[Etoys] Another experimental version of OLPC image for non-XO environments

Hello, We've been doing this on and off, but we put together another set of files that could be an Etoys system downloaded from squeakland.org as the official new version. This time, it is closer. Please download: http://tinlizzie.org/olpc/Squeakland-OLPC-080512.zip and unpack it. And, on Windows XP or Vista, nagivate to "etoys.app" folder and double click etoys.exe to launch it. On Macintosh, double click "etoys.app". On Linux, execute etoys.sh. Thank you! -- Yoshiki

[Etoys] quitting from etoys

Quitting Etoys on an XO takes 1min30 sec with our old Epaati setup, because etoys does some saving on shutdown. To me this is not a feature, but actually diminishes functionality, because there's no way to quit without saving. I know there's a magic incantation involving holding shift or something, but I'm talking from a user/kid perspective. The attached patch changes this behaviour to just quitting the image using the squeak quit primitive. Is there something to say for this approach? /Ties

[Etoys] Literate Etoys

I've started a attempt to make Literate Etoys inspired by Literate Programming and Active Essays. This to make it easier to clarify the intent of the different scripts, document the project and hopefully help users or students get a overview. It will have made a automated way of inserting ScriptEditors and text fields into a ScrollPane or a BookMorph. The first script attempt adds a ScriptEditor for each script to a Playfield. Then I realized that the ScriptEditor got pulled of the Playfield and into the world if I opened the script from the Viewer. Now I wonder if there is a way to keep two version of a ScriptEditor in sync, one in the Playfield or documentation and one in the world ? Ideas and suggestions are welcomed Karl

Unfortunately Etoys basically don't support downward compatibility like 3.9/3.10 to 3.8/olpc. so I think it might not be easy for such problem to get serious investigation by developers. It would be very nice if you can reproduce it within OLPC image. /Korakurider For this thread, maybe etoys list would be better fit that devel.

[Etoys] Sound tool refactoring and enhancement

I've been slowly working my way through the code of WaveEditor and added a few enhancements to GraphMorph and PianoKeyboardMorph as well. Now I'm wondering if there is interest to include such work in the Etoy image? The tools kind of work the way they are were but are arcane eg. WaveEditor is really a sound/instrument loop editor not a tool for editing general sound clips. I have started to make it into a general editor to edit sound clips and have made good progress in that regard. What are your thoughts on where these tools should move or not move ? Karl

Hi folks as I pointed out earlier I've registered Squeak on http://www.hackontest.ch "Can you code 24 hours non-stop? Hackontest is a new Google-sponsored 24-hour programming competition between different open source projects. Its goals are to enhance Free Software projects according to user needs and to make visible how enthusiastically open source software is being developed. During the current online selection process users and developers of open source software may submit feature requests and rate and comment them. On August 1st, 2008 the Hackontest jury will pick the three most promising teams. Each team will receive a free trip to Switzerland on September 24/25, 2008 to participate in the competition located in Zurich. Hacking 24 hours inside an etoy.CONTAINER, the teams and their virtually present communities will implement certain features based on the online ratings and jury selection. In the end, the Hackontest jury evaluates the code and awards the winners with a total of USD 8500. The jury is made up of 10 renowned open source contributors: Jeremy Alison (Samba), Jono Bacon (Ubuntu), Brian W. Fitzpatrick (Subversion), Martin F. [Etoys] Packaging Etoys for other platforms

Hello, We've been delaying the action a bit, but we have been making the Etoys distribution for non-XO Linux, Mac, and Windows. Now our team got some traction and trying to package it up sometime soon. The package will be based on the latest OLPC Etoys image, but with some different settings and preferences, basically. (We'll soon make an early access versions.) The version that will be distributed from the Squeakland web site will be this version; so that the Etoys users on XO and Etoys users on other platforms can send compatible projects. We would like to include good translations in the package that makes sense to do so. Some languages require additional fonts, or different settings. For these languages, the community should consider to make a re-packaged version with some modifications. (The Japanese community, for example, has been doing this successfuly for several years.) At the same time, for languages like German, the community has been doing great to keep up with the translation effort. (Even with unfortunate glitches!) And it doesn't need too different settings from English one, it is a good candidate to include. For the non-XO environments, these are typically at schools and they often cannot easily update files once installed. So, we decided to make a package that is intended not to be updated often. ... So, if you like to get your language translations included in the package for non-XO environments, please try to update the translations in "a few weeks". (This is what VPRI does so may not be able to deliver on time as promised, but we are trying.) Thank you! -- Yoshiki (Later on, we might work on some incremental updater but not this time.) For the OLPC XO, we are planning to revise the image and translations and release new versions relatively frequently. There will be deadlines like Update.2, so we try to provide better versions for them. That includes new translations.
