Hi,
I made new versions of po/mo files. These ones have all the english files 100% filled (in almost all the cases the msgstr is the same as the msgid, though). This fixes the problem of sending #translatedInAllDomains for the english locale.

Not a good idea, IMHO. We have many more incomplete translations than just English. We need to optimize that case, not avoid it.

Yes, but the English translations are almost empty. So all strings will fall into that. Not matter how much we optimize it, it doesn't make sense. I think we should avoid this case as much as we can because ideally #translatedInAllDomains shouldn't even exist. IMHO we need to guess the text domain correctly (which doesn't happen in a lot of cases) and try to complete all the translations.

So it would help with debugging the translations, because even the developers using English locale would be running the translation code ... okay, you convinced me ;)
We should also add a "test" translation that replaces every letter with, e.g., "@" - that helps in spotting untranslated phrases.
Yes, let's get this in and re-enable the Transcript warning for translatedInAllDomains.

Has anybody tried how well #translatedInAllDomains performs on a XO? I want to know if we should optimize it or not. There seems to be a lot of incorrect sends of #translatedInAllDomains and it could take a while before we fix them all. I'll see if I can borrow a XO from work tomorrow and test it there...

I tested on a XO from work and I haven't noticed a big delay by using #translatedInAllDomains. It's all painfully slow :) The only big difference I noticed was the first time I opened an "Object catalog".

Hi Ricardo,
I looked at the translation files you generated today. Not every existing translation was exported to the new per-package files. For example:
In old de/etoys.po:
#: Tools-FileList,FileList>>serviceCompressFile,GZipWriteStream_class>>serviceCompressFile msgid "compress file" msgstr "Datei komprimieren"
In new de/Compression.po:
#: Compression-Streams,GZipWriteStream_class>>serviceCompressFile msgid "compress file" msgstr ""
Do you have an idea what might have gone wrong?

Hi,
I made new po files. I don't know what happened with the last ones, though. You can download them from here: http://tecnodacta.com.ar/gira/gsoc/po.rar. I checked almost half of the po files and it seems to be ok. There are some missing translations, mostly from: * LanguageEditor and SUnit not being in the image. * Some records we don't use anymore like "Font-Scale", "Suppress-Bold", etc.
* Things that we no longer translate (I don't know why). * Translations changed. But I think these are all okay. In fact, they're good because we're cleaning the translations :)
I found one bug I didn't know how to deal with: all po files have this translation
#: Morphic-Basic,SketchMorph_class>>defaultNameStemForInstances msgid "*s*ketch"
where it should be (notice the capital S)
#: Morphic-Basic,SketchMorph_class>>defaultNameStemForInstances msgid "*S*ketch"
I don't know what went wrong in the export because it's clearly capitalized in the source code. Anyway, I fixed it by hand (as well as some "Language-Name" entries).
FYI, to export the existing translations to the new format I downloaded all po files from http://etoys.laptop.org/svn/trunk/etoys/po/etoys/ and put them in a directory called "old po files", then I ran the following script:
==================== dir := FileDirectory default directoryNamed: 'old po files'.
dir fileNames do: [:fileName| isoLang := fileName allButLast: 3. localeID := LocaleID isoLanguage: isoLang. translator := InternalTranslator newLocaleID: localeID.
GetTextImporter new importID: localeID fileNamed: 'old po files', isoLang ,'.po'. GetTextExporter new exportTranslator: translator. ] ====================
I'll compile and upload the MO files later.

Maybe you were playing with translations, or an inspector, or something. It's as easy as
SketchMorph defaultNameStemForInstances at: 1 put: $S
and if the string gets passed around one can modify it.
