[ANN] Seaside 2.02

Seaside 2.02 has been posted to SqueakMap. There's been some minor reorganization and bug fixing, but the major difference is a new, fairly large example: the beginnings of a SqueakMap browser. Once you have 2.02 loaded, point your browser to http://localhost:9090/sm to try it out. And start adding features ;). (I don't necessarily recommend updating through SqueakMap, though - better would be to file it in clean to a new image. Need to get that SMDVSInstaller going...) Cheers, Avi

Debugger

Hi all There are a lot of web-base tools for like a browser, an inspector and a profiler. What is still missing is the debugger! So I started today with an implementation for the web: Of course there is no difference between the Squeak debugger and the web-based one, because they share the same model. When you file-in the attached change-set in case of an error a debugger will show up in your web-browser. You are able to step trough the code, inspect context and variables, restart, etc. Unfortunately you are not able to edit the code and there is no way to go back to your application. Probably Avi can give me some hints how to achieve this, I think it is not that easy. As you see it is far form perfect: - there is no possibility to jump back to the web-application - you are not able to modify the code - sometimes the layout looks quite ugly - strange things happen sometimes to the stack-list - ... [ANN] Seaside 2.0

Hi all, I'd like to announce an initial release of the Seaside 2.0 web application framework. This is a complete reimplementation of Seaside, with a highly layered design and simpler, more "Smalltalk-like" semantics than the original. A changeset is available from http://beta4.com/seaside2 , as is a tutorial (for those who want to get a general sense of how it works) and some low-level design documents (for those who have an interest in how it's implemented). This is a preview release - Seaside 2.0 is still a work in progress. What this release includes: - Linear control flow. Rather than providing handlers at the individual request level, Seaside models an entire session as a continuous piece of code. To put it another way, Seaside web applications block on user input, allowing a much more natural and powerful development style. - Callback-based event system. Seaside provides an HTML generator that associates blocks, not urls, with links, buttons, and form inputs. - Solid component model. Implement stateful widgets and pages as reusable and embeddable component classes. - Backtracking safety. All of the above are designed to work consistently and reliably in the face of the browser back button. A transaction system allows the developer to selectively limit the scope of backtracking. - In-browser development tools. Seaside provides an integrated web-based inspector, system browser, profiler, and notifier. What this release does not yet include: - A fully fledged View library. In time, I expect to be able to provide a large number of widgets and layout managers to facilitate programmatic UI design. - A templating system. Earlier versions of Seaside had a very sophisticated template system, which would be nice to adapt and improve. - Good ways of dealing with static content, including images, .css files, and non-generated HTML. All of these features are missing largely because I believe they will be best explored through community feedback. After people get a chance to play with the base framework, I'd love to hear some discussion on how the above could work. Cheers, Avi

Just installed 3.2 on Linux. Font size is too small and the tip in the FAQ does not work. How might I change font and size?

problem with download button

some time ago I asked about a way to provide a way to download some stuff; I was pointed to the IADynamicResource class. As a simple test I used self callPage:(mumble resource setup etc) which seemed to work ok. Now I'm trying to make non-demo use of it and I've hit an interesting looking problem I have an action within a component and the error is in IAPAge>parent: - apparently we can't embed an IAPage. I'm not sure how I'm doing this heinous activity, but maybe someone can help me. It seems like it would be generally pretty useful to have a download button available anywhere. [JOB] Smalltalking Skier Wanted

Hi all, I'm looking for someone to fill a full-time developer position here a Whistler.com. We operate a central reservations service in Whistler, which is a major ski resort just north of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The reservations are processed by an in-house reservation system, which we've developed over the last several years. We're currently in the early stages of a migration away from our PHP codebase to a more object-oriented architecture. Most of our new work is being done in Squeak, and we expect to gradually port everything to Smalltalk. I'm looking for an experienced developer who's comfortable working in Smalltalk and PHP. We're a small, agile development team practicing a sort of pseudo-XP, so physical presence in our Whistler office is important. Being a skier, snowboarder, or mountain biker is a big plus, if not an actual requirement. Our ethic is "Work hard, play hard." [Borges] Squeak Chess

Hi all There is a quite cool implementation of the chess-game in the standard Squeak image. My web-application uses this model and makes it playable in a web-browser. To run the game, download and file-in the latest sources of Borges. I used the ones available with CVS. Then file-in the "Chess.cs" change-set, start the server using the following commands WAKom startOn: 8080. WAChessBoard initialize. and point your preferred web-browser to http://localhost:8080/chess. To make the images look much better you have to make a little change to Borges; these are not included in the change-set! Just change the third line of the message "WAHtmlRenderer>>imageWithForm: aForm" where the callback-block is defined to callback := [ WASession currentSession respondWithDocument: aForm asWebImage ]. Of course the application is not perfect at all. One of the problems is that the browser is sometimes not able to load all the images. I don't know, but that seems to be a problem of Borges. Another issue is that no status is given while the computer is thinking, but that could be added later. Enjoy playing :-) Lukas
