Oponing a file twice

Just as I was thinking I was getting a handle on this I'm terribly confused... a _ FileStream fileNamed: 'readme.txt'. gives me a stream an the file. b _ FileStream fileNamed: 'readme.txt'. gives me nil a _ nil. a _ FileStream fileNamed: 'readme.txt'. a is still nil It seems that the only way I can reopen this file is to Smalltalk garbageCollect. Now if I simply wanted to have two references to the file I could just b _ a copy. But what if I open a stream on a file, then reuse my variable, then sometime later want to use that file again? Do I have to explicitly perform garbage collection? That seems very wrong. Do I have to keep a hold of all references to files and their filenames if I think I _might_ need that file again? That also seems very wrong. Scenario: ... some code a _ FileStream fileNamed: 'readme.txt'. some more code ... a _ result of something ... even more code b _ FileStream fileNamed: 'readme.txt'. I've looked at FileStream, StandardFileStream and MultiByteFileStream for 2 days now and am none the wiser (not quite true, I've learned you can send Squeak into lala land by putting 'self halt' inside FileStream>>fileNamed: and then getting any error at all... the debugger seems to open a stream that opens a debugger that opens a stream that opens a debugger etc etc) What am I missing (I assume I'm overlooking something really simple)? I was reading Stephen Wessals morphic tutorial and came across this: self activeSegments values anySatisfy: [:each | each = true] which I thought was odd, and so I first replaced it with: self activeSegments values anySatisfy: [:each | each = true] and then just: self activeSegments includes: true I think this should be fine since Dictionary's "do" operates on values anyway, right? Or am I missing something?

Hello, I think I've mentioned this before but Array2D is deprecated. Is there a two-dimentsional array structure that's NOT deprecated? (Array2D just says scary stuff without suggesting what one SHOULD use.) ===Blake===

Squeak Mouse Bindings?

Hi, could someone tell me where I can find Squeak documentation on how to properly setup 3-button mouse on Mac OS X? At this, I'm getting the following: Left: Brings up the World Menu Middle: Halo Menu Right: Malo Menu In short, I would like to change the mapping within Squeak. Thanks in advance, -Conrad

Thanks for checking the XML example on your machine. I tried it with a fresh image and it worked for me as well. 1000 apologies for wasting your time. It turns out that I commented out some code before I found the example and I was trying to make sense of the API cold. Thanks again for the response. XML parsing

Hi, I'm struggling to parse an XML document. I found an example in: XMLDOMParser addressBookXMLWithDTD ... however testing this example results in: XMLDocument doesNotUnderstand: #localName a search revealed there is a bug logged against this: http://bugs.squeak.org/view.php?id=32 I'm more inclined to believe that I'm using the wrong code or example than that XML parsing is broken in Squeak. Is there a better example to base my parsing code on? I'm using Squeak 3.9 with an image from: http://damien.cassou.free.fr/squeak-web/squeak-web-118.zip Thanks Nick

Capture keyboard focus for real and true.

Hey, gang: So, I've made a morph that responds to keypresses and I've caused it to grab the keyboard focus. But if I move the mouse of a workspace, the workspace captures the keyboard focus, and from that point forward, my morph is back to only responding to keypresses when the mouse is over it. My basic question is how to change this. (As long as this morph exists, I want it to respond to all keypresses, let's say.) It seems like I should be able to hook into the world or into a playfield, but I've never been able to figure out how to address an object pulled from the catalog. These objects all have names but they only work with eToys. Then there's the mysterious number that appears.... So, I give: If things are supposed to be done in worlds and playfields, how do alter the behavior of those worlds and playfields to meet my needs? ===Blake===

As you worked out, it's fussy about the (number, and case of) file extensions it recognises. I've fixed those issues and uploaded a new version, as I'm sure that this will have caused other people problems too. Edgar - you mentioned that you'd have done things differently. I started writing a more complex application, but realised that image handling on my Mac wasn't very fast, so I stripped the application back down, but thought it was useful to document what I'd produced as I had a lot of trouble getting to a core SystemWindow-based application. Are you saying that (i) using SystemWindow is not the approach you'd have taken, or (ii) that's not how you'd have implemented a SystemWindow-based application? (or both!). I'd appreciate any comments you have, and may add them to the application as warnings to anyone who picks it up in future. I found that it worked OK after I arranged for the file extension check to look of #JPG and #JPEG. The other problems I was having with it were because I was not hitting enter on the PluggableTextMorph before clicking on the goBack and goNext buttons. I'm not sure why I didn't notice the comments and balloon help about pressing enter in the PluggableTextMorph. I haven't had time to look at it more deeply since. I would have thought it would be nice if the goNext/Back buttons cause the directory field to accept if it hadn't already, I think this would be more in keeping with the behavior of modern GUIs. I didn't see an obvious way to make that happen.

SampleCode-ImageViewer

This is a question about the sample that was posted here last October, at http://lists.squeakfoundation.org/pipermail/beginners/2006-October/001238.h… I am not able to make it work. I was able to file in the code and start an instance from a workspace with 'SampleImageViewerMorph new.' I click on the 'dir' button in the upper left hand corner of the resulting Image Viewer Morph window, and that summons a directory browser UI that I can navigate to a directory that has jpgs in it. (e.g., "C:\Documents and Settings\wades\My Documents\My Pictures\rocks5"). When I hit the 'accept' button in the directory browser, it goes away and the path to the directory I picked goes into the location bar or whatever you'd call it in the Image Viewer Morph window. A balloon comes up, saying 'When I'm populated, you can click on a file to load it.' Nothing happens. If I try hitting the little '>' button by the location bar on the Image View Morph window, I get an "error out of bounds." If I debug that, I see that the error happens in SampleImageLoader>>loadImage: it appears that the SampleImageLoader's collection members are empty. I tried making an instance of SampleImageLoader from the workspace, thinking I could manually initialize it and load the image list. a _ SampleImageLoader new. a inspect. (open a transcript) a loadImagesBelow: 'c:\stuff\rpics' The transcript shows "Entering DosFileDirectory on 'c:\stuff\rpics'" and then nothing else happens. Should any of this work? I am using: Squeak3.9 latest update: #7067 Current Change Set: Unnamed1 OK On WinXP SP2.
