Squeakfest Uruguay - Call for Papers

The official Squeakfest website is now live and ready for you to propose a presentation, workshop, or panel. http://squeakfest.org The dates for Squeakfest Uruguay in Montevideo are May 26, 27, 28. The theme for this year's conference will be "How and why to use Etoys in the education" Our overall goal is to show how teachers are using Etoys to teach their full curriculum. Whether language arts, math, science, or more, we hope to showcase the many ways Etoys can help teachers demonstrate abstract ideas easily. If you've got experience teaching with Etoys, we'd love to hear about it, as would the attendees of the conference. We're also very interested in non-classroom Etoys use, particularly as it relates to OLPC pilots. We'll be adding more information to the website as it becomes available, but for now, the important thing is to get your presentation information to us so we can begin to design the program for our three days together. Please complete and submit the online form no later than May, 14th, 2011. Please share this information with anyone you think would be interested in either Squeakfest conference. loading and image file and making vanish after a while

Hi all, I would like to create some kind of artistic project on Pharo/Squeak. The idea is to make some images appear and vanish slowly after a while. Browsing the net I have found this code on pharo to change the background: |form| form := (Form fromBinaryStream: (HTTPSocket httpGet: 'http://ubuntu.ecchi.ca/wallpapers/10.04/' , 'Maraetaibeforesunrise.jpg')). World backgroundImage: form layout: #scaled and I imagine that something similar is needed to load any image from Internet or hard disk changing the path and making it appear on the screen. I have tried this: x := ImageMorph new. x image: (Form fromFileNamed: '/home/offray/Temp/myFile.png'). x openInWorld. and is working, but I can get the halos on this image on pharo using Ctrl + Shif + Click on Pharo, but is not working. So I have 3 questions: 1. There is any way to get halos on the image by coding instead of clicking on it? 2. Can I use alpha channels to make the loaded image fade after a while once it appeared? 3. I'm using Pharo one click image. There is any way to use the local paths of the image to load some images and load some others from the Internet? The idea is to distribute the small artistic project in this way. This is trying to be a weekend newbie project, to show to my interactive art teacher, so any quick help would be really appreciated (first I was trying to get the idea, and the using Etoys, so now I'm on pharo, hoping to make this work easily). Introductory documentation for OSC in Squeak

Hi all, I'm using Physical Etoys in Squeak for Linux (0.7 version) for interact with an arduino board. Other people is using vvvv for their work with sensors. I would like to use OSC for enabling communication with them, but I can't find any newbie documentation on that subject, in fact, I only find on the web that OSC is supported by Squeak and is a nice protocol, even proudctos like Musical Objects that use it, but not many details. Any introductory information on Squeak and OSC will be appreciated and if I can get details on time to make proper communication, even better. What does "Order is not important" mean when find strings in the book object?

Hi all, When use the "find" feature in the book object, it shows with this help message: "words to search for. Order is not important. Beginnings of words are OK." Does "Order is not important" means that it can search for more than one word? But when I try to do that, it seems that only first word is used. Is this message incorrect or I'm missing something? And, "Beginnings of words are OK." is not quite right, as I can use it to find any part of a word (middle part or ends of words). Thanks, Xin Wang

Hi Offray, It is good to hear from you! Your question about images fading is beyond me but I have had some success using scale factor increase/decrease and show/hide to make an effect easier for me and my young students to do. Since your topic is art, may I mention a recent student project? My students looked at paintings by Miró and used Etoys to create new paintings, dynamic collages, puzzles, and games. Maybe the art teacher would like to see them. My students spent 4 or 5 class periods on the project starting with looking at about 100 paintings I cut from a book. They chose their favorite and decided what kind of Etoys project they would make. They have been smart using Etoys tools like copy and re-size, and objects and layers of objects to achieve Miró effects. It was a study in depth that they enjoyed and when you look at the whole collection you can see the influence of the artist. Hi, I don't know if Timothy is still working on this, but there are critical texts about Schools and its role in society. One of the seminal and more strong critics is from Ivan Illich and his "Sociedad Desescolarizada" (I have only read him in Spanish) and a more conciliatory view of classroom as simulations of communities of practice can be found in Gavriel Salomon's Distributed Cognitions. The advantage of the Communities of Practice point of view is that classroom can be simulations but they happen everywhere outside the classroom, as cooking in the Timothy's example. Teaching in digital society vs industrial society

I have just watched a most interesting video a friend pointed out to me. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZlAnkExQabY The ideas presented in the video seem to be correct and most interesting. Even more, it seems to me the opportunity of having all those XOs already distributed, we might have the perfect opportunity to apply these ideas. Of course, I am just a volunteer. I would really like to listen to the opinion of teachers, educators and other experts. Mi impression is that, as Mr. Toffler says, the problem he describes in the U.S., is not an exclusive problem of this country. We will see it in other countries as they go from industrial to digital societies. range of color values in color category in Viewer

Hi all, When translating strings of color category in Viewer. I found that range of color values (include red, green, blue and alpha value) showed in the bubble (0~1.0) is not consistent with the actual possible value (0~100)? So which one is correct? Thanks, Xin Wang
