Can I use Squeak3.10.2-7179-basic with Squeak-3.8-9 binary?

3.8-9 is the only binary available for FreeBSD, and I could find no sources from which to build a new binary, nor for an AMD64 FreeBSD. Any hope? I find no non-binary files for 3.8-9. Chuck Bacon -- crtb%cape.com ABHOR SECRECY -- DEFEND PRIVACY

code formatter

Can the code formatter be easily customized? I really don't like what it does to cascaded and keyword messages. It takes this: wax start: 'root'; attr: 'a1' value: 'v1'; close. and turns it into this: wax start: 'root'; attr: 'a1 value: 'v1'; close. If it can't leave the code the way I had it, I wish it would at least only do this: wax start: 'root'; attr: 'a1 value: 'v1'; close. BTW, I didn't ask it to run. It ran automatically when I did an instance variable rename refactoring. --- Mark Volkmann

appending Strings

Is there a reason to prefer one of these approaches over the other? Maybe one is more efficient and should be preferred if doing a large number of appends. Approach #1 s := ''. s := s, 'foo'. s := s, 'bar' Approach #2 stream := WriteStream on: ''. stream nextPutAll: 'foo'. stream nextPutAll: 'bar'. s := stream contents Are there other approaches I should consider? --- Mark Volkmann

break out of do

Is there a way to break out of a do:? For example, if I use do: to iterate through the characters in a string and I find a character I don't want to allow, can I break out and avoid examining the remaining characters? --- Mark Volkmann

writing to a stream after close

Why is it that when I do a "print it" on all the code below, it outputs 'foobar'? Shouldn't the writing of 'bar' fail because I've closed the stream? ws := WriteStream on: ''. ws nextPutAll: 'foo'. ws close. ws nextPutAll: 'bar'. ws contents --- Mark Volkmann

I was able to get onto the IRC channel with no problem. What is the 'package browser' you used to try and load IRCe? When do you get the walkback, during loading or when u go to use it? IRCe should run fine without the FFI package it only needs that for live links. >> Thanks Frank, I tried loading the Network-IRC - as you suggested - but, unfortunately, I received exactly the same error message. Morphic "Tabs"

How hard would it be to add "tabs" to a Workspace, Browser, etc...? I know NOTHING about Morphic...I have been doing data processing with "just numbers," and any user interfaces I have written have been with Aida. However...sometimes it would just be nice to open another tab instead of another browser! Just wondering what would be involved and if I'd be up to it... Take care, Rob

Does one have to 'reboot' the squeak image after installing the FFI-Kernel? Also, out of curiosity, why isn't this FFI package included in the standard image? 'locking' an object

If you wanted to take a mutable object and make it immutable and be able to go back again to mutable, how could you do that? In particular the part that has me as a smalltalk beginner stumped is how to disallow any messages that would result in a state change while still allowing messages that only read state. Do you have to handle on a message by message basis? ( Eeek lots and lots of work ) Or is there something you could work into a superclass and use in its descendents? ( ideal for what I need. )
