Hi Randy, thanks a lot for your help. I've tried all available compressions now. On the XO-1.5 recording works fine when I'm using Vorbis or GSM. A couple of times Etoys "crashed" after I moved the recording/recorder to the trash (no matter which compression.) I can't reproduce this behavior intentionally, though. Using no compression at all resulted in a pretty distorted recording containing nothing but noise. When I tried to reproduce it, it worked ok. Quite often there is a loud click sound when the recording is started in uncompressed mode. It seems that the first time I tried it this click somehow got stuck and produced the noise. No matter what compression I choose there is a heavy reverb on the recordings. I will try to find out how to install the Etoys update and see if that solves the issue. I got the following error message most of the times when I tried to close Etoys after it had crashed when I had used the Speex compression: "Some blocks which reference instance variables are included in this segment. These may fail when the segment is loaded if the class has been reshaped. What would you like to do?" Randy, there are a few teachers interested in this project. Too much to translate. I sent you copies of a few messages in Spanish. The most important questions for you so far: Apparently these teachers were expecting a go ahead probably from you. I told them, clarifying it was my own idea, to get started with lessons 1 and 2. At the end of Lesson 2 they would have their first message ready. Suggested they publish it as an Etoys project in the showcase. Then they will depend on you to make sure the Ojibwe children see it. Let me translate a message received today from Rosamel of Durazno: "How interesting! How many teachers wishing to participate! I would like to know how many native american children would be participating, how many teachers do they have, whether or not we would be able to exchange pictures of the places where they live and where we live. We are two teachers, María Barros and myself, 40 children, from Full Time School No. 35 in Durazno. Best regards to all, Rosamel" I suggested she uses her questions as the subject for a first message to the Ojibwe children. I told her my interpretation of your lessons summary which they now have in Spanish, is that the only rule is "No Words". Would very much appreciate your confirming or correcting what I said. Most important point is how to communicate with the Ojibwe children. My assumption is via Etoys projects in the Squeakland showcase, counting on you to make sure they see any projects in the showcase posted for them by the south american children. Please confirm. Etoys plugin hangs with Opera

Hi, The Etoys plugin (on my Windows 7 system) hangs with Opera. For example Opera opens a new tab with the URL http://squeakland.org/launcher/?http://squeakland.org/content/showcase/ever… but then goes no farther. The plugin works with Firefox, Chrome and Safari. If I remember correctly, version 4.0 of Etoys worked fine with Opera. Etoys Minute - Balance Scales

Balance Scales is part of a set of the ELVM (Etoys Library of Virtual Manipulatives) I am working on (feel free to add to the library by posting your projects on squeakland. Hi Steve, The one minute videos are becoming a very nice collection! Would it be okay if we link and/or embed them in the EtoysIllinois web site? We would add a Video Resources tab to the top of the home page. I think there are several on YouTube by Bert and some of the Swiss group that should be collected too. I tried making some videos this summer, they are harder to do than it seems at first glance. You are making it look very easy. weekly wow improvements

Hi everyone, This morning I put a few hours in on SQ-729 ... "go back in history when there's no wow for the week". Last week, the wow was an article from the website, which shouldn't happen. I've added extra checks to make sure the article-not-project thing can't happen again. I've also made it so that it'll go back in time if there's no ranked wow from the previous week, which means older projects will be highlighted. For the curious, last week's error was due to two things: first, there were no ranked articles for the previous week, and second, I must have made a faulty assumption months and months back where I set all article points to 1, even one's without a project attached. Also for the curious, the weekly wow algorithm is now: 1. START = two monday's ago 2. find a ranked project from the week starting on START 3. has this been a weekly wow before? if so, then ignore 4. if none found, START = a week earlier 5. goto 2 until it fails 10 times (ie, before sep 2009) 6. if it failed, don't send a weekly wow Anyway, we'll know if this actually works in three hours when the wow's get sent. Etoys Minute - Quick Guides

Kathleen, As the video says, "Mr. Steve sent me". Just watched the video. It is fantastic to see such a show of teamwork, great guides and a great video. Would like to post it in the Spanish language forums. We can accomplish several goals in one single step: - Tell about Etoys 4.1 and how easy it is to reach the guides through the question mark. - Tell about the Quick Guides also being available in Spanish. - Give the authorized opinion of a teacher actually using Etoys and the Quick Guides. - Very good message about teaching and about the very important point of having children in the class who know things the teacher doesn´t know yet. - Cash on the high regard many uruguayan teachers have for Kathleen and Etoys illinois as well as on her popularity among those who know her personally. Steve, you said recently something I was told many times: "The best is the best enemy of the good" The best would be to attempt to repeat exactly what you did but in Spanish. But I will never do it or at best I will start and never finish. The good would be to accompany my message with your english video and a written spanish transcript. Maybe it could be a means of telling Spanish speakers that English is not so difficult. I can do that, I have done it before using the captions feature offered by this video, listen in English, check the transcript if anything is not that clear, which I doubt will be necessary, you speak extremely clearly. My only question is whether or not I have missed some feature of the video. I was able to read the english captions and was offered a translation to South African. No mention of Spanish anywhere.
