How does one decide which Class to use as a model?

The HPI Seaside tutorial shows the data models as subclasses of Object, and I have seen that elsewhere. However, some examples talk about finding the closest class to use as your starting point. I am curious what experienced Squeakers do. Subclassing Object presumably gives maximum flexibility, but perhaps means that one ends up building in functionality that already exists further down the tree. On the other hand, taking a more specific class, might be a bit like premature optimisation? Cheers AB

<<David Mitchell-10 Start with Object. I usually create my own "Model" base class for my application (subclass of Object). I have an application right now called Epic, so I have an EpicModel. It makes a convenient home for shared functionality. Don't fall into the trap of subclassing collections. You almost always want your domain object to have a collection, not be a collection. It has been rare in my applications to have domain models that are subclasses of something already in the image. Honestly can't think of it happening once (though I'm sure that it has). The domain is one place where you can be really clean. You usually don't have that luxury in the presentation, controller, persistence, etc. >> <FX: sound of new subclassed collection being quietly deleted! > ;-) Thanks guys, that's very helpful. Dear Squeakers, welcome to this edition of The WeeklySqueakSummary, an irregular traffic-dependent report on what's going on in the world of Squeak based on the WeeklySqueak blog. It's been a rather long time since the last issue because I've been on parental leave for two months... anyway, here we go again with a slightly longer e-mail than usual. Highlights of the past weeks: First, some updates. Monticello 2 is out [36], and so is Swazoo 2.2 [32]. The former is essentially a complete re-write with an all-new core versioning mechanism. The latter especially features faster uploads. The popular "Squeak by Example" book has also been updated - updated to be available in another language: French [4]! Some interesting new projects have emerged: at Qwaq, Eliot Miranda is building an improved Squeak VM called Cog [14]; and what started as a coursework assignment at HPI to improve some of the functionality of JSqueak [20] has been turned into a SourceForge-hosted project called Potato [25]: a Squeak VM implemented in Java. Also an, albeit different, VM, MagLev supports Ruby on top of GemStone/S [12]. SandstoneDB [28] is a simple OODBMS based on ideas from ActiveRecord and Prevayler. Algernon [2] helps navigating the Squeak image. The native widgets side of the universe has interesting news. After a long time, wxSqueak has been updated [27] - let's hope it's come fully back to life! SeasideXUL [5] uses the Firefox XULRunner to support building GUIs, and one of this year's Squeak-related GSoC projects [26] is SqueakGTK. Squeak has been ported to two more platforms: the iPhone [16], and WiFiBots [7]. Last but certainly not least, congratulations to the CMSBox team for winning an UI usability award [35]! accented characters + squeak

Hi, I use squeak 3.10 + seaside + pier and use Linux utf8. I am french. So I use accented characters. On the side of pier, accented characters spend. By against the same asString text under squeak includes characters incomprehensible. Moreover, I can not write with the keyboard one character accentuated in squeak, it displays a debugger. In the workspace "print it" "234 asCharacter asString." I see correctly the string with the "e" with its emphasis circumflexe. How to use accented characters in asString minimum? Howto find all subclass responsibilities for a given Class

Hi, I am playing around with Morphs to create a Board for the ancient Go game. Given that I'd like to create a completely new kind of Morph (i.e. a Class that extends Morph), I'd like to find out which methods in the Morph class are defined as subclass responsibilities. Is there any fast way to do such a kind of search? Thanks, Felix

Downloading the Squeak By Example Sources from the SVN reposotory

Hi all, I'm interested in downloading the sources of Squeak By Example Sources from the SVN reposotory. I see that there is a web place to browse the sources, but there is a way to download all them (and the changelog files) to my hard disk? Cheers, Offray

Is there anything within Seaside that helps to POST data to another website?

I want to build a very simple site (as a learning exercise), that displays a form, captures that data, modifies it slightly (on the Squeak server) and then saves it to a totally different web server - just by using a REST call. On the face of it, it seems as though I need to use HttpSocket to do the data saving, but before I start digging into that, I wanted to check whether there was anything within the Seaside framework that would help me. Why is the UI so blurry on Linux?

Hi, I have installed squeak under several distros, at least Gentoo and Ubuntu. I have noticed that the Icons stored in the Flaps appear blurry/noisy - this is not the case on M$. Maybe someone knows why? Maybe there's a trick to get clean a clean look? I'll wait for response until I merge Squeak into my fresh system. Thanks, Felix

Why do Seaside's table tags e.g. td etc., live 'outside' of table?

I was looking at some Seaside code today and noticed that it said html tableCaption: 'blah'. Rather than html table tableCaption: 'blah' In other words, as far as Seaside was concerned the tableCaption tag was nothing to do with the table tag. This struck me as slightly odd. Somehow I would have expected the 'child' tags of table to be created through messages to the parent table. However, that clearly isn't the case, and now that I have looked more closely at the Seaside tag structure, that seems to be the case for most of the tags. I am keen to understand what makes good Smalltalk design, so could someone explain why making the tags independent is a better way of doing it? Thanks Andy

Fighting again with MC

Hi all, Is the second time I'm having troubles with simple changes to my package :S, and I can't figure out what I'm doing bad. I'm working in a little app. I did it 2 minor changes writing some comments on Doc side of a class, one line on a method commented and so on.
