(1) As noted by Rado and others there is a bug in the Squeak compatibility method allSubInstances method. It should be changed to : Object class >> allSubInstances ^self allGeneralInstances I will integrate this change in the port. (2) It looks to me as if the above bug only affects the situations where it is desired to release intentionnally and instantly as many objects as possible, where you want to do "WARegistry clearAllHandlers", i.e. the panic situation. This bug does not affect the normal Seaside operations. (3) It looks to me as if Seaside objects are correctly collected as needed under normal Seaside operations, i.e. collected as intended. It did not find any report of anomalies in the mailing list. (4) There seems to be an agreement that the technique currently used by Seaside for triggering the discarding of expired sessions is not adequate. The current technique does the discarding once every 10 new sessions in average. One alternate technique (from Michael Meyer) would be to do the discarding each time a new session is started: WARegistry>>shouldCollectHandlers ^true Another alternate technique (from David Shaffer) would be to have a separate forked process taking care of the discarding every nnn seconds in the background allowing the discarding to occur even when there are no new session. Any other idea ? (5) As David Shaffer noted, the discarding of expired sessions by Seaside and the collection of the corresponding garbage by VW are two independent processes. Enjoy, Michel.

Hosting test apps in squeak/seaside

This bug does not affect the normal Seaside operations. I use seaside exclusively in VWNC 7.3. I usually run: MyApplication initialize. WASession allInstances do: [ : item | item expire]. To try and expire the 15-20 sessions that are hanging around after time spent developing. Sometimes this works fine, other times it fails. Which makes me wonder if there isnt something else under the hood that needs to be looked into. I'll try the fixes posed in this thread tonite and see what results I get. Im in favor of trying to expire sessions everytime a new session is created unless we can see the checking process is expensive. meanwhile keep up the good work in porting to VW. New Project Recommendations?

I want to use Seaside to serve out some database type info on Mac OSX but am new to Seaside, www serving, Apache, Comanche etc., etc.. So far I have a domain name and that's about it. The data will be for internal low volume use to start with but hopefully will progress to something useful for general Internet access. I know there are several databases being used with Seaside but how would I decide which is the best one for what I have in mind? Should I use Comanche or Apache? What is the best way to get jump started into all of this wonderful stuff? I'm aware of the pre-built image and the stuff on http://www.seaside.st/ and have rooted around a bit. Have not actually tried anything yet. Any helpful pointers and recommendations will be greatly appreciated. Thx Ken

Garbage Collection

Hi, I've created 4 instances of WAStore in different windows and some with the new session button. Every minute I do a WAStore allInstances size and it answers 4, as expected. What I didn't expect was for all of these instance to still be there after 15 minutes, I had expected for them to be garbage collected after more than 600 seconds had passed. How come they didn't clear out of memory? I ran this test with store because I have 36 constantly persistent instances of another TopFrame component that I wrote myself and presumed I had made some mistake that would keep all those instances persistent. But since even the sample WAStore instances stay persistent indefinitely I guess the problem lies elsewhere. Günther I'm using Seaside on VWNC 7.3

Importing halo's from Monticello

Hallo, What is the process behind importing the halo images into the image from a Monticello? I can see that the hallo images are Form's stored in an IdentityDictionary, but I want to know how they are loaded/imported? Thanks, Mart-Mari

Panic button?

Hi, is there a "Panic Button"?. I did something apparently stupid, while trying to run some code in Seaside. The systems memory consumption went from 30MB to 100+ MB and stays there (according to MemoryUsage) and feels sluggish. I reckon I've sent the system into some sort of loop and would like to break out of it. Any ideas how to do that? Günther

VW specific FYI: In VW, literals are marked as immutable, so storing into the literal will cause an error. You can mark the literal as mutable. How can I handle "ä , ö" in seaside ?
