Teaching in digital society vs industrial society

I have just watched a most interesting video a friend pointed out to me. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZlAnkExQabY The ideas presented in the video seem to be correct and most interesting. Even more, it seems to me the opportunity of having all those XOs already distributed, we might have the perfect opportunity to apply these ideas. Of course, I am just a volunteer. I would really like to listen to the opinion of teachers, educators and other experts. Mi impression is that, as Mr. Toffler says, the problem he describes in the U.S., is not an exclusive problem of this country. We will see it in other countries as they go from industrial to digital societies. Tabla con Texto - Espanol Ingles - Con Instrucciones

English translation follows Spanish text Steve Thomas publicó ayer "Text Table", un proyecto para contestar la pregunta de Caryl Bigenho sobre cómo crear una tabla con columnas en Etoys. Los usuarios pueden entrar texto en las celdas. Lo encontramos sumamente interesante. . Siguiendo las instrucciones de Steve, volvimos a construir la tabla. Funciona muy bien. Para destacar su capacidad para manejar texto traducible, pusimos los títulos tanto en Español como en Inglés. Hasta los textos que agreguen los usuarios en las celdas, son traducibles. Escribimos instrucciones paso a paso tanto en Español como en Inglés y creamos un nuevo proyecto Etoys. Está adjunto al final de este mensaje. Lo llamamos "Tabla con Texto". No pudimos publicarlo en la Vitrina de Squeakland. English translation Steve Thomas published yesterday "Text Table", a project to answer Caryl Bigenho´s question about how to create a table with columns in Etoys. Users may enter text in its cells. We found it extremely interesting. Following Steve´s instructions we built the table again and, it works very well. To show off its ability to handle translatable text, we put the titles in both English and Spanish. Even the text added by the users in the cells is translatable. We wrote step by step instructions both in English and Spanish and created a new Etoys project. Please find it attached at the end of this message. We called it "Tabla con Texto". I'm able to access it. It's possible that it's intermittent. If you see the problem again, try again in a few minutes and see if it's there again. The server restarts itself automatically when there's a problem . . . if there's a persistent problem (likely due to memory settings that need tweaking) it may appear as if it's often down. Same goes for WebDAV, which was also working fine. FYI, sending to the Squeakland list should be sufficient. Rita and the rest can send a priority support notification (I got a text down in Haiti, FYI). Problem with Squeakland Showcase

Hi All...There is a broken page at the Squeakland site:http://www.squeakland.org/showcase/Currently it is not possible to access the "Showcase." It all comes up as an html script. Is there a back door?Any idea on when this will be fixed?Caryl

To import pictures into Etoys from Mac or PC: On Mac: - Drag image file from finder window into Etoys - Drag image from Safari browser into Etoys (other browsers May work) On PC: - Drag image file from Windows Explorer window (the one that shows the list of files) into Etoys - Drag from Internet Explorer into Etoys Images can be resized within Etoys. Simply get the halo and use the "Change Size" icon (yellow one in lower right corner of Halo). To keep the aspect ratio the same, hold down the <Shift> key while dragging. Regarding image "file size" you do not want to use large high resolution images as this will increase the size of the Etoys project (which for deployment to XO's can be problematic). One solution is to drag in the High Res Image, then 1. resize it to the size you want 2. Use the "Grab Patch" tool from the "Supplies Bin" to grab a copy of a screen section 3. Delete the original picture you imported and Empty the Trash. Video is a problem, right now Etoys only support MPEG (MPEG 1 and possibly 2 I think). There have been issues in trying to post and share projects with video. Students make little progress in intellectual growth in the first two years of college. Why is that? The Student as Profit Center Updated January 24, 2011, 11:38 PM Mark C. Taylor is chairman of the department of religion at Columbia University. He is the author of "Crisis on Campus: A Bold Plan for Reforming Our Colleges and Universities." A recent study concluding that the first two years of undergraduate education makes very little difference in students’ abilities to read critically and write clearly points to a troubling fact in higher education. We are not doing an adequate job of preparing students for life and work in the 21st century. There are many reasons for students’ difficulties. Far too many come to college today less well prepared than in the past and are not able to work at the level that should be required of them. It is essential to develop an approach to reform that integrates K-12 and college education. The challenges students face are compounded by pressures faculty members face. The imbalance between research and teaching has led to curricula that are over-specialized. Many of the courses offered are of little interest or use to students. When a person’s professional future depends on research and publication, there is very little incentive to spend time teaching and working with students. But even well intentioned teachers who would like to do more for their students often face insurmountable difficulties. Growing financial problems make it virtually impossible to provide the kind of education students deserve. While faculty members and graduate students are being cut, many schools are trying to increase income by admitting more students. When there is pressure to teach large classes to help the bottom line, the wisest policy is to assign little reading or writing. Teaching well takes lots of time and helping student to learn to read critically and write well cannot be done in lecture halls with hundreds of students. The situation is even worse than recent reports suggest. Students are going to need new skills and different literacies in the future. The technological revolution that continues to take place is transforming the very structure of knowledge and, by extension, is changing the way people think, read and write. Traditional skills and competence in reading and writing are still necessary but are no longer sufficient. We must also teach students to be as critical and creative in new media as they should be in the old. None of this will be easy or cheap but it must be done now. Debemos enseñar también a los estudiantes a ser tan críticos y creativos en los nuevos medios, como deben serlo en los tradicionales. Nada de esto será fácil o barato, pero debe hacerse ahora.
