Making Cultural simulations on Kedama

Hi all, First, thanks for the SqueakFest2006. It was really awesome to be here, to know all that squeakers, to listen them, and to speak with them (a little). If love is the key to make visitors become residents, thanks for such warm act of love in such nice city :) I'm now getting back to my academical activities and I'm wondering, after the speak of Yoshiki, if Kedama can be used to make cultural simulations also (may be you remember that I'm interested in the "Cultural Thing" of cognition also). I'm thinking to start with a specific simulations showed in the book The Complexity of Cooperation from Robert Axelrod. It's about culture dissemination. Axelrod model different cultures as part of a grid (that where the idea of using Kedama come from). Every culture is a cell in that grid and every culture has a number of traits (for example 5) wich can have different values (lets say 10). What Axelrod says is that when two agents (cultures) are similar one to each other (it' means they share the same value in the same trait) they have more possibilities to interact and become even more similar. The algorithm is something like this: Repeat these two steps as much as wanted: 1) Select randomly a culture in the grid and select randomly a neighbor of that culture (in such grid neighbors can be on north, south, west or est). 2) This two cultures interact with a probability equal to their cultural similarity (that is, the number of similar values in the same trait of these two cultures). That interaction consist in selecting a trait where this two cultures are different and change the value of that trait for the value of the neighbor. The process define a set of culture regions. OLPC eToys!

Hello, As you may know, the "eToys team" at Viewpoints Research is working on a version of Squeak tailored to suit the OLPC. (Please take a look at http://wiki.laptop.org/ and their wiki site from there.) Many of us have gathered together at the OLPC office in Cambridge, MA, for two weeks of intensive, quality hacking time. The plan is to finalize the image by the middle of October. We are making many UI changes and optimizations suitable for the relatively modest resource on the laptop. The effort includes performance tweaks, simplification of menus, reduction and reorganization of objects in the parts bins, and tweaks to both Viewers and Scriptors, including font, color, and size choices. At the same time, we are trying to minimize the changes so that we don't introduce new bugs, and in order to remain consistent with existing documentation. Running etoys on Intel-based Macs

Greetings, We've recently had a number of email messages regarding running/loading etoys on an Intel-based Mac. Here's a little info - You can do this now....just "get info" on Safari and select "Open using Rosetta". This will do the trick. In adddition, our colleague John McIntosh is building a "universal plug in" that will be usable by both PowerPC-based Macs and the new Intel-based Macs. John will have this ready by the end of October and we'll replace the current Macintosh PlugIn with this once fully tested. For those of you in schools we hope your year is off to a great start! Hi All, New to this list. I submitted the following email to squeak-dev. Anyone here answer these? ======================= a few questions on the squeakland browser plugin for unix, if someone in-the-know can answer: Is the squeakland image special? (different from the regular ol' squeak images?) Is the vm different too? Or is the only difference the npspeak.so file and the symbolic link it creates (e.g. create symbolic link `/usr/lib/firefox-1.5/plugins/npsqueak.so' to `/usr/lib/squeak/3.7-7/npsqueak.so') I'm afraid the squeakland vm will overwrite my current vm. Is that needless worrying? Most of the optimizations we are doing may not be really relevant on more than decent computers, and many UI design decisions are based on the particular screen, but sure, some stuff makes sense to be incorporated. One thing, though, that we haven't checked well the compatibility of existing projects. There would be good reasons not to merge some other changes. (Again, we haven't checked thoroughly, yet) -- Yoshiki

Mac OS X help

I installed the Squeak on a mac mini and while the program launches, the plugins dont seem to work in either firefox or safari. Any help would be apprecaited.

Hi Pierre-André Thank you for your response. That is useful to know. Apparently the option needs to be on sometimes and off sometimes. So it needs to stay separate from other options.
