Hi all, I've posted this to squeak-dev and on mantis (see below) but its clear if this preference has a champion (someone who is willing to defend it) they are probably on this list. So does anybody cherish this option? Can it be removed in the name of simplifing what has to be maintained? Reply here or squeak dev. changing publish to folder

Hi, First of all, I'd like to thank B.J. Allen-Conn & Kim Rose for their excellent book, "Using Squeak to Enhance Math and Science Learning". I've been using Squeak eToys (with the book) to teach children game authoring(ages 7 - 10). I've been doing these workshops both in Magdeburg,German and Tg. Malim, Malaysia. In the workshop, together with my friends, we worked with children of different ages and experiences, and Squeak was a good tool for them (who have no prior programming experience). It seems that the children were spending quite some times in the drawing parts, they keep on asking about the Undo. Even though the children have some experiences in using computer especially word processors or Web browser, they actually want the Undo capability (in Squeak eToys) to be given to them more than once. Is there any solutions or modification that will bring a new 'children-friendly' interface for the next Squeak eToys generations? Is this going to be an Etoy project or a Smalltalk one? If Etoys, then you might want to look at the examples at squeakland.org, and also subscribe to that mailing list, which is specifically aimed at using Squeak in education. Specifically, the "Stair" example from http://squeakland.org/kids/sqfest_2004.htm could give a hint how to move a lemming. Instead of erasing, you might use a large pen to draw in the background color. To make the pen trails appear on top of the drawn landscape, you might put the lemmings in a transparent playfield. - Bert -
