During a recent event organized in Montevideo by Plan Ceibal, we had a chance to listen, among many others to two speakers who, together, gave us the feeling they hold the key to success. One speaker explained how they are testing students in Uruguay. The other explained how, with the availability of good student testing methods and the availability of computers for each and all children, we could finally scale up to today's large numbers of students, the successful methods used centuries ago by artisans to teach their apprentices. In two weeks, two days, we'll spend two weeks, two days, starting new pilots: two in Cite Soleil, two in tent camps, one with a youth choir, all of them exciting. As usual, there's a half dozen snags. We don't yet have the laptops out of customs, which makes me nervous as hell, though our chief partner said, "It'll be fine, book your flights", so we did. Even if we get the laptops out of customs, we won't know how many of them work until just before the pilots. Even if all are working, we still won't have enough, which means we'll bring twenty ourselves. Our chief contact at JP/HRO resigned over the holiday break. We'll be talking with her replacement on Thursday, who seems equally enthusiastic, though major changes so close to a pilot start are always fun. Yesterday an impartial commission announced that Celestin (the unpopular candidate) was actually behind Martelly (the popular one). Preval and Celestin will react to the news after tomorrow's anniversary, which could spark a new round of rioting. We're also hoping the runoff election will be scheduled after our trip. Pretty much the only certain thing is that we're on a very, very tight budget. We can't rent a car, we can't travel to Léogâne, we can't do much more than walk back and forth to the school. Every dollar counts. But we're going. Our work paid off. How to pay the bills in March is another question. Forum Languages - Idiomas en los Foros

Traducción al Español sigue al texto en Inglés Bernie Innocenti, Walter Bender, thanks for you comments on a recent posting we wrote. You are bringing up many interesting subjects. I am following my first own suggestion: Posting the question in several forums in more than one language. Most of us probably had the experience, at the end of a successful meeting of a group, when someone asks if Tuesdays at 9 PM would be good for future meetings. If the question is asked at the end of a 9 PM meeting on a Tuesday, chances are most of those in attendance will agree it is the ideal time and day of the week. My other suggestion is you get comments from others younger than me; times have changed a lot. When I went to college in Uruguay, professors would recommend textbooks in English, French or Italian without any hesitation or changing the intonation of their speech. Sometimes, at most, they would mention the book or publication was available at the library but "it is in German" or "it is in Russian". We were expected to read and study in foreign languages without any complaining at all. At home, many of the textbooks that had been used in high school or college by my father, were in French. Most of the technical publications he received, were in English. Today, if anyone recommends an article in a foreign language the reaction is not good at all. There are some explanations for these changes, I believe. The number and quality of texts, books and other publications available in Spanish has increased tremendously. Internet allows to search and frequently find material in our own language. Photocopies became quite popular. If we are going to make and use a photocopy, why shouldn´t we use the best and most convenient original we can find? To give you a final simple personal opinion, yes, Walter, language might be and is a barrier. I made some attempts at translating forum discussions but found it to be close to impossible. One of the great features of forums is speed. Then, the only acceptable translation speed would be that of automatic translators. To get good results from automated translators you would have to demand good quality originals. This contradicts the way we write in forums, this is "as we talk". If someone wants to translate some text between Spanish and English, please ask, I would do my best but, cannot translate all the information exchanged in a forum. Para obtener buenos resultados con traductores automáticos, deberíamos entonces exigir originales de buena calidad. Esto contradice la forma como escribimos en los foros, que es "como hablamos". El mensaje es muy breve y creo se puede relatar así en Español, en forma abreviada y simplificada: Habla de dos niños jugando en el campo. Al ver un pájaro uno quiso impresionar al otro con su sabiduría. Le preguntó a su amigo que tipo de pájaro era el que tenían delante. El amigo contestó que no tenía la menor idea. El primero respondió recitando el nombre del tipo de pájaro que estaban viendo, en varios idiomas. Y agregó un comentario: "Se ve que tu padre no te enseña tan bien como me enseña el mío". El primero, sin irritarse ni sentirse menos, le contesta que su padre le enseña mucho más. Con todo lo que me dijiste, contesta, veo que tal vez sepas mucho sobre el nombre del pájaro en varios idiomas y los seres humanos que los hablan alrededor del mundo. Se dijo que muchos maestros no saben cómo enseñar a los niños a aprender. La maestra que hizo esta afirmación, escribe tan claro, correctamente, en idioma corriente y con explicaciones adicionales que no querría estar demasiado lejos de su nivel de claridad. Todavía estoy pensando mi respuesta. Soy más optimista. Pienso que hay muchísimos que sí saben enseñar, la mayoría, tal vez casi todos o todos. El problema es que todo lo que tienen a su alrededor, los lleva a enseñar de otra forma que no parece ser la correcta ni la mejor. Interesante, ella está en EEUU, tu estas en Ecuador y yo estoy en Uruguay. Parece que el tema va más allá de las fronteras. Yo pensaba en algún momento que era un problema local de Uruguay. En Uruguay oímos frecuentemente: "Este es un país muy tradicional y por lo tanto, es difícil introducir nuevas ideas o métodos". Saber y Aprender - Knowledge and Learning

