Please help us test "Squeakland05"

Dear Squeaklanders -- Greetings. We've been working hard to ready an updated and improved "Squeakland image" intended to be the standard base for us to use in the 2005-06 school year. It is important that it be well-tested before putting it up on the Squeakland website, so that schools can install for the new year, etc. So, we are now asking you to help us with that testing now and throughout SqueakFest. The new image can be downloaded from one of these sites: http://squeak.hpl.hp.com/~andreas/Squeakland05.zip http://www.impara.de/~andreas/Squeakland05.zip http://squeakalpha.org/squeakland05/Squeakland05.zip Installation instructions: * Navigate to the Squeakland installation directory: [Win:] C:\Program Files\Squeak\Plugin [Mac:] After unzipping the compressed file, a "Squeakland05.image" Squeak icon will appear on your desktop (it will *not* replace your current Squeak icon). Double-click on it to launch. * Rename the existing SqueakPlugin.image into SqueakPlugin05.image * Extract Squeakland05.image and rename it to SqueakPlugin.image When you open the new image you will see "- Squeakland05 - This is a test version." in the center of the screen. If you so not see this, you have not launched the new image. There is not a lot visibly different in this image from last school year's version. It has had some bugs fixed, and is now based on the 3.8 "squeak.org" image used by developers, programmers, etc. We like keeping these versions as compatible as possible. Much of the new code helps with mutiple languages within Squeak and compatibility with Squeaks in other countries (Japan, Spain, etc.) What is most important is that you load *your* projects into this image to make sure they load properly. Please also create, play, publish, etc. to test it out. We want to use the next 2 weeks for testing and feedback. We will make fixes/adjustments if necessary and then "freeze" it and post to Squeakland immediately following SqueakFest (by August 15) to ensure the posting of a stable version for installation for the '05/06 school year. Please please report any problems and if do you, be sure to tell us which platform you use, which OS, browser version, and include any 'broken project', screen shot of error message, etc. The more info you send us the easier it is to try to determine the problem. Pausing animation?

I can't find a way to insert a pause in an animation. My students want to slow down their animations. I taught Microworlds last year, and in that language, you inserted a pause of x seconds in the script to slow down the motion. Is there a way to do this in Squeak? 'turn toward' behavior

I just discovered that the 'turn toward' tile only works as expected if the 2 objects in question (e.g., a turn towards b) do not overlap. This seems like a bug to me since, I believe, the 'turn towards' operates on the centers (rotation centers), i.e. single points, of the objects in question and, hence, may have nothing whatsoever to do with the objects' pixels. --Randy

Hey Kim, I've never been to a Squeakfest event before. Tell me, would this be something that I could bring my 7 year old brother to? Would there be any activities that he could sit down and participate in, or is event geared towards educators on all levels? Thanks! -Wendell

Linking one object to another object

Not sure if this his where to post questions, so here it goes. I just subscribed: I am working on the 'Car Tutorial' from the squeakland web site. I created the car: it move forward and turns etc. I created a steering wheel, however I can't remember how to link it to the car, to make the steering control the car. Is there more of a descripition information on this? Step-by-step? upload to ftp server

Hi, for all added ftp-servers to my filelist (open filelist -> add server...), there are automatically generated html-pages, when i save my project there. That's fine! but does'nt work ;-( 1. The given URL for pluginspage ist wrong: http://www.squeakland.org/plugin/detect/detectinstaller.html 2. The src have to be complete, full path Example for generated site: (look at the source code) http://www.relearn.de/squeak/Aliens.html Yes, I know, I should use the pluginloader at squeakland. But since the functionality is integrated in Squeak: How and where can I fix the problems? (add the full path and correct URL) Christian

Now I simply wonder when I would ever want to use the <obj> do > <script> tile. I've still got much to learn about Squeak... The difference is that if you drag the <script> tile, it gets executed in place, during the current tick. If you use "do <script>", then it gets scheduled to execute at the next tick. For most things, it may not matter, but if you're doing parallel reads, writes of a variable from different scripts, it can make a big difference. ... Lenny Pitt

Dear Squeaklanders, Greetings. We hope you're enjoying the summer months (or winter for those of you in the southern hemisphere). We're not only getting ready for SqueakFest in Chicago in a few weeks (there's still a little time left to register, please join us!) but we're making some changes to the Squeakland website which we believe will improve navigation and retrieval, add content and valuable information to help us all, and in the U.S., better prepare us to start off the next school year. To this end, we'd *love* to include a link to your project(s), classroom, school, or community center. Please share with us! Let us know more about your Squeak-related activities and local events. We'd love to include you on the website. We are looking to add more examples from learners of all ages -- elementary school through University and we'd love to highlight you, your community, and your projects. preserve trash - Space invaders

Hi, I adapted a project from Markus Gaelli, all things wrk fine, only eToys stadnards are used, no hacks... Only the trash makes trouble, it slows down the project after a while. Setting preferences to "preserve trash -> false" and "slideDismissalsToTrash -> false" will help. I set the preferences for this project to false, but it never happens to an eToys Standard installation. The reason: Preferences are appied to all projects, not to individual projects, what overwrites my settings. So here are my questions: 1) Is there any possibility to set this preferences on false and overwrite the defaults? Via script or so?? 2) Would be nice to have the option "apply to individual projects" for this settings per default in the Squeakland distro - is there a chance?
