Many of those who know us as Squeakers, frequently send us questions.
Someone recently asked how to add music to an Etoys project.
The question was more specific. It had two attached files:
- An mp3 file with the music to be attached.
- The Etoys project they wanted to add it to.
There were two problems:
The incompatibility of the mp3 format with the XOs.
The music they sent us is copyrighted.
Will very much appreciate any comments that might help us, with either or both problems:
1) Best way of transferring an mp3 file to a format acceptable to the XOs.
2) Best places where children may download legally and without charge, music for their Etoys and other XO projects.
Thanks!!

I don't really know. There seems to be no painless way.

I pointed my kids to
But I have not tried it on an XO. All the content on that site is licensed under a Creative Commons license, made by people willing to share freely (though some rights may be reserved). Learn more about this:

Bert,
I found that by dragging an mp3 file to the Etoys desktop, you may play it but couldn´t do much beyond that point.
I am using Etoys 4.1.1 for Mac but more important would be to get advice for XO users.
Can you include it somehow in a script?
Thanks for pointing us to jamendo.com.
We received that same recommendation from
franmate@gmail.com
through another list in Spanish:
voluntarios y administradores OLPC para usuarios docentes olpc-sur@lists.laptop.org
Jamendo.com seems to be the best place.
I have to read it more carefully because all I found so far was where to pay to obtain legal music.
I need something to point out to school kids without any doubts in my mind it works and it is legal and free.
Very interesting the other link about Creative Commons.
Same thing, I have to read it more carefully.
Specifically I looked into their "International" tab and saw they have arrangements in several countries but not in Uruguay.
Bert, thanks for your comments and specially, thanks for sharing your kid´s video, it was a good example for the music but also was nice to see them enjoying their skating.

I asked in a previous message how to incorporate music I have in an mp3 file into an Etoys project.
I posted the same question in OLPC-Sur a quite active forum with many participants in several south american countries.
The answer that showed me the way, step by step, was received from Paolo Benini a Volunteer with the Plan Ceibal Support Network in Montevideo.
Paolo pointed out to a video by another RAP Ceibal Volunteer, Lino Bessonart from Ciudad de la Costa.
Paolo pointed me to several videos at
http://rapceibal.ning.com/page/materiales-1
Where it says "Audiovisuales ETOYS", Charla N°6, "Libro automático con música."
Lino puts a book together in the first part of this talk and adds the music in the second part.
The explanation is in Spanish but it is quite slow and detailed.
He constantly shows what he is doing so I don't think anyone with basic knowledge of Etoys, will have any problem to follow his explanation.
May we thank both Paolo and Lino as well as RAP Ceibal for allowing us once again to keep our promise to answer Etoys question.
We answer the very few things we know and so far, we have been able to find out through others the answers to the many things we don't know.
The payback is instantaneous, not only we feel good helping our friends but we learn ourselves.
This message also answers another question.
Some of the people at Squeakland were very much interested when I showed them the program for the Educational Talks in Montevideo last October 16th.
They wanted to know what was covered in these talks.
Not sure if these are the same talks but they are an excellent example of what was explained by Lino and several other volunteers.

you probably know this yet

They do not only have songs but also complete live concerts, interviews, radio shows... At least some of the content is CreativeCommons, all of it is free, and a lot of it is available as mp3 and ogg.
Cheers, Tom
