An opportunity to promote Squeak in Singapore

Hi. I have been trying to find an avenue to help promote programming using Squeak in Singapore and I think I now have an opportunity to do so. I am part of the Singapore IT Standards Committee (www.itsc.org.sg) which is the national body that looks are IT standards for the country. Last year, we hosted the ISO SC 22 (programming languages) committee meeting in Singapore as part of that we ran a 24-hour programming contest. It was a great success and we have decided to run it again this year. For 2008, we have added a category solely targeted at the 12 and under age group and I am very keen on introducing Squeak into the picture. The other proposal we have is Alice. I am looking for advise/help in the following areas: a) a master trainer to train-the-trainer on Squeak. I have not spent enough time with Squeak to be a master and would love to get some instructor-led (perhaps over the web) learning if that is what it would take. b) suggestions on what kinds of contest we can run? This would include topics and problems to solve within a reasonable (3-4 hour) session especially after the participants have been given some training. We are looking at running the contest during the June timeframe which is the school holidays period in Singapore. Looking forward to suggestions. A friend of me is asking for a reliable way to use DrGeoII in a Squeak image. The ability to load/publish .pr with drgeo canvas from a web plugin will be important as well. It is not clear what is better. I want to prepare a bundle for that, but I am not sure if I should use Squeakland or OLPC Etoys. Or is it possible to prepare a DrGeoII .pr file directly loadable in a standards Squeakland image. It may be the more convenient solution. Hilaire

How to jump from a project to another not yet loaded?

I teach future primary teachers to use Squeak etoys. One of my pupils asked me how we could load a project from another. I'll explain. She was a little project where students must choose a item and, according the choice a new project, previous published, will load. Unfortunately I can't solve this!. I'm not a programmer, just a newbie squeak user. Can anyone help? Squeak Board Member Responsibilities (was: [Newbies] Squeak Foundation Election 2008 coming up!)

Hi Richard, I'd be happy to summarize the responsibilities of the Squeak Foundation board members. The board members are elected by the community to help the community address issues. The issues depend on what the community wants done but more specifically what the elected board members are capable of accomplishing, given their abilities some but mostly because of limited time to devote to projects. There are no requirements for any activity or participation, nor are there currently any ways to remove board members, or even to replace board members that resign. We elect new members yearly. We are in the process of making a legal entity for the board. When that happens, the board will be bound by more formal rules relating to not-for-profit entities. But the ultimate responsibilities for that will be the Software Freedom Foundation Conservancy who will have the ultimate say, which protects board members. At that time I believe we do have a way to replace board members that resign. We are also in the process of re-licensing Squeak, with the help of Viewpoints Research Institute www.vpri.org . The board and the community are participating in that to help accomplish this task. If you received an agreement from VPRI and haven't sent it in please take a moment and do it!! We are also in the process of figuring out if a Technical Board should be formed that would have more responsibilities to lead the development of Squeak and be the final arbitrator of where we go technically, but this was only suggested by some current board members but hasn't happened yet. The current board meets on a monthly basis by IRC (so no travel required). They communicate also by a private email list. There was talk about allowing prior board members continued access to that list with no voting rights for advice (a board member emeritus status), but I'm not sure if that suggestion was ever followed up on. The previous board would post the notes of the meetings. This one did not or did not do it very often. There are some other responsibilities to keep the community running, servers, administrators, fund raising, groups responsible for code like network, VM, kernel ... and a number of volunteers that help keep things going. Those groups are semi-autonomous, because they are volunteers and because many of those groups existed before there was a board. I would think that they would consult with and heed the advice of the board if something warranted it. Mostly they keep going because they kept going in the past and because of some very talented, hard working and dedicated individuals. Now some disclaimers; I am not a lawyer, nor am I a board member, so take all this with a gain of salt. If I misstated anything I'm sure others will correct me, and if I left anything out please feel free to add to this summary of responsibilities. I just did this off the top of my head. Etoys - create duplicate (not sibling) from a script?

Hi, >From an Etoys SCRIPT, how can I create a 'duplicate' of a player (equivalent to clicking on the green halo icon), rather than creating a 'sibling/clone' of a player (equivalent to SHIFT-clicking on the green halo icon)? The 'copy' tile available under the miscellaneous category seems to create a clone; the textual equivalent of ''Playfield include Ellipse's copy' is 'self include: Ellipse getNewClone'. What I need is the textual equivalent that would create a 'duplicate' rather than a 'clone'. [Why do I care? In the course that I'm currently teaching, we've created a 'robot' with embedded 'sensors' (the 'robots' and 'sensors' are created from individual Ellipse morphs; the sensors then get embedded in the robot). The robot's actions depend on differences between left and right sensor values. If I now make a 'duplicate' of the robot using the green halo icon, the new robot works as expected. However, if I make a 'clone' of the robot (either by SHIFT-clicking the green halo icon, or by using the 'copy' tile in a script, the new robot seems to pick up the sensor values from the original robot, rather than from its own sensors.] Thanks in advance, --Mark Nelson
