Problem with scope of objects

Hi, I am german cs student getting more and more amazed about squeak. Tonight I began to play around a bit and wanted to do that amazing "draw and steer your car" thing :) I used this tutorial to get started: http://www.dmu.com/squeak/sq0.html Well, unfortunately i could not figure out this simple thing in 3 hours. My problem is, after having added the car "Speedy" to the world, I cannot reference to it from any other script. If I add a steerwheel to the world, and want attach a script to it, squeak is not able to resolve that reference. It will tell me that "Speedy" is undefined and ask me if I would like to declare it global or create it. I had this problem with all kinds of things; text fields, button etc. I could not manage to get the "Hello World", from the tutorial running (http://www.dmu.com/squeak/sq1.html). Did I get something wrong ? So before I loose interest I rather ask. I am puzzled because I did it exactly the way described in the tutorial. Thank you a lot! I would be very disappointed, even appalled, to see my name as a hero here. The notion of a "Hero" seems to be partly built into human nervous systems and is a favorite trope in stories. This idea seriously distorted and masked how Xerox PARC actually worked, for example. OLPC has been making progress because quite a few talented people decided to take responsibility for different needs of the project. I am very proud of the Viewpoints researchers who really got behind this because they believed in it. So there are a lot of heros, if that is the word. I think of it more as "there are a lot of enlightened people" and it bodes well for humanity when they decide to take action. Cheers. How to invoke world menu in the OLPC image

Hello, Can anyone explain how to invoke World menu in the OLPC image? In the squeakland image, I can get the World menu with "ESC" key, but it did not work with the OLPC image. Thanks in advance. Young-Jin

Hi gang, I'll be giving a talk in a few days about some Python-related tools we've been developing and I thought I'd make a plug for the OLPC project as I see it will come bundled with Python 2.5. Out of curiosity, what other languages will it come bundled with? I believe I saw javascript somewhere, what about C, Java, others? Some version of Squeak obviously. thanks, Randy

"add a parameter" script feature in etoys

I can't assign a variable to the "add a parameter" feature available through the scripts menu in etoys. The parameter type is displayed and the type can be altered but it doesn't go green when I try to replace it with a variable of the right type. I can drag off a tile for the parameter type but that doesn't seem to help. (it seems the same in the OLPC version too) Can anyone point me to an online project that utilises add a parameter? I'm trying to make a fractal tree in etoys but need two parameters. Is it possible? -- Bill Kerr http://billkerr2.blogspot.com/

I had successfully dragged the tile var1 onto move forward 5 to turn it into move forward var1. I then looked for a way to turn it back to move forward 5. I guessed I was looking for a "constant" tile but couldn't find or create one. My concern is less about what the solution to my problem is but rather why finding the solution was not intuitive. I have taught kids aged 10-14 with another drag&drop programming language, Game Maker, and they only need 1/2 hour of instruction and they are teaching themselves the programming environment and have made a Pacman style game in 2 hours. This was my third attempt with Etoys, two previous 1 hour sessions had been unproductive, my most recent session was three hours and at the end I still hadn't been able to drive and steer my car with the cursor keys. I had been able to make it move on any key and could steer and move by clicking on other rectangles, but 5 hours in and I still can't make a rudimentary game. I could not find a help system. The context sensitive bubbles are good for identifying what a feature does but are no use in the reverse direction, when you know what you want to do and are looking for the thing that does it. Nevertheless a help system is not much use to 10-14 year olds, they almost never read the help, it would have helped me though! My question is, why aren't the solutions to my and Bill's questions intuitive enough for a 10-14 year old to solve if they can be made intuitive in other drag&drop environments? Tony
