[ANN] SeasideTemplate

Hi all, I have done a simple template system for Seaside: http://homepage.mac.com/alain_fischer/mc/SeasideTemplate-AFi.1.mcz This is probably full of bugs but I am using it and it seem to work well. Prerequisite: - Seaside - SmaCC How to use it: Make your components subclass of SSTComponent. The template can be embeded or external - embeded: create a method templateString in your component - external: create a file templates/MyComponent.sst.html The format of templates is html text with smalltalk code between "<?sst" and "?>" Html text is translated as: html text: 'my html text'. Smalltalk code is simply copied. Known issue: - Parsing of template are slow, but since they are cached in an autogenerated method this is not a big problem. I will see how to improve parsing speed with SmaCC rather than writing a custom parser. Enjoy using this. Alain

Need arguments to sell Seaside

Hello all, At the begining of the next week, I will make a small presentation to try to sell Seaside and Squeak to my collegues and my bosses. Till now we are using WebObjects and for a lot of reason more the time is going less I am happy to work with this framework in Java. I am searching for good arguments to use Seaside. The arguments I see now are: - Developing with smalltalk is efficient by coding with living objects (debugger, inspector, explorer). - In most of the case an application in production could be fixed, ehanced without redeploying and restarting. - There is multiple solution for persitance (GOODS, Roe, others for production ?). - Seaside is nice: - to reverse request response with the use of continuation, - with the handling of back button in browser, - the the return value of components. Any other idea is more than welcome. Alain

simulating user actions in code

i need to display a page that would behave the same as if the user clicked all the way to it - the user will get an email with URL that should open the application initialized to predefined state. i talked to avi earlier about this and his advice was "to trigger the same methods the user would but catch the RenderNotification so that the intermediate pages don't get shown". i have getting the necessary info from URL etc finished, i just can't figure out how to do the triggering because the page i want to display is two or three #call:s deep from the root component and a call won't return (without user interaction) thus i can't trigger another one... displaying the specific page as root component is not really useful in my case regards, radoslav -- pgp.mit.edu 0x30DEBAE6 12EE FED5 D5B1 77ED 5637 EB77 2A5F 22F9 30DE BAE6

Newbie questions

Hello! I have found out a few days ago about the Seaside framework. Of course, the capabilities of Seaside seem to go beyond any framework I am currently aware of. And it seems to be best fit for what I have to do: to redesign an Intranet which I developed originally in PHP/MySQL. The reason I have to switch from PHP are: a. No matter what frameworks I use, changes are sooo slow to implement, and my customers require a high degree of flexibility and b. Using PHP forces me to concentrate more on coding forms and to try to tie up various files in a coherent application, which is again very time and energy comsuming, rather than focusing on the features of the application itself. So, I am very determined to switch to Seaside. OK, here are my questions: 1. I have gathered the available tutorials and articles available: - A Walk On The Seaside from http://beta4.com/seaside2/tutorial.html - HTML Render Reference from http://beta4.com/seaside2/renderer.html - Seaside: Design Overview from http://beta4.com/seaside2/borges.html - A Table Example from http://swiki.squeakfoundation.org/sea/62 - The (whole!) archive of this list However, I feel I cannot go very far with these. I mean, I *could* go, but only if I trace the execution of the code, step by step (no class comments - sigh - ), and that would take me very much time. Can anyone point me to any other sources of learning? 2. At this point, I have a certain understanding of how to build a WAComponent. Let me explain, by using an example (very simplified), what I would like to do and where I am stuck: - the start of my application would be a page (A) displaying three links: = customers = orders = payments - When clicking on customers, another page (B) with the complete list of customers will be displayed. Each of the customers would have a link. - When clicking on a customer, another page (C) with info about the customer will be displayed. The problem is that I do not want the application to keep track of the pages so that I can go back to them by means of call - answer. Instead, I would like to have a top page that would be like a wrapper for the current page. When clicking on a link, I would like the corresponding page to replace the current page (that is, the action of the link would signal the top page that the page it contains should change to a different one). How can I do this? I cannot use call-answer because I will then impose a very strict way of using the intranet and I would require the users to always go back. This would go against the way the intranet is made now, that is allowing the users to browse the information freely in as many ways as possible (of course, there are links to go back to the main page or to some sections). I would use call-answer when a certain flow is involved (entering new information, validating, displaying a result or an error page and then retrying). I have read the opinions about state and stateless, but I feel like my application must have some stateless parts. There was aWAContainer mentioned in http://lists.squeakfoundation.org/pipermail/seaside/2002-November/000865.ht…, but it seems to be thrown out in the current release of Seaside. Is there any other class I could use? 3. I assume that if I continuously use call:s and no answers, I will end up with some sort of overflow somewhere in the framework. Is it correct? 4. WAView has dropped out from the framework? It was mentioned in this mailing list, for instance in http://lists.squeakfoundation.org/pipermail/seaside/2002-November/000855.ht… However, I did not find a class with that name. If any of these questions has been answered before in this list, please direct me to the month. I will pick it up from there. Sorry for the rather long message. I will share a last thought: although Seaside seems like the best framework I have ever seen, the lack of documentation makes me wonder if I will ever be able to use all its features in a decent way. popup window

Anybody know of a way to do this?: I have a Seaside component, which renders a button (among other things). The button is hooked to an action method of the component, such that when the button is pressed, the method executes. (in other words, the component is doing just normal Seaside stuff here) But, I would like a small popup window to pop up for the user, either before the action method executes, or at the beginning of executing the action method. Then when the action method finishes executing, I would like the popup window to go away. Basically, the popup window would be a "Please wait..." message that would be displayed to the user during execution of any action method that needs the user to be a little more patient (i.e., action methods that take a long time to execute, like 15 or 20 seconds or even longer). Then, when the action method finishes, the "Please wait..." message automatically goes away. Anybody know how to do that? Installing Seaside???

I'm puzzled. I try to install Seaside (& squeak :) on my freebsd-current box. The squeak port installs the 3.5 image and 3.4-1 machine. (This is the first time I installed squeak. My older experiences with smalltalk are well over 10 years old) I choose open-package browser, the system installs SqueaqMap, the package loader pops up - everything fine sofar. I can install Mcinstaller, sarinstaller for 3.4 (found out I seem to need this to install komhttpserver) but komhttpserver, while trying to install dvs. stops with: Installation of package release failed, message follows: named: I can't get over this (installing DVS directly does not help) Any ideas, hints, tips, pointers to documentation so I might understand the package system better.