English version follows the Spanish text Saber y Aprender El saber no ocupa lugar pero ... --- aprender toma mucho tiempo y esfuerzo. Una laptop cargada de cosas nuevas que nunca antes vimos, puede llegar a enloquecer o por lo menos a asustar a muchos de nosotros. ¿Qué hacer? Todo lo que oímos que estudian unos y otros, son temas interesantes. A nadie molestaría conocerlos y dominarlos todos. El saber no ocupa lugar. Pero al tratar de aprender todo y aprenderlo rápido muchos terminamos no aprendiendo nada. Aprender toma mucho tiempo y esfuerzo. Tratemos, entre todos, de encontrar una solución. ¿Qué necesitan saber los maestros, los alumnos, los familiares, los voluntarios? Por lo que vemos y oímos hay tres grupos importantes de conocimientos útiles relacionados con las laptops en la enseñanza: 1) Conocimientos necesarios para hacer que los alumnos aprendan. Esto es lo que aprenden los maestros durante su preparación profesional. Ahora necesitarán ajustar su enseñanza para aprovechar las laptops de que disponen los alumnos. Al hablar mucho de computadoras parece que frecuentemente nos olvidamos de este hecho obvio pero tan importante, es necesario saber enseñar. Los educadores son los expertos en enseñanza de que dispone la sociedad. Se prepararon durante toda una carrera profesional para dominar estos temas. 2) Conocimientos sobre computadoras y sus programas El conocimiento de lenguajes informáticos y la creación de programas son temas importantes. Ejemplo: Conocer Sugar y saber usarlo para crear nuevas aplicaciones. 3) El uso y aprovechamiento de aplicaciones creadas por otros. Ejemplo: Etoys y todas las aplicaciones pre-instaladas en las laptops escolares. Si deseamos ser útiles a la sociedad y a nosotros mismos, ¿cuánto necesitamos saber de los temas en cada grupo? El ideal sería que todos supiésemos todo. No necesitaríamos recibir ayuda de nadie. Pero lo mejor es el mejor enemigo de lo bueno. Fijémonos metas más alcanzables. Tratemos que cada uno de nosotros, haciendo lo que más le gusta o aquello para lo que siente tener más facilidad de aprender, podamos ser útiles lo antes posible. Un buen maestro, que sepa como entusiasmar a sus alumnos y que no tenga vergüenza en hacerse ayudar con lo que no sepa, puede ofrecer muchísimo. Puede beneficiar a sus alumnos, a la sociedad y a sí mismo en términos de satisfacción personal y profesional. Esto es cierto aún que sepa poco o nada sobre lenguajes informáticos, programación o las aplicaciones que se distribuyen con las computadoras escolares. Los entusiastas de Sugar y otros lenguajes pueden crear nuevas aplicaciones interesantes, sobre todo si trabajan en equipo con educadores. Pueden adaptar a condiciones locales aplicaciones creadas en otros países. Pueden también transmitir su vocación y entusiasmo a los más jóvenes. Todos esperan se necesiten muchos programadores en el mercado de trabajo que encontrarán los estudiantes de hoy. Sería ideal que todos fuésemos programadores expertos, nos entenderíamos mejor entre nosotros, pero la sociedad necesita también muchos otros trabajadores y especialistas en todos los campos. Un viejo jubilado que no tenga idea de cómo enseñar o de cómo crear nuevas aplicaciones, puede contribuir mucho estudiando y aprendiendo aplicaciones que ya existen, tales como Etoys. A laptop loaded with new things we never saw before, may scare us or even drive some of us crazy. ¿What to do? All we hear people study, are interesting subjects. Knowing and mastering them all wouldn´t hurt anyone. We don´t need room to accumulate knowledge. But many of us end up learning nothing while attempting to learn everything and learn it fast. Learning takes lots of time and effort. Lets try, all together, to find a solution. What do teachers, students, relatives and volunteers need to know? There are three important groups of useful subjects related to the laptops in schools. This is what we see and hear: 1) Knowledge needed to get students to learn This is what teachers learn during their professional studies and training. Now, they will have to fine-tune their teaching to take advantage of the laptops available to the students. When talking a lot about computers it seems we frequently forget this obvious but so important fact; it is necessary to know how to teach. Educators are the experts in teaching available to our society. They were trained during years at specialized teaching schools to master this subject. 2) Knowledge about computers and their programs Computer languages and writing programs are important subjects. Example: Knowing Sugar and knowing how to write new applications. 