Lack of documentation frustrating

Hi, I am volunteering at a local school, and will be doing squeakland once a week with some fifth graders. Squeakland (etoys?) seems ideal for these kids, except that I'm frustrated by the lack of documentation. I've spent ages looking through the website and searching online, and I can't really find the kinds of things I'm looking for. I went through some of the tutorials myself, and those will be great to get started, but I would like to give the kids fairly free reign, and be able to answer most of their questions. I tried to do some little projects myself, but I kept coming up with seemingly simple things I wanted to do, and not finding any obvious way to do them (or, as I say, any documentation suitable for answering the questions). For example: I wanted to make an etoy follow the mouse pointer around. I can't see any way of even obtaining a reference to a mouse object. I would also like to do loops and suchlike. Not obvious how to do that. I can see that if I can dive down into the smalltalk level, I could do it, but this seems like the kind of thing that's probably at the squeakland (etoy? What do I call the kids' environment?) level. But as I say, what I'm really looking for is not this particular fish, but how to fish for myself. I would buy a book, but the one pointed at from the website appears to just be a set of projects, rather than the kind of documentation I'm looking for. Squeak: Learn Programming by Controlling Robots looks like it might be sort of what I'm looking for, although I'm interested in a broader range of Squeakland projects than just the turtle graphics mentioned in the summary of the book. So: where is the documentation it seems ought to be there? Thanks.

Strange error when loading a project into another from a superwiki then saving the image

I have found this strange error, with squeakland (with up to date update) If I load a project from a superwiki, then I save the image I got an error and the image is not saved. It is a primitive error, and it is looking like Squeak try to create a /home directory (which it is not authorized to) If then, I reload the project from the downloaded project in the squeaklet directory, then I can save just fine the image. Doing a presentation of Squeak with Squeak as a presentation tool

For an event about ICT and education, I was asked to present Squeak usage in education (http://www.28mars.org). It seems interesting to use Squeak to present itself. The thread navigator seems to be the appropriate tool to do so. I am wondering two things: - How is it possible to create a template slide/project then duplicate it to create additional slides? At worst the template can be save in a project file then reload each time an additional slide is needed. - More important, to illustrate with real contents, I need to add in some of my slides third party squeak-projects (ie project created by kids and teachers). Is it possible to merge two different projects? I would like the third party project to be part of the slide, and not just a small windows I can jump into. Thanks. Hilaire

I have done squeak presentations by using the book morph and creating a template by creating a page and selecting from the red menu halo on the book -> save as new page prototype. The next page you create will have the same elements as the one you saved as a prototype. Squeaking Physics

Hello Squeakers, I have been using Squeak for about a year now with my physics classes. We are currently engaged in a project unit with the common thread being simple harmonic motion. We started with a mass on a spring system. (See attached.) Our next activity involves making a simple three string bleach bottle banjo with a simple electric pickup system. Finally we will be making a simple LC circuit filter to remove some of the signal transduced by the pickup system. We have been attempting to model all of our exploits in Squeak. Does anyone have a suggestion of how to model a sound generated by tightening or loosening a banjo string so that the sound produced is over a continuous range of frequency? File server or other shared save situation for lab?

I posted about this recently, but didn't even see the message come through, let alone a reply. Weird. I do a weekly lab with some 8-10 year olds. They share laptops, so we really need a way for them to save what they are doing to a file server or something similar. But I can't make it work. (We're on Windows XP). Tried putting a shortcut to the file server inside the squeak folder, but there wasn't any way to select it. Any advice?

Hello everyone, Our deadline for announcing your candidacy to the Squeak Foundation Board has passed, which means we have a final list of 12 candidates.
