Howdy,
I tried to install the Squeak plugin for Windows XP. It does not work.
I tried IE 6.0, Mozilla 1.6 and Firefox 0.8. It looks like they all have the same problem.
I run any of the examples and get
"An error has occured: you should probably just hit 'abandon'. Sorry!
with the message "Error: My subclass should have overridden one of my messages."
I hit Store Error Report but did not find a file named 'SqueakDebug.log'.
I hit debug and do not have a clue ;-)
I think it was looking for a place to put some files FileDirectory ???
I also installed Squeak and that works.
Suggestions?
Gary

I hit Store Error Report but did not find a file named 'SqueakDebug.log'.
Please try searching for "SqueakDebug*.log".
The logs should be in c:\program files\squeak\plugin or in c:\My Squeak<your user name>.
Thank you!

Any on http://www.squeakland.org/kids/kidshome.html and the one on this page http://squeakland.org/welcome.html and here http://squeakland.org/author/etoys.html
I can download the project and get them to run in the standalone squeak.
Here is a screen shot of the error http://www.jsoft.com/tmp/squeakErr1.png

I did not get a SqueakDebug*.log anywhere. I looked in C:\Program Files\squeak\plugin and did not see an error log.
I created c:\My Squeak<your user name> and the first example I tried now works. I'll try some more and get back to the list.
Thanks,
Gary

This is the Squeak Debugger, something you should not see if everything works as intended ;-)
But it will help in narrowing the cause for this bug. Could you please select the line that reads "DosFileDirectory(FileDirectory)>>assureExistance", then select "self" in the lower left pane, and tell us what directory's existence it tries to make sure?
I did not get a SqueakDebug*.log anywhere. I looked in C:\Program Files\squeak\plugin and did not see an error log.
Is it possible that "C:\Program Files\Squeak\Plugin" is not writable? The plugin tries to create a subdirectory there (I suspect this is causing the error). Also, debug logs would be written there if it was writable.
Michael: Perhaps nowadays we should not write in the "Program Files" directory, but rather in "My Files"?

It's looking for c:\My Squeak<your user name> as Michael mentioned.

I would rather have things in D:\tools\squeak. That's where I put the standalone and I would like to have the plugin under that location also.
I'm still looking around but adding c:\My Squeak<your user name> seems to have got me going with the plugin. Now to teach myself Smalltalk and how to use Squeak!!!
Thanks,
Gary

Hi Gary, The debug log should appear in c:\My Squeak<your user name> or simply c:\My Squeak. Most everything the Squeakland version of Squeak writes is written to that directory.
Best,
John

The installer did not create the C:\My Squeak directory on the two Windows XP systems I tried installing onto. It's working now that I created a C:\My Squeak<user> by hand. I'll try a few more installs this afternoon and see what happens.
Thanks,
Gary

However, note that:
* there is no guarantee that c:\ is actually writable (and hence that "c:\My Squeak" could be created) by the current user. In fact, chances are good that (for instance) school machines will be set up in this way.
* current Windows policy frowns on sticking user files under the root of volumes or under system directories or the "Program Files" path
* it would seem to make more sense to put the "My Squeak" directory somewhere under the current user's "My Documents" path; this way, a networked setup would work right. Otherwise, all the users of a given machine would be using the same "My Squeak" directory.

Yes, I've been thinking about that too. The original motivation of using c:\My Squeak was that some older Windows Version (Win95?) didn't necessarily have the My Documents folder hierarchy yet.

I would prefer to install in a directory I choose (eg. d:\tools\squeak) with the default being the user's My Documents.
