Dear Squeakers, welcome to the The Weekly Squeak Summary, an irregular traffic-dependent report on what's going on in the world of Squeak based on the Weekly Squeak blog. Highlights of the past weeks: Squeak's documentation base has seen two significant improvements. There now is a detailed tutorial [1] focused on the development of a little game. The tutorial covers many aspects from Squeak installation over unit testing to version management with Monticello. The second important improvement is the book "Squeak by Example" [15] that covers the entire Squeak system. The book is available for free as a PDF download, but can also be purchased in print for very little money. Who says Squeak isn't usable in production? Qwaq and Intel are collaborating [18]! The OLPC initiative's XO laptops are going into production [4], and there finally was some credible and balanced coverage of the project in German television [9]. reimplementing #= and #hash

Hi List, I have a Class PoolQueue which has instvars 'member' and 'processor'. I find that an instance of PoolQueue when placed in an OrderedCollection can no longer be considered equal. I suppose I have to reimplement #= and #hash to allow PoolQueue instances to be compared. My problem: how do I implement #hash? Or stated another way, what does #hash accomplish? Thanks in advance. Chaining versus cascading

Hi, I have a question about the difference between chaining and cascading. What would happen if you wrote this: Html table id: 'label' with: [foo foo foo] You see, I've left out the semicolon that the sushi store demo puts between 'label' and with. It usually looks like this: Html table id: 'label'; with: [foo foo foo] It seems odd to throw in a cascading semicolon just in there and then move on. I understand if you have: DiskController reset initialize startRunning. DiscController reset; intitialize; startRunning. The difference is that initialize will act on the result of DiskController reset. The second line, the cascaded line, is just giving DiskController three orders one after the other. The returned object from html table would get passed the selector id:'label' and the returned object from that would get passed with: [foo foo foo]. Oh, wait a minute. I guess we want to pass two separate messages to the object table, one after another. Does that mean we could break the line into two statements: Html table id:'label'. Html table with: [foo foo foo]. Yes? No? Chris Cunnington

Problem with Browser

I think this is an old problem I remember seeing but I don't remember where. In 3.10dev7.09.1 image I am having my method pane in any browser ( OB or refactoring ) with a big red square with a yellow X and a walkback from the method TextMorphForShout>>drawOn: when I am entering a method. Thanks in advance for help. Steve

I just noticed that the example code extraction was buggy. It is fixed now, and all the code from the Quinto chapter is now in the ascii example file. how to configure web server

Hi! It's my first post here - started to search the archives, but... oh, well, got tired. The people who take care of our servers and developed our educational platform said that we need a special player in the server, in order to use Squeak projects (instead of Flash, for instance). Or they said something and I understood that... So, how do I upload .pr files to the server and platform in order to have them appear and run justa as a .swf file would in the web browser? Today, I have to choose the file type when uploading multimedia files (flash, shockwave, quicktime, etc.), but there is no squeak option yet. I know that users should install the Squeak plugin - no problem with that. Quinto game in SBE

It's a great book, many thanks to the authors Quinto game is a nice first app, I've learnt a lot from it but can't get it working fully. Have others here succeeded? Problems: 1) the final line of the SBECell initialize method: self turnOff triggers a MessageNotUnderstood error doesNotUnderstand: #turnOff My interpretation is that the turnOff method is not part of the SimpleSwitchMorph super class I wasn't sure how to solve this problem so I just commented out that line "self turnOff" and continued with the rest of the game With SBECell new openInWorld a single cell appears and toggles a colour change with mouse clicks so it still seems to work at that level 2) pp. 43-5 of the book shows you how to use the debugger to fix the newCellAt:at: method by adding ^c to the final line My problem is that even after I do this correction I still get the same doesNotUnderstand: #toggleState error When I run the game SBEGame new openInWorld the grid appears ok But when I click on a cell the MessageNotUnderstood box pops up with doesNotUnderstand: #toggleState at the top of the stack I was wondering if others have had these problems and if anyone had ideas about what I could do to get the game working fully? -- Bill Kerr http://billkerr2.blogspot.com/

FreeType installation

Hi, I'm using the image from http://damien.cassou.free.fr/squeak-web/sq3.9- 7067web07.08.1.zip and struggling to install the FreeType Plus package using the "Package Universe Browser". The installation freezes with the popup message "installing FreeType Plus- plugins version 0.13" and a progress bar "Preamble" that fails to make any progress! Attempting to debug the problem, I started with a fresh image and installed FFI. The FFI tests pass. Then FreeType successfully installs four dlls: freetype6.dll, ft2plugin.dll, BitBltPlugin.dll and msvsr71.dll, at which stage the installation freezes. I failed to interrupt the running process and found the only way to stop it was to kill squeak. It seems to be that Squeak is caught in some endless loop, which is gradually using more memory - Windows starts giving me low virtual memory warnings after sometime. When I restart squeak, the same thing happens - the system appears to hang, no screen redraws, but consuming more and more RAM as time passes. Removing the FreeType DLLs from my squeak directory allows me to restart squeak and run as normal. Any ideas? Thanks in advance, Nick
