small seaside image

A while ago I mentioned on this list a stripped 3.7-based Seaside image that was around 7.5MB. A couple of people have emailed me offlist asking for it, and I've finally gotten around to actually putting one up somewhere. Swazoo versions

Hi, Today I was playing with the published version of Seaside made by Avi Bryant the last week, which uses the Swazoo version for Dolphin made by Sean Malloy, to add some missing functionalities I had working in my earlier port of Seaside to Dolphin. Considering to what Sean says in his website, the port is based on the 0.9.101 version, while Steve Waring's one is based on 0.9.99 (apparently). Sean's version is more conscise in terms of number of packages, but it misses some classes such as SwazooSiteScript and other very useful tools, available in Steve's version. Considering that the Swazoo topic got warm this days, and that today it's more a jungle than a zoo ;-), we could arrange some efforts to make it converge into a single stream of development, at least compatible with what already exists in Dolphin. For example, you can't have Seaside and Spray web services running on the same image, because they're incompatible (besides the fact that the naming convention of Steve is different to the Sean's one*). Plus, Dolphin ships with Steve's version, which is appropriate considering the existing goodies and packages available, but not the best option aiming to a broader audience through Seaside and other popular developments that would come. I leave the topic here, to see if there is enough interest to make it happen. I would like to see Sean, Steve, Janko, the OA people, perhaps Bruce Badger too, and anybody willing to collaborate at least in testing, joining efforts for this. Note: this message is only relevant for people using Seaside on Squeak. I think. I've just committed a version to the 2.7a branch which includes a couple of changes we use internally for Dabble DB. The main change I just made recently, and although it seems fine, it's hackish enough that I'd be curious to have others take a look at it. It takes a bit of explanation. The background is this: we had some users complaining that if they opened up a number of tabs in their browser, sometimes when they went back to an old tab the links they clicked on would have no effect. This is, of course, because we expire old continuations, and their old tabs were falling out of the LRU cache. So I tried bumping up (way up, to like 500) the number of continuations kept in the cache. Not that surprisingly, I saw a massive increase (cripplingly so) in the size of the Seaside sessions. The interesting thing was what a space analysis of these huge images showed. The space wasn't, largely, being used by stored method contexts or snapshotted state. It was almost all instances of String, and some random sampling of these showed that almost all of them were from CSS class or id attributes. Huh? What was happening was this: I would have a render method that would construct a CSS class or ID, usually by combining some string literal with some number. Then I would pass that class or ID into another render method. Minimally, it might look like this: renderCellForColumn: aNumber on: html |class| class := 'tableColumn', (aNumber \\ 2 + 1) asString. self renderCellWithClass: class on: html Then that other render method would generate a callback, like this: renderCellWithClass: aString on: html html tableData class: aString; with: [html anchor callback: [self doStuff]; text: 'Do stuff'] Because aString was constructed, it was a new instance every time. And because it was in the home context for the callback block (even though it wasn't used from the block), it was held onto by the callback, which is held onto for (in my case) quite a long time. And when you have tables with thousands of cells, each with one of these CSS classes, it builds up. So, ok, one lesson here is to be more careful about constructing strings (I could have 'tableColumn1' and 'tableColumn2' literals and an if statement), or to intern them. But I was curious if I could solve the problem more generally than that. After all, the block doesn't *need* to be holding onto aString. So I added a #tempVarRefs method to BlockContext. This scans the bytecodes for the block and returns the indices of any temps that the block uses. I think added a variation of #fixTemps named #fixCallbackTemps which, after copying the home context, goes through the temps and nils out any that don't appear in #tempVarRefs. I then changed every reference to #fixTemps within Seaside to #fixCallbackTemps. The upshot is that all stored callbacks in Seaside should avoid holding onto any temps that they don't actually use. I'm hoping this will lead to a noticeable reduction in memory footprint in the general case, but I haven't done any tests yet. I also haven't done any thorough testing of #tempVarRefs to make sure that #fixCallbackTemps does, in fact, leave the semantics of the block unchanged compared to #fixTemps. I would love it if someone had the time to review the code and run some such tests. Meanwhile, we're using it in production with no ill effects reported so far... Cheers, Avi

Multiple style sheets

I want my page to be able to alternate between two stylesheets. You can read the technique here: http://www.alistapart.com/stories/alternate/ and examples here: http://www.csszengarden.com/ I've written this using XHTML/CSS and a Javascript styleswitcher (so it's client side switching) in the following way: <link rel="stylesheet" href="styles/bare.css" type="text/css" title="Bare" media="screen, projection" /> <link rel="alternate stylesheet" href="styles/blue.css" type="text/css" title="Blue" media="screen, projection" /> <script type="text/javascript" src="styles/styleswitch.js"></script> does anybody knows how can (or at least the easiest way) achieve this in Seaside? (I´m using Squeak with Seaside 2.61-mb8. I've seen an e-mail from Avi Bryant from may 2004 but haven't found anything in the SqueakMap and Cincom Public Repository, any idea?). Juan

[ANN] Preview RSRSS

Hi Inspired by a talk Lukas gave at ESUG I created something called RSRSS (Really Simple RSS) [1]. It allows you to create RSS 2.0 feeds with the Seaside canvas API. Emphasis is on simple. What does preview mean? There's no real documentation about the elements so you need to be familiar with the RSS spec. I plan to copy and paste the explanations from the spec into the methods. Also you have to pass correctly formatted strings to make sure it validates. This is mostly an issue for email addresses and timestamps. Debugging does not work like in Seaside applications. Sorry about that. call:/answer: doesn't work (and doesn't really sense). Subcomponents should work (although you probably won't need them). It implements the full 2.0 specification (unless I've forgotten something) but no modules (and also not Dublin Core). The demo validates against W3C Feed Validation Service and the Validome RSS and Atom validator. I didn't check against Feed Validator [5] which is probably the most strict. This mail is basically to find out if there is any interest in this kind of stuff. Authentication in Seaside

Hi Seasiders! I have a little question about a way to do some authentication in Seaside. I looked the configuration page and I found an Auth decoration. I give it a try but it gave me ´an all or nothing´ solution. To access the whole application I have to enter the user name and password just like the Seaside configuration. I need to give some access to, for example, an admin user type and restrict others (student users). Lets say the application needs to have three types of users. Admins with all the privileges, students with some privileges but restrict others, and a normal user as a simple viewer (he/she can't change a thing). Is there a recipe or some guidelines to make this in a simple and elegant way, perhaps with decoration I think? I´m a little lost here. Thank for the help!

Tidying up

I am looking at my image to try and clean it up a bit. Having clearedCaches I can still find 78 instances of WASession, 702 instances of EscapeContinuation, 722 instances of ResponseContinuation, 905 instances of WACurrentSession, 865 instances of WARenderCanvas. and so on... any ideas where to look to get the image to let go and let garbage?