3) Using and taking advantage of applications written by others. Example: Etoys and all the applications that come pre-installed in the school laptops. If we wish to be useful to society and to ourselves, ¿how much do we need to know about the subjects in each group? The ideal would be for all of us to know everything. We would need no one to help us. But the best is the best enemy of the good. Let´s establish more reasonable goals for ourselves. Let´s try to have each one of us work on what we like most or on what we feel we can learn easier. This way we will be useful as soon as possible. A good teacher, who knows how to stimulate the students and who is not ashamed of asking for help with what he doesn't know, can be very useful. This teacher can benefit his students, society in general and himself in terms or personal and professional satisfaction, even if he knows little about computers, computer languages or even the applications in the school laptops. Sugar and other computer language enthusiasts may create interesting new applications, particularly if they work in teams with educators. They may adapt to local conditions applications created in other countries. They can also transmit their vocation and enthusiasm to younger generations. Everyone expects many programmers will be needed in the work market that today's students will enter. It would be ideal if we could all become expert programmers, we would understand each other better than we do today. But our society also needs many other workers and specialists in all fields. An old retiree with no idea about how to teach or about creating new applications, may contribute a lot by studying and learning existing applications such as Etoys. These retirees may publish their projects so teachers and students may see how they were created and learn when improving them and adding new features. I fully agree with your basic thoughts: ============================= You say, among other things: "I thought it would be a a good starting point for a good discussion about what could be improved in *our* camp. To begin with, I've always thought that there isn't nearly enough self-criticism in both Sugar Labs and OLPC." ============================= I recently read an article on the very popular, subject of the torrent of information coming our way and confusing us. The author said many of us enjoy forums and mailing lists as a solution to reduce the volume of information. Let´s spend time in the forums and lists we subscribe to and we will find most of the material is of interest to us. The author pointed out however a danger I never thought about. We suscribe to a list or forum because after reading the messages posted in them, we find out we like either the content or the authors because we generally agree with what they say. On the other hand, without much thought, we just discontinue our subscription if we come to realize the forum is not for us. The danger is we have thus isolated ourselves in the middle of the internet the most open media ever created. It is my humble opinion the Sugar-related lists should open up to everyone and try to help and give guidance specially to those who need it most who are the new ones in the lists. Among the new ones I would give special attention to those who are not computer geniuses, but who are basic players in the whole team. This change could be of enormous help to those already in the lists who enjoy talking to each other and frequently get upset with comments from outsiders. It seems to me the computer geniuses in the lists have forgotten they would be completely worthless if no one in the world used the programs and systems they produce. A good way of starting the year would be to review the whole field, remove the blinders on the sides of our eyes and look at everyone everywhere. Anyone planning to produce a product or service be it a loaf of bread, a computer program, a gun, or anything else, should at some point think who is going to use that product or service and what do they want to use it for. As they make progress, they should never lose sight of these end users and how they want to use the product or service. Listen to teachers, students, relatives in charge of those students, volunteers, everyone. Do not chase them away as ignorants because they do not understand your technical language. The most intelligent and educated individuals have the obligation of speaking in a language comprehensible to the ones they want to reach. With our best wishes to you, Bernie and to all! Por otra parte, sin pensarlo mucho, simplemente cancelamos nuestra suscripción si llegamos a la conclusión de que el foro no es para nosotros. El peligro es que nos hemos aislado, nosotros mismos, en medio de internet, el medio más abierto jamás creado. Mi humilde opinión es que las listas relacionadas con Sugar deberían abrirse a todos y tratar de ayudar y guiar específicamente a aquellos que necesitan más ayuda, los "nuevos" en las listas. Entre los "nuevos" habría que prestar atención especial a aquellos que no son genios de la informática, pero que son jugadores básicos en el cuadro total. Este cambio sería de enorme ayuda a aquellos que ya participan en las listas disfrutando de hablar entre ellos y que frecuentemente se molestan con comentarios de los de afuera. Me da la impresión de que los genios de la informática en las listas, se olvidaron de que serían completamente inútiles si nadie en el mundo usara los programas y sistemas que ellos crean. Una buena manera de comenzar el año nuevo sería mirar el panorama completo, removiéndonos las anteojeras a los costados de nuestros ojos, y mirar a todos en todo el mundo. Cualquiera que planee producir un producto o servicio, sea panes, programas de computadoras, armas o cualquier cosa, debería en algún punto pensar quién usará ese producto o servicio y para qué desea usarlo. A medida que progresan, nunca deberán perder de vista ni a estos usuarios finales ni para qué desean usar estos productos y servicios. Escuchen a los maestros, estudiantes, familiares a cargo de los estudiantes, voluntarios, a todos. No los corran por ignorantes porque no entienden el idioma técnico de ustedes. Los individuos más inteligentes y preparados tienen la obligación de hablar con un lenguaje comprensible por parte de los que desean alcanzar.
