[Goodie] Janus

Janus, the two-headed god, makes his entry in Seasideland! http://tai42.xs4all.nl/~cg/mc has the initial MC file for 'Tric-Janus', which is a small package that makes Seaside apps spider-friendly in the following way: It can be used instead of WAKom (so 'JanusKom startOn: 1234'), and inspects every request: - a request for /robots.txt is intercepted (note: forward these requests from Apache!). If the request is made from a known spider, everything is allowed; otherwise, everything is denied - a corresponding text file is returned; - a known spider makes a different request. If yes, the cache of 'static pages' is used to answer the request; - all other requests are passed to the code in WAKom. The 'cache of static pages' needs to be built up by the application. This might be application-dependent - the current solution certainly is, because it assumes that at the time the request is handled, the whole structure of the page is known. JanusSession can be used for Janus-aware subclasses and simply adds a method #addToPath:staticContents which does the same as the original #addToPath:, but also registers the passed static contents in the cache of static pages under the full path. Furthermore, JanusKom has a class-side method to register certain urls as indexes - this can be used to make sure that for certain urls an index rather than a page is returned, which might help in some cases to suck a bot into a site. So, when Janus decides to feed from the static pages cache, it returns a known page under the requested URL (if not overridden as an index URL) or, if no pages is found, an index. An index consists of a list of HREFs to all the static pages in the cache with the same prefix as the requested URL (I'm not sure there whether this is the best solution). Gardner (same MC repository) has been modified to support this. GWSession subclasses from JanusSession and calls #addToPath:staticContents:, and GWPage has a method #renderStatic to support this - the only difference is that this method renders path-based rather than Seaside-based HREFs. The end result should be that Gardner Wikis can be visited by spiders without problems, while still allowing you the freedom to add Seaside bells&whistles. Also, the spiders will not see any of the Wiki buttons etcetera, so they'll pull much less data from your site (they won't have access to all the old versions, for example). Furthermore, this might be a nice way to render static wikis - just hit the site with wget -m (which Janus thinks is a spider) and you get a copy. I've added a list of 158 user agent patterns I grabbed from The InternetOne's webserver logs, if there are any remarks about the list I'll be happy to hear it. There's still work to be done, like not writing the cache on every hit, etcetera, but at this time I'm mostly interested in comments about the operating principle. Regards, Cees

Gardner fun

Greetings all, (I'm using Seaside v54, Kom 6.2, Tric-Gardner-CdG.26, Tric-Janus-CdG.4) I am attempting to migrate from Swiki/ComSwiki to Gardner and was wondering about the state of GWSwikiConverter. I did this in a Workspace: GWObjectMemoryStorage wikis removeKey: 'devinfo'. GWSwikiConverter convert: '/Volumes/brian/Squeak/ComSwiki/swiki/devinfo' toWikiInMemory: 'devinfo'. Which worked after I "hacked" some debugs. I use the term "hacked" loosely, due my lack of knowlege regarding Gardner :) In SWWikiParser>>reduceActionForcode1, I commented out: action assertPermission: SWPage permissionCode." Due to the fact that SWPage doesn't exist in my image. Anyway, it seemed to go, (well, the progress bar completed). But now what do I do with it... there was no new wiki created from a seaside perspective, so I assume I have a wiki in memory. So, I tried this: GWSwikiConverter convert: '/Volumes/brian/Squeak/ComSwiki/swiki/devinfo' to: (GWSmartRefStreamStorage newOn: 'devinfo'). Which failed in GWSwikiConverter>>convert with an error about using only integers as indices at: numberToTitle at: each id printString put: each name. page := target at: each id printString. On another note, when I installed it, the default wiki wouldn't work, but when I created a new on via the seaside config, the new one worked. Anyone else using Gardner that could shed some light on things? Thanks! Brian

KomHttp error

Hi all, I've started using Kom 6.2 with seaside and have gotten an error several times. It's in HttpAdaptor>>dispatchRequest: which gives a MessageNotUnderstood: String>>addCookies. request is turning up as an empty string, which I'm sure is an error :-) It should be an HttpResponse, I think. Any ideas? thanks! Brian

How to set the filename of a returned document?

My application returns pdf files with: MyComponent>>renderContentOn: html html anchorWithDocument: contents mimeType: 'application/pdf' text: 'download'. The pdf files returned have names based on the session ids, e.g. @kMhhyhwLYiKxjcRl How can I go about setting the filename of the returned document to something else, such as "generated_document.pdf"? Seaside Portlet [IDEA]

Hi All, I am continuing to play with seaside, and it is indeed simple to use. I will post to the list a user preference component, when I have finished it...and... I think we can organize the "component" repository of seaside stealing [ ;) ] the idea inside the "Java Portlet Spec" of IBM. <http://www.jcp.org/aboutJava/communityprocess/review/jsr168/> In short Portlet are a sub-spec of Servlet, born to get "resuable portal components" for aggregating data inside a web site, thinked as a portal. For more info see the provided url and the ibm site ;) A "Seaside Portlet" would be much powerful than a Java portlet because: 1. Seaside can define an abstract PortletRenderer to be mapped as a render for HTML, WML and so on. We should only stop to use "html text:...." and start to think in terms of "view renderText:...." and so on, speaking of "abstract buttons" instead of form buttons etc. For example a MorphRenderer should be able to render a seaside component onsqueak screen! 2. We can aggregate seaside components in a very simple way! Sometimes I think the render: and call: method are the TRUE power of seaside.... 3. We can review a lot of not-so-good idea like doView/doEdit/doHelp behavior....ore reimplement it in a SIMPLER way using call/answer etc 4. Best, we can implement a Zope-like hierarchical security model, more powerful than the actual portlet secuirty model (very limited in my own opinion, in respect of customer needs). These idea are old, but the proposed solution aren't goodL for instance Coccoon and JetSpeed are very powerful but also very difficult to use! And WebSphere Portal is too big. and need a big database... What do you think? newbie: don't get seaside running

Hi, I am very new to Smalltalk and Seaside (started 30 minutes ago). By now, I have managed to install all the packages as described in http://beta4.com/seaside2/tutorial.html. Now I am stuck with the following description: > [...] evaluate the following piece of code in a Workspace: > > WAKom startOn: 9090 How do I evaluate this? Session Expirary Seconds

Is it possible to programmatically change the session expirary seconds, and only have the change take effect for a single session? If so, then when a search engine bot visits a Seaside site, we could make the pages of that session not expire until the next time a bot from that same search engine visits again. I believe doing this would make a Seaside app spider-friendly. Pages that the spider-bot records with the search engine would then not expire until the next time the bot revisits. Comments? How can I access the authenticated user of a request?

For a small application I am building for a client (FWIW: a directory/file browser with access control based on the user/password), I need to access the "authenticated user" part of a request. WARequest>>user seems to be what I want but how do I access the request? My apologies if I'm missing something obvious. Thanks in advance, Ian.
