Thanks Darius. Yes, if that artifact wasn't present, this would indeed be a nice solution for making a scrollable tile-script. --Randy

Randy,
I've put a script in a GeeMail box and it seems to scroll tile-script satisfactorily in eToys while running. There is one artifact when dragging & dropping tiles onto a GeeMail embedded tile-script. The artifact is that copy of the image of the tile is put on the left side of the desktop. It's nice to have the development environment the same as the graphical environment.
Tweak 1.0 has as Scrollpane Widget but I've not been able to put a tile-script into it yet.
Cheers, Darius

Hi Alan, I'm not sure whether to read into that that the UI will remain unchanged in Tweak-etoys or not. Anyway, I appreciate the "invitation" for feedback
:)
One UI issue that seems to crop up for me fairly often is a tile-script becoming unwieldy - in length. Now this may be because I'm stretching
the
limits of how etoys should be used. But it seems a nice feature would
be
to have an optional scrollbar on a tile-script (just as is present on the textual code version of the script). Similarly, the option of having a scrollbar on the 'scripts' and 'variables' categories would be nice.
I'd also like to use etoys to teach some fun graphics apps that use
simple
math. However, writing something like: a*x + b*y becomes fairly cumbersome in etoys. For starters, there is no notion of operator hierarchy, nor any parens for grouping - unless I'm mistaken.
Just some thoughts, Randy

Suggestions for better UI would be most welcome.

teaching children, I don't really care what graphics engine drives

Tweak is the next version of etoys, and will have considerably more
range
of users and use. We have been working on this for the last several
years.

I have been travelling a lot for the last few weeks and am not up
to
date
with the recent developments on this forum, so please pardon my ignorance: what is Tweak?

That's a cute hack.

This works just as well. Grab a scroll pane put the scriptor on top, go to the red halo menu and "embed into" "ScrollPane's holder". But I think we can simplify this a little ;-)

My head's spinning, so would someone please enlighten me. Is there a publicly-available etoys-Tweak project (i.e, has the etoys-Squeak UI) out there for download somewhere? Is Tweak synonymous with the Croquet project?
Thanks, Randy

Yes, this exists but before I tell you where to go, read the disclaimer: This stuff is being actively developed and therefore many things aren't done yet, broken, or only halfways finished. If you expect to see something that even "mostly" works, you're better off waiting a little. I've put up (some rather small) screenshots at:
if you just want to get the idea of what the interface looks like for now. That said, here are your installation instructions: * Go to tweak.impara.de * Download Tweak-3.8-6665.zip (from the download section) * Start it * Using the button on the desktop open a "Tweak project window" * Go to the '?' menu, and "Load updates" This will take quite a while and might raise a few notifiers. Don't worry, all will be well. * When finished, close the Tweak project window and get a new one (the old one is slightly damaged after the updates)
You're ready to go. To play with it: * Go to Tools and choose "Painting" (first entry) to draw an object * Use the halo just as you would normally. * To load/save projects use the menu [*]
[*] Another disclaimer: Projects which you create with this version will NOT load into final version. We will not support migration of projects that have been created during interim stages of development.
I had been playing with the powerful ideas book - example projects from the first sections can be found here:

Is Tweak synonymous with the Croquet project?
No. Tweak is but one part of Croquet.
