Greetings, On behalf of Viewpoints Research Institute, Columbia College Chicago, and our gracious supporters, we are delighted to make this initial announcement for SqueakFest '06. Please plan to return (or join us for the first time) to the great city of Chicago to participate in SqueakFest from July 19-21st. (Sessions will begin the morning of the 19th.) We've arranged for this year's SqueakFest to be held in late July in consideration of previous feedback and "back to school" dates and schedules. We hope this will allow for a greater number of our community to gather in person this summer. We'll be sending more details and soliciting presentations, workshop leaders, panel ideas, etc. soon. For now, we hope you will mark your calendars and think about prelminary plans to come to Chicago this summer. ricochet off border

I think there's a simple way to have a sketch ricochet (instead of just bounce) off the border of a playfield, but can't seem to find it now... please help. --Randy

Hi, Sholom, Unfortunately, you can't use cut-and-paste to import external graphics into Squeak. To bring a picture into Squeak, you need to have it in a *file*, not just on the clipboard. So if you have a picture on the Clipboard and you want to import it into Squeak, you'll first need to go through the intermediate step (outside of Squeak) of creating a file to hold the picture. [On the Mac, for example, you could start up the Preview application, choose "New from Clipboard" to import the picture into a Preview document, then use "Save" to save the resulting document into a disk file.] There are several ways of importing a file-based graphic into Squeak, of which perhaps the two easiest are: (1) In the Finder, use drag-and-drop to "drop" the file onto a running Squeak; you'll see desired picture appear as a new SketchMorph within the Squeak window. (2) Alternatively, from within Squeak, open the golden Navigator, and hold the mouse down on the "Find" button until a menu appears. Choose "find any file" from this menu. In the ensuing blue file-chooser, choose the desired file, and hit the "Open" button to bring it into Squeak. pasting new morph

I'm trying to remember how images are brought into Squeak as new morphs. If I copy an image from some source, and then bring up the desktop menu, there's a 'new morph' choice. However, selecting 'paste from buffer' only works if the image has been cut from Squeak itself. What am I missing? Sholom Eisenstat

feature request: rotation center help

Might it be possible someday to add a line to the balloon help for a sketch's rotation center to "press Shift to move" -- assuming this action is required across operating systems. Not having this causes some frustration in workshops. --Randy

randy, I had done a sun earth moon system once and found that one could set the rotation center fairly easily (I think one of the halo menu choices maybe, also there I think you can tell it to display the rotation center and the forward vector which can help visualize things). I had used the embedding as described below, but found that if I simply embedded earth in sun the earth would be 'unselectable' when it did not overlap with the sun - which made it awkward if you wanted to go back and add the moon later. colliding balls

During my presentation last week, a teacher asked me about the possibility of using Squeak to simulate colliding balls (e.g. gas molecules). I came up with this simple project: http://poincare.uits.iupui.edu/~heiland/squeak/collide/ and would like feedback on the "best" way to do collision detection - for siblings, in this case. The little 2-ball simulation I show in this proj result in a springy/sticky action as they collide (due to the test and the forward by amount, I guess. Is there a better test to use than "overlaps any", or better logic? Also, I captured the screen image before saving the project. After I saved the proj, all "Sketch" tiles in the scripts were changed to "Sketch1". I think I've had this happen before, reported it, and had Scott reply, but I'm too lazy to go try to find it right now :) Maybe it happened due to the fact that I had assignment stmts for both Sketch and Sketch1 in the 'reset' script?? --Randy

sun-earth-moon

Is it possible to squeak planetary motion? Obviously, you can rotate the earth about the sun by repositioning the earth's rotation center to the center of the sun, but what about moving the moon about the (rotating) earth? If a sketch's rotation center had its x,y location exposed as tiles then there could possibly be an elegant solution, but otherwise...? While conducting another workshop with the Girl Scouts last night, Charlie, my co-worker, came up with another scheme which I liked, to approximate circular motion. It consisted of: earth turn toward sun earth turn by 90 forward I liked this idea of a simple "tangent" and, if it worked as hoped, you could extend it to the moon-earth too. However, we see that it's not exactly an "instantaneous tangent" :) http://poincare.uits.iupui.edu/~heiland/squeak/planets Ideas?
