[Etoys] video tutorials on squeak etoys

I've just posted my first two screencast tutorials on Squeak Etoys: http://waveplace.com/movies The first movie discusses how to install Squeak Etoys and the latest OLPC Etoys image on your computer (particularly if you own a Mac). The next shows Etoys in action for about fifteen minutes. If you listen closely at the end, you may figure out why I ended the movie so abrubtly :) My next screencast will be on Tuesday. Let me know if you were able to view these movies. I used two different approaches to encoding the video, so I'm interested to see how others fare on different systems before I make new ones.

[Etoys] Byproduct by the change to camel case wording

Hello. By the recent update (1691-noCamels-bf), camel case wordings have been "normalized" (like "is over color" from "isOverColor"). But a few things have been broken and need rework: + existing translations for such wordings in NaturalLanguageTranslator have become stale + Regeneration of POs and merge exisitng translation data is needed as msgid changed. + Though I haven't reviewed much, help contents might be updated to be consistent with actual system. + Existing contents in english like community-authored-tutorial) also need adjustment. (It's fortunate we japanese don't have CamelCase and don't need to adjust wording for this change :-) I understand why the change is needed. But the change at this time (approaching FRS) means much impact for us. So we need to rethink about this right now and decide our minds whether we accept the rework, I think. [Etoys] Translucency on the desktop issue

With the last updates comes a handy world handle to change the worlds background color. But the color palette offers to change the translucency of the color as well, with unwanted side effects: a desktop that never paint over deleted or moved stuff. Karl

[Etoys] Devanagari text in Etoys

Hi! I'm trying to figure out how to import Nepali text in the devanagari alphabet into Squeak. I've installed some devangari fonts into Squeak (unicode and non-unicode) and tried: - Copy&Paste of devanagari text via OSX clipboard into a Workspace: I get question-marks. - Typing into a Workspace with OSX keyboard input configured for devanagari: I get blanks instead of letters. - Selecting a non-unicode devanagari font and typing normally: I get devanagari lettering but I don't know what mapping is being used (it's not like the romanised devanagari used by OSX) Any tips? Even something quick-and-dirty would be appreciated as this is for an impending demo :-)

In this way, once the basic topics on etoys and Bots Inc were covered, we narrate some story where the actors are robots and etoys, making a bridge between programming and local folklore. At this moment my class and me are starting to explore the Bots Inc environment for this and we have two questions (I always ask myself if this is the proper place to ask, so point me another place if I'm wrong): * Can the loadImage and lookLike messages of BotsInc support graphics made in other graphical tools, like Inkscape, provided that they are in the proper format (jpeg, png, etc) ? * I have seen the method Pica-Bot>>Bot>>private morphic>>balloonFeedback and I'm trying to get different messages from the robot, for example: | probar | probar := Bot new. probar setBallonText: ('Rin Rin renacuajo...') withCRs. but this doesn't work, only if I change the message in the System Browser I get the desired behavior but I want a method for making the robots say different things. [Etoys] squeak bump #2 ... where did my work go?!?

On an XO with the latest build, Whenever I click either of the right buttons at top ( "Keep a current project" or "Stop and Quit Etoys"), I get the graph paper effect and the jumping jacks "saving" effect, both of which indicate that something is saving. My assumption is that the former saves the current project and the latter saves the image. Neither are true, or so it seems ... when I reload Etoys, the image hasn't changed, and there's no apparent way to load a project. So squeak bump #2 is "where did my work go?!?" While on the subject, it's a bit of a pain to always save when you quit, even if you did nothing new.

In this way, once the basic topics on etoys and Bots Inc were covered, we narrate some story where the actors are robots and etoys, making a bridge between programming and local folklore" Having students create computer programs or games based on indigenous culture could provide a powerful bridge between two cultures, and "Keep our diverse languages and cultural traditions by excelling in education and digital technologies" (Pearson) This is discussed at http://learningevolves.wikispaces.com/indigenous Providing millions of OLPC with Etoys to third world countries is a dangerous experiment and we are well advised to listen to the elders of those ancient cultures: "Much trouble has come from people forgetting the land, the spirit. Many people are sick and have lost their spirit. The white government has cut their culture; we grieve for them. But we can all learn and make our spirit strong. My teaching is about opening your spirit, working together to build understanding. Opening our way, opening our hearts to share the spirit of the land with all who want to learn." (Nganyinytja) Yes using Etoys for telling local folklore is a good idea. There is a large amount of learning already taking place using Etoys-like tools. This learning is largely unresearched, we should find out more about what is working and why and use this to inform the development of Etoys/OLPC Tony

Hi, Should the system scripts, messages and the likewise composed wordings (e.g. removeAllFromPatchDisplayList, getTextColor, makeNewDrawingIn, mouseMove etc) — be literally translated? Suggestions welcomed. — paulo

[Etoys] pinup issues

Hi, In any BorderedMorph (say a Rectangle), popup the border .. menu, click its pinup. Both border menu and its parent menu stays up. If any button on border menu is clicked, both the menus disappear. I find this very annoying. If I want to experiment with different border styles, I have to dig into the halo menu all over or stick both the border and its parent menu up. Did I miss an easier way to keep such menus up? I prefer the doPopUp style menus of items like "new morph...". TIA .. Subbu
