Sorry for the that, I mean my problem is I put the exception in the wrong part of my program, so everytime I try to call it in the method it does not return the exception, so what i did was: 1. Create an new exception class, which is: FileNotFoundError Smalltalk.Core defineClass: #FileNotFound superclass: #{Core.Error} indexedType: #none private: false instanceVariableNames: '' classInstanceVariableNames: '' imports: '' category: '' 2. I use that new exception to raise signal on a FileNotFoundError. fileNotFound ^FileNotFound raiseSignal: 'The file is not exist' At first I'm using handler on:[...] do: [..] but I only need to define my own description of FileNotFoundError so that's all I need to do. I'm still a beginner so sometimes I misunderstood and get confused. Porting an old app to a recent image

Hi all, is there some documentation, help, tools, etc. to port a Squeak app written in SqueakV2.sources to a recent image? fileOut -> fileIn gives me all sorts of error messages I cannot understand/debug. I actually just want to port parts of the app to re-use the code. But it proofs really difficult for me Thanks, Matthias

Ok, so I'm really new to smalltalk. I've done a few basic tutorials and have a simple understanding of the syntax. My pervious programing experience is mostly java/C with a bit of Objective C in the mix. I'm trying to figure out how to do what seems like a simple thing. I have a set, I'd like to find out if an object exists in the set. In a general form. Let's use the a relatively simple case. Assume I have classes Rock Paper and Scissors. validHands := Set new. validHands add: Rock new; add Paper new; add Scissors new. Assume I have a player object which responds to the method throwsAHand with an instance of Rock Paper or Scissors. how do I craft validHands contains: aPlayer throwsAHand I know that contains: takes a block, and that this isn't correctly done.. but I'm trying to get the a handle on how to do this. The intent is to return a boolean, that indicates if the object the player threw is in the Set of valid objects that can be thrown. Tony

Launch a service to start the image

Hi, I want to launch at startup of the image this: ma := ModuleAssembly core. ma serverRoot: FileDirectory default fullName. ma alias: '/seaside' to: [ma addPlug: [:request | (WAKom default) process: request]]. ma documentRoot: FileDirectory default fullName. ma directoryIndex: 'index.html index.htm'. ma serveFiles. (HttpService startOn: 9094 named: 'myhttpd') plug: ma rootModule. I put this in a workspace and I do a "do it". So I can open http://localhost/seaside in my my webbrowser. I save and I quit. I reopens the image, but I can not open http://localhost/seaside. The last command does not seem to work at startup. Why? However, this method works with this command: WAKom startOn: 9094 How to launch a service to start the image? Thanks Herve Darce

What is the best way to generate HTML from an array of arrays

I want to display a threaded discussion. The threads will probably be stored in an array, and n levels of comments would be in nested arrays, e.g.: model := #('one' 'two' ('two a' 'two b') 'three'). I want to generated OL LI one /LI LI two /LI OL LI two a /LI ... /OL If there were no embedded arrays I would just do something like: model do: [:each| html listItem: (each asString)] But as soon as I have embedded arrays, my mind goes a bit blank and I start thinking about recursive routines, and that doesn't seem very Smalltalk at all! So, what is the OO way to do this? Thanks Andy

before methods

I've been working on some code using Proxies to step in front of method calls and now have an explosion of Proxy objects that aren't doing anything to make the design clearer. Far from it ( see previous thread 'locking' an object ). I've come back around to my initial inspiration for the design... CLOS's before, after and around methods. Is there are a way to get the same functionality in Smalltalk without using a Proxy class? In order to make it work, I'd have to be able to hook in to the standard vm message passing which all seems to be implemented in primitives which doesn't leave me very hopeful that it can be done, however, the rewards in my case would be great, so I'm here asking... Is it possible to implement before, after etc methods in Smalltalk?

adding protogrowl to a submit button and anchor

Below is my code. On the button submit and the cancel anchor I want to add a protoGrowl for eg. "Any changes to this form will be submitted" or on the cancel anchor "Changes will be cancelled".
