XP, Smartboard, and Squeak?

I realize this may be out of left field, but has anyone ever tried the above configuration? We are getting smartboards in all the classrooms next year, and I am experimenting with one now. I think the tactileness (tactility?) of the Smartboard and Squeak are a winning combination, but I can't figure out how to get the halo of an object, since I can't ALT-Click onscreen. I've tried using the ALT key on the Smartboard onscreen keyboard, but no go. If no one has done this, are there any developer types with a suggestion for a hack of Squeak? And I mean hack in the best way possible, of course. Dear Friends at Squeakland: I need to get a random number between two numbers to be determined as the result of some actions. Could you tell me how to get such result with the random tile function which does not accept a variable as its argument? I appreciate your help. PolloGus (Quito-Ecuador)

Sharing project inside the classroom

I am working in a project that gives, using Squeak, some special tools for the teacher in the classroom. In fact, this is a project for foreign language teacher. The teacher prepares a project with the vocabulary and grammar the student must use, gives him a subject, based on a known book, and the student must create something similar to a cartoon inside Squeak, using some of the tools included in squeakland image and some others I am developing. After this small brief, my doubts are coming thinking about how the teacher can give the information to the students. An immediate idea was publishing the project the teacher prepares in some swiki, and students can pick it up from the swiki. This is good in a perfect world, but internet access usually are slow and, due to Murphy's laws, use to be down just when the teacher begins the exercises. I would like to have something like this: - The teacher prepare the Squeak project, press a button and says 'I'am Mr. Smith'. - The students press a button in their squeak images and say 'look for Mr. Smith's project', and it gets loaded inside their squeak image and can begin to work immediately. So simple, so fast using the LAN classroom. I really don't know if this is already done, if there would be better ways to do it. Maybe most of the needed tools are already done and inside Squeak ¿netmorphs, collaborative tools?. Probably, Croquet would be the solution, but most classrooms don't have openGL cards in their computers... Can anybody put some light on my mind?

organization of net-squeak

If I'm not mistaken, the version of Squeak used by Squeakland is only loosely related to the version developed by the "squeak-dev" group. Further, serious problems have been reported [1] by people trying to use squeak-dev images for Squeakland purposes. We are missing an opportunity. There are hoards of developers in the squeak-dev group itching to hack on Squeak. I believe that with a little bit of organizational effort, those guys and the Squeakland group can synergize to produce a big Squeak code base that is stable, highly featureful, and (Squeakland's role) has a point to it. Don't overlook the squeak-dev guys too quickly, just because they are a bunch of gearheaded hacker types. In addition to making Squeak more reliable, they can provide additional options for Squeakland activities. Yes, they love to talk about alphabet soup--CORBA, XML-RPC, SMTP, ...--but they can also get Squeak talking to webcams, web services like Google maps, more file formats, instant messaging networks, and on and on. How do we move forward, if you agree? One possibility is to mimick successful groups such as Debian. Perhaps the publishing function can have a more detailed form. If details are filled in, then it's review for posting on high traffic pages. If details are missing, then it's put in an archive for later data mining (Try to answer "What gives the students difficulty that leaves partially completed projects?") Does the squeakland swiki still exist?

With all the informative posts, recently, I was wondering if Squeakland has a Swiki, where members can post followups or store useful content for all users. Something similar to the squeak developers swiki. We could also use a squakland swiki as a place to collectively write tutorials and provide hints. Is this possible to implement? Thanks, Dave

Hi, folks - We've just added a new feature to the Squeakland website. We call it "Etoy project of the month". Each month we'll feature a new etoy project, along with documentation on how to create it. We will feature projects from *you* -- so please share! If you have a project you, or your students have created, please send it -- along with a narrative on how and why it was created, i.e., the concepts it adresses, to projects(a)squeakland.org. We hope to build a great collection of projects for all to share. Kim

Possible EToys bug?

Hi, I created a simple sorting demo in EToys for a presentation. After building and implementing the first demo I created a copy of the Holder. This is a deep copy, not a sibling- the idea is to implement another sorting algorithm in the copy by changing its existing scripts, and then run it side by side with the original version. The bug I'm running into involves adding a new script to the new copy of the Holder. The "Holder1 startScript emptyScript" tile will not list my new script, until I go back and add a new script with the same name to the original Holder. I'm pretty sure that is not the desired behavior but I haven't been able to dig deep enough into the underlying code to find the problem. It appears to be looking back to the original copy to find the list of scripts which are available, when it should be looking at the scripts in the copy. The work-around is easy enough- add an empty script to the original Holder named the same as my new script- but if anyone has a fix, or can point me towards the general code I should be looking at, I would appreciate it.
