Lack of documentation frustrating

Hi, I am volunteering at a local school, and will be doing squeakland once a week with some fifth graders. Squeakland (etoys?) seems ideal for these kids, except that I'm frustrated by the lack of documentation. I've spent ages looking through the website and searching online, and I can't really find the kinds of things I'm looking for. I went through some of the tutorials myself, and those will be great to get started, but I would like to give the kids fairly free reign, and be able to answer most of their questions. I tried to do some little projects myself, but I kept coming up with seemingly simple things I wanted to do, and not finding any obvious way to do them (or, as I say, any documentation suitable for answering the questions). For example: I wanted to make an etoy follow the mouse pointer around. I can't see any way of even obtaining a reference to a mouse object. I would also like to do loops and suchlike. Not obvious how to do that. I can see that if I can dive down into the smalltalk level, I could do it, but this seems like the kind of thing that's probably at the squeakland (etoy? What do I call the kids' environment?) level. But as I say, what I'm really looking for is not this particular fish, but how to fish for myself. I would buy a book, but the one pointed at from the website appears to just be a set of projects, rather than the kind of documentation I'm looking for. Squeak: Learn Programming by Controlling Robots looks like it might be sort of what I'm looking for, although I'm interested in a broader range of Squeakland projects than just the turtle graphics mentioned in the summary of the book. So: where is the documentation it seems ought to be there? Thanks.

Test if script is running ?

I have a button thats starts a script and that script is 'ticking' for a while and then pauses. Is there a way to test if the script is running so multiple clicks on the button does not restart the 'ticking' script ? I tested to drop the script name tile in a tester but that was not possible. Karl

Problems loading old projects

I have run across a few issues loading some old projects. The project loading had problems with the encoding, that was quite easy to fix. But and other issue is that the font's in the image have changed since the project were made. Upon loading the font's are replaced by the images default eToy font and that screws up the layout of all scripts. Is there a way to relayout all the scripts or do I have to do this manually by making new scripts ? Karl

Using binary conditions as a part of a Test Box

Hi all, There is a way to put two condition as a part of a Test Box in a Etoys script. We can add more operant to a condition, but all the operators are aritmetic ones: "+", "-", "*", "//", and "\\" but there is a way to create a Test condition with "and" or "or"? I don't know if I made myself clear enough. Cheers, Offray

Woking in a Collaborative asinchronous way on Etoys

Hi all, I'm trying to work with my students on a Etoy project, a Lemmings/Pingus Clon, where every student select a feature of the game: Making the creatures fall, blown up, drag (horizontal and vertical). Now we want to integrate all the work. There is a possibility to make this on Squeak (using a superwiki, Monticello, anything)... or the only way to integrate the work on Etoys is redoing it all on a project? Cheers, Offray

Hi all, My students and me are creating a clon of Pingus/Lemmings, using Etoys. Because this was a collaborative project, every one need to pick up a feature and implement a list of Etoys scripts that made that feature work: One script for stopping and changing direction of other creatures, one script for making them to fall (and controlling falling) and so on. All of the scripts were implemented for the same creature, but every student choose one script to work. Now I want to integrate all the behaviors with out redoing them. Is this possible? I was thiking in something like Monticello, but jecel, from the #Squeak Irc Channel said that Monticello wants to save the classes not their implementations. As always Thanks for any quick pointer to the solution, and if this is not the proper list to ask, please don't hesitate to point me the right place either. Cheers, Offray

Making Cultural simulations on Kedama

Hi all, First, thanks for the SqueakFest2006. It was really awesome to be here, to know all that squeakers, to listen them, and to speak with them (a little). If love is the key to make visitors become residents, thanks for such warm act of love in such nice city :) I'm now getting back to my academical activities and I'm wondering, after the speak of Yoshiki, if Kedama can be used to make cultural simulations also (may be you remember that I'm interested in the "Cultural Thing" of cognition also). I'm thinking to start with a specific simulations showed in the book The Complexity of Cooperation from Robert Axelrod. It's about culture dissemination. Axelrod model different cultures as part of a grid (that where the idea of using Kedama come from). Every culture is a cell in that grid and every culture has a number of traits (for example 5) wich can have different values (lets say 10). What Axelrod says is that when two agents (cultures) are similar one to each other (it' means they share the same value in the same trait) they have more possibilities to interact and become even more similar. The algorithm is something like this: Repeat these two steps as much as wanted: 1) Select randomly a culture in the grid and select randomly a neighbor of that culture (in such grid neighbors can be on north, south, west or est). 2) This two cultures interact with a probability equal to their cultural similarity (that is, the number of similar values in the same trait of these two cultures). That interaction consist in selecting a trait where this two cultures are different and change the value of that trait for the value of the neighbor. The process define a set of culture regions. If you have an image that you believe others would like to use (a good example is the v3.9 developers image), please let us know and we will include the description and link location on the "download" page of the squeak.org web site. Where to ask the questions,

Hi all, I'm wondering where to ask the questions about Squeak. Long time ago, I was asking on squeakland, but after a time asking about Kedama I found that, some questions get more attention on Squeak Beginners. Recently I have being asking about accented characters and "hipertext" in Bookmorph but I get not pointer to an aswer. ¿it is better to ask in another list? or I'm making the questions in a wrong way?
