duplicate (not sibling) - garbage collection?

Hi Scott, Recently you gave me a useful tip for creating duplicates (not siblings) from a textual script using "costume duplicate player". This has been working great except for one problem. As students are developing their scripts, their project files keep growing rapidly in size. We start off with a 'template' project that is about 300 kB. Each round of program development and debugging usually involves creating and destroying multiple 'duplicates' using the above method. Before long, the project files are many MB in size, even after all players have been cleared from the playfield and the trashcan has been emptied. Loading and saving project files gets slower and slower. I've discovered this happens even if the duplicates are created using the halo icon, rather than the textual script. Each duplicate that is ever created seems to leave a 'ghost' that take up about 130 kB of storage. In the process of debugging their scripts, students typically create and destroy dozens of 'duplicates', leading to multi-MB file sizes. This growth in file size seems to happen only with 'duplicates', not with 'siblings'. Is there some way to do garbage collection to get rid of these 'ghosts' so we can keep the file sizes manageable? A new series of thirty videos featuring Etoys will be made, along with our new textbook. The Haitian pilot will be the first to use the new courseware, teaching three hours each week for ten weeks. It's scheduled to end before June 1st. Hopefully the full courseware will be done by July 1st. If you have enjoyed our tutorials or movies, and believe in what we're doing, please consider donating on our website. We're running near the end of our budget and will likely have to cut corners on our upcoming full-length documentary and courseware. Bob's SuperSwiki still down. Anybody know why?

Qcake

Hello Squeakers, Has anyone tried out Qcake on the xo laptop? http://www.qcake.org/index1.htm It seems to be a much lighter install and processing load. I am still running Sugar. Should I switch to Ubuntu before trying to run Qcake? For those who never heard of Qcake. It is an open source creative 3d environment with built in physics engine and freely available object and sound libraries. Cheers, Eric Eisaman Guam

XO laptop: EToyChallenge Step 7

Dear all, I am not sure this is the right place to ask this question, but I hope to get the answer to this question from here. I purchased the XO laptop for my son. These days he tries to finish eToy Challenge that came with his XO laptop, but stuck at the Step 7. In this step, he is supposed to send the car to the goal using the given eToy blocks. I tried to help him myself, but could not figure it out. The problem was that the path is so curved that the car needs at least two "eyes" to detect where the car is going instead of one as is given in this Challenge. Could someone tell me how to solve this challenge? I want to give my son some hints. Thanks in advance. YJ

Gougu theorem, chinese did it as well...

Hello, Enclosed a snaphot of the Gougu puzzle to demonstrate the Pythagorean theorem. The construction is done with DrGeo, and the tiles of the puzzle are simulated with the translation transformation of polygons. A project file can be downloaded from our swiki at http://swiki.ofset.org:8000/super/320 However, your image need to be installed with DrGeo, in case of doubt you can just download a Squeakland image preloaded with DrGeo (See http://wiki.laptop.org/go/DrGeo).
