mushc like so: Car CarParts CarAssembler CarPartFactory Each of these categories contains one or more classes. Now, I would like to save all these related categories in one file/package so that I know I can retrieve easily the whole kit later without having to make 4 fileIns (or more if more categories are added). Is there a way to do this ? Cheers, Al

Thanks to everyone who contributed a reply to my question regarding the use of super and inheritance. This community is a wonderful resource for people like me who are trying to a learn a new programming system on their own. Sorry if I created the impression that I was trying to get an answer for homework off the 'net. I'm many years out from school and largely self-taught: I write code to help me manage data for my day job (psychiatry). Previously I used emacs lisp, but found it difficult to organize and manage programs of any real size and thought smalltalk might offer some advantages in this regard. Dear Squeakers, welcome to the The Weekly Squeak Summary, a weekly report on what's going on in the world of Squeak based on the Weekly Squeak blog. Highlights of the week: For their bi-weekly meetings, the Squeak Foundation board are calling for agenda item suggestions [3]. Suggestions can be made on a dedicated web page. David Griswold has called for a common Smalltalk VM summit [4]. Will this be successful? In any case, it is a cause of lively discussions on Squeak and Strongtalk mailing lists. Apparently, what is needed most now is that experienced C++ hackers with some VM background invest some effort. Aside from VM hacking (but nevertheless causally connected), Exupery is an important point of interest. Based on an interview with its creator Bryce Kampjes, the 1.0 version of an Exupery FAQ has been published as a news item, and some detailed information on Exupery has been given on Squeak-dev [5,7]. Squeak is going portable! It runs on the Nokia 770, and Aaron Reichow has posted some experience reports [13]. The crypto code in Squeak is heading for certification. The Squeak Cryptography Team now has a Certification Validation Officer, Krishna Sankar, who is taking care of this [15]. CONGRATULATIONS to Seaside and its creators for 200,000 downloads [18]! This does not include VisualWorks-related downloads, mark you. ;-) Finally, the second release candidate for the 3.9 image is out and available for testing [19]. serial port access

I'm a newbie in Squeak, and i'm in a desperate need to use a serial port to comunicate with an external device. I've found the System-Serial Port, but i really need to see a working code example. Can anyone help? I just need to send some bytes and read the answer. Thanks in advance, Juliano

Tutorial, examples about bookmorph

Hello, since a couple of week I try I am working with Squeak. I would like to use the presentation and multimedia skills , but I don't find examples or tutorials, especially about the use of bookmorph. I found information about a project "Sophie" , but not many information about it. I would really appreciate, if someone could give some links to tutorials/examples. Regards Ulli

Question about inheritance

Greetings smalltalkers, I'm a newbie trying to get my head around inheritance. I'm puzzled by the following example. It seems to do what I mean, but not what I type ;) This is a good thing, but I'd get further if I understood the semantics a bit better. from http://www.cosc.canterbury.ac.nz/wolfgang.kreutzer/cosc205/smalltalk1.html Class: Monster Superclass: Object Category: Sesame Street Instance variables: colour tummy initialization initialize self colour: #green. self tummy: Bag new "There is only a single class method and no class variables." creation new ^ super new initialize What I don't understand is this: Monster new returns an instance of Monster, what you'd want it to. But Monster new executes "^ super new" which to my mind should return an instance of Object, not Monster. Just to confuse myself further, I typed: Monster superclass new and got an Object. It seems to me that "super new" and "superclass new" should do the same thing. Any points to clarify my confusion would be greatly appreciated. Where to ask the questions,

Hi all, I'm wondering where to ask the questions about Squeak. Long time ago, I was asking on squeakland, but after a time asking about Kedama I found that, some questions get more attention on Squeak Beginners. Recently I have being asking about accented characters and "hipertext" in Bookmorph but I get not pointer to an aswer. ¿it is better to ask in another list? or I'm making the questions in a wrong way? Hola, necesito ayuda con respecto a la instalacion de Squeak, por favor alguien me podria dar una forma facil y sencilla de como instlar squeak en mi maquina AMD 64. Ya que trate de hacerlo de una forma forzada y me salieron errores. Gracias

Can I get a notification before fullGC?

Hello, Is there any way to get some sort of notification right *before* a fullGC happens so that some guys release their cache? Is there something I can do for this? Thank you so much! Below is a little background... I noticed that the caching behavior of TTCFont is *still* relying on the old (and broken) behavior of weak references. Back then, when a WeakArray is in the old space and the referent is in the young space, the referent didn't get reclaimed until a fullGC. This behavior was quite nice; it releases the cache only when a big memory clean up is required. However, on recent VMs, the cache is released always go away because the reference from the weak array is the only reference to it. Andreas already had a fix for it: http://impara.de/pipermail/tweak/2005-August/000881.html and I folded it to the eToys image (which should go into other images), and it seems to be working as expected. However, a little thing (which is not critical as his patch limits the upper limit of cache entries) is that the cache is kept even when a fullGC happens. -- Yoshiki
