[VW] Implementing pooled database connections

I'm implementing pooled database connection for seaside sessions. Here's my first cut at it: (PoolSession is a subclass of WASession, but that's not important for the moment). PoolSession>>initialize pool := SharedQueue new. PoolSession>>addToPool: anObject pool nextPut: anObject PoolSession>>withPooledDo: aBlock | poolEntry | [poolEntry := pool next. aBlock value: poolEntry] ensure: [pool nextPut: poolEntry] Is that enough to ensure after use the connection gets put back in the pool or do I need some additional exception catching or process arbitration or whatever? I probably want to validate the pooled connection before giving it out so dead database connections get discarded/replaced, but that's for later. mjl

One(?) more way to serve an image -- comments requested

In the context of "Canvas" I see the following mechanisms to serve an image: 1) The image is in an external file served by an external server. Use: html image url: 'http://some.server/path/to/image'. This mechanism has no effect on Seaside's dispatcher. A small variation uses a fixed "resource base": html image resourceUrl: 'path/relative/to/resource/base' where the resource base is set in the configuration tool. 2) The image is in an external file to be read and served by Seaside (via a WACachedDocumentHandler). Use: html image fileName: 'someName.jpg' mimeType: 'image/whatever' This mechanism adds a permanent (until "clear all caches" is invoked) entry point to the dispatcher. The file will be read once, upon the first request for it, and cached forever in Squeak. Incidentally it seems like there are potential concurrency problems in the class-side code for storing the image in the Images dictionary. Given the way browsers load images this will probably cause problems sooner rather than later. 3) The image is in Squeak in a form. Use html image form: someForm This mechanism adds a permanent (until "clear all caches" is invoked) entry point to the dispatcher. This entry point is handled by a WADocumentHandler which retains a reference to the form so the form's lifetime is now the same or longer than the entry point's. 4) (missing) The image is in Squeak in the form of a byte array. Propose: html image data: someByteArray mimeType: 'image/whatever' This mechanism would add a permanent (until "clear all caches" is invoked) entry point to the dispatcher. This entry point could be handled by a WADocumentHandler which retains a reference to the form so the form's lifetime is now the same or longer than the entry point's. Another thing that seems to be missing is the ability to tie the lifetime of the image's entry point to the lifetime of the session that caused its creation. I know that ShoreComponents adds facilities to serve images as part of the session. I'm not sure that's what I want since it effectively serializes access to the images. Still, this serialization is important when your image is really a proxy to an object stored in a DB since most(all?) of the OODB clients in Squeak are not thread safe. This seems to give rise to the following (not completely orthogonal) concepts when serving an image: a) Nature of the image data a.1) External file a.2) Form a.3) Byte array b) Desired lifetime of the entry point related to the image b.1) Infinite (until caches cleared, that is) b.2) Same as lifetime of session which created it c) Desired access rules for the image c.1) Image can be accessed any time c.2) Image can only be accessed when no other request is being processed for the session that created it or any other images created by that session Some combinations are currently supported, others are not. Of course not much of this is particular to images. What the Canvas provides for is the ability to create new entry points. We can have any kind of content on those entry points as we like. I invite others to critique my classification above. I think it could be turned into code but I'm not sure that it is complete.... David

You should have one of your components be declared as a root of the application, say MyWebApplication, via MyWebApplication class>>canBeRoot ^true MyWebApplication class>>initialize | app | app := self registerAsApplication: 'myapplication'. (app libraries) add: MyWebApplicationScripts; add: MyWebApplicationStyles where MyWebApplicationScripts and MyWebApplicationStyles are subclasses of WAScriptLibrary and WAStyleLibrary respectively. Hi all, how do I use the libraries. I just want to keep CSS in one place instead of using WAComponent>>style. So I read on this list to use a library, I've subclassed WAStyleLibrary but I'm not sure how to set it up. Thanks Günther

Accessing the query from WATask?

I'd like to make use of WATask to model a process but part of the requirement is to grab a piece of the initial query to start out the process. At the moment I can't find a way to do this. Once again I'm using Seaside 2.5 in Squeak3.8. Ken

serve jpg image files from form objects

hello out there, allthough i browsed throught the archives i couldn`t find the answer to my problem. i want to serve a jpg-file which is stored in a Form object. so i do : aForm _ (Form fromFileNamed: 'wave.jpg') then i tried the following inside the #renderContentOn: method : html imageWithDocument: aForm bits asByteArray mimeType: 'image/jpeg' fileName: root name,'Picture', '.jpg'. this doesn`t work, and when i am acceptin the following, seaside seems to convert the jpg file to gif or wracks up the picture file somehow : html imageWithDocument: aForm mimeType: 'image/jpeg' fileName: root name,'Picture', '.jpg'. anybodys having some experience with this issue? thanks for help! martin

[MEWA] Problem with singleRelationshipAttribute:

Hi Guys: I've found an odd behavior using #singleRelationshipAttribute:. After saving an object that has some "data" of another objects linked by a singleRelationshipAttribute, when I try to edit it, sometimes the edition works ok, but other times don't work, showing the nilItemString: instead the proper data. I can't precise exactly when, but may be sometimes when I import data from XML (using SIXX) or from serialized objects (using ReferenceStream). My first suspicion was that the data were bad formatted by the serializer or the sixx, then I've developed a simple report (using WATableReport) but the data seems to be ok in all cases. Then, putting somes "self halt" here and there, I've inspected and explored bad showed and correctly showed objects, and both (bad edited and correctly edited) look exactly equals, but yet some (the not imported) are correctly edited (*) and the imported from out of the image are showing the nillItemString at the combo instead the correct data. (*) Edition is done using MWEditorVisitor. Well, it's all for now, any help will be appreciated. Best Regards. gsa.
