Carlos, Thanks for your nice comments about the guides and EtoysIllinois! I am glad to know we are helping.
Let's check with Bert on whether there is time to add translations to the new release. The original guides have been translated into five languages; Sdenka Pilco did the Spanish. None of the 30 new guides have been translated into any language. I don't know yet which guides will be selected for the new version of Etoys.
Rita provided these instructions for translators: http://wiki.squeakland.org/display/sq/How+to+translate+the+Quick+Guides
If you would like to collaborate . . . you translate the text in the projects and then send them to me. I will do the rest of Rita's How-to list e.g. replacing scripts, images, and aligning things so they look similar from one language to another.
BTW: I enjoyed meeting Mariana Herrera at Squeakfest in Wilmington. Her presentation was excellent! Regards, Kathleen

Kathleen,
Thank you all for preparing the guides.
Ted
Thank you for bringing them to us all together in this impressive lists.
When we had Squeakfest in Brazil last year, I heard many teachers from Uruguay talking about "Illinois".
The work of Kathleen and her colleagues frequently was the first point of contact between Etoys and the teachers.
The presentation is exactly what we should always be preaching:
Made with Etoys in a format completely compatible with the XOs.
Kathleen,
I know some of this material has already been translated to Spanish.
What is the status?
I had promised to translate the Etoys Manual as soon as it is ready.
But maybe I should start translating whatever is not in Spanish yet from your guides.
Interesting, how different we all are.
As a senior citizen with engineering background, the idea of a formal manual was very much appealing to me.
But, as we were recently discussing with some of you, our main target should be teachers, they are the ones with the most power to take full advantage of our efforts.
It seems Kathleen´s guides are probably more appealing than formal manuals to the teachers using Etoys.
Please let me know where to point my efforts.

Kathleen,
I don´t want to interfere with what Sdenka is doing or will do, there is more than enough work for everyone who wants to help.
If there are any specific translations that are needed and Sdenka is not doing, will be glad to try to help.
I have not studied Rita´s instructions to translators that you just sent but, they seem to be something very similar to what I already used when translating the Etoys pages, I guess I could do it again.

Carlos, I have not heard from Sdenka about translating the new guides. I do not know if she reads the Squeakland lists and knows about the new guides. My best guess is that it will not interfere with her plans but rather will be welcome help. Regards, Kathleen

Folks, Here is what Bert and I are going to do. The QuickGuides for the new release will be the old QuickGuides plus the "Basic Guides" from Kathleen plus MenuMakeNewFlap that Steve Thomas wanted (I agree). I'll let Bert reply on how much time you have to make translations.

I renamed two guides: MenuBringtoFront -> MenuBring-toFront NavigatorBarHideShow -> NavBarHideShow
About MenuMakeNewFlap1 - why the 1 at the end? And why does it not recommend the view-source key (alt-comma)? Alt-shift-w is an obscure shortcut for a good reason.
There are more guides ending in 1: ObjectCatPolygon1 ScriptTileOverlapsDot1 ScriptTileTwoColorTest1
HaloActiveHandles and MenuTicksPerSecond - mentioned in Ted's mail but I do not have them
The English index project is broken. I used the old one, did not try to fix it.
Same for the Spanish one, I had to fix it it. It had a duplicated "layer" of buttons on top ... strange. The Italian index had a screenshot of the buttons on top, too.

End of August will still be fine.
What I need for each translation is a file mapping file names to titles. It also gives translations for the category titles. We can only use ASCII for the file names, but this file lets us use Unicode for titles. E.g. in German there are accented characters in the title but not the file names.
I made preliminary index files on my own:
Spanish http://etoys.squeak.org/svn/trunk/QuickGuides-Projects/es/index.txt Portuguese http://etoys.squeak.org/svn/trunk/QuickGuides-Projects/pt/index.txt Italian http://etoys.squeak.org/svn/trunk/QuickGuides-Projects/it/index.txt German http://etoys.squeak.org/svn/trunk/QuickGuides-Projects/de/index.txt French http://etoys.squeak.org/svn/trunk/QuickGuides-Projects/fr/index.txt
Someone should edit these. Left of the vertical bar "|" is the filename, right of it the translation. Also, it gives the order of the guides in the category so you might want to adjust this.
There is no French index project yet so I had to use the English one. And there are many guides still missing.
