Etoys, is it difficult or easy?

There was, recently, a very active discussion on this subject in the spanish language forums in which we participate. Today we posted a sort of summary, we translate below. The project How Many Pizzas (2010-sep-07 18:35 EDT) por Carlos Rabassa based on ideas by Daniel Ajoy and Paolo Benini <carlos> Resolving 2-variable equation contains details of the problem someone proposed, that originated the thread, and the solutions found by members of the forum. Here is the translation of today´s post: ================ One project, three names, three levels of perceived difficulty I am referring to the pizzas problem. I quote it here from the post of a few days ago by Daniel Ajoy: "A small pizza costs 120 pesos. A large pizza costs 160 pesos. You spent a total of 920 pesos. How many small pizzas and how many large ones did you buy?" A first solution was proposed [in the forum]. Only multiplication and addition knowledge was required to explain it or to understand it. The level of difficulty perceived by the members of the forum, was that of the middle level courses in elementary school, when we were given problems to solve as homework. ¿Do you remember? [the problems] had three parts: Pose, Resolution and Response A second solution was then offered. It used an XO computer like the ones elementary school children use. It used SocialCalc, a program distributed in the computers that allows users to create tables and do calculations. The perceived difficulty level was still suitable for elementary school, maybe high school students. It was still a problem to be solved by those students receiving Plan Ceibal's computers. During the following days, while we were trying to find out how to resolve it using Etoys, there was an active exchange of messages in the forums. We were trying to write something in a format adaptable to Etoys while reading several messages per day. Our mind was still floating on the memories from elementary school days. We recalled the advice from our third grade (??) teacher for solving the problems she assigned as homework. "Keep reading the pose of the problem I gave you, repeatedly, until you understand it". Great, the pose of the problem was clearly stated in Daniel's message. We read his message time and again. As the next step, we tried to write as we did in our elementary school days, the worksheet we had to present to the teacher when the homework was due. We were thinking of the "resolution" section, between the posing of the problem and the statement of the solution. Otherwise, the teacher would return it to us marked "Incomplete, resolution is missing". What we were writting was getting closer and closer to what, years later, in high school, we used to call "an equation". When the time came up to fill in the Etoys card for the new project adding "labels" to help those searching for projects, the word "equation" was already embedded in my mind. At that point I had no doubts left, after all my reading in the forums, that I was in front of a 2-variable equation with more than one solution. The same original problem, posed by Daniel with very simple words just a few days earlier, had already gone up to a perceived difficulty level that would not allow anyone to get close to it without having completed at least high school. It would also require to remember well what we learned in math, no longer called arithmetic, maybe in courses including the word algebra. It was good that when I read messages in the forums mentioning "Diophantine equations", I checked Wikipedia right away. This is the definition I found: "In mathematics, a Diophantine equation is an indeterminate polynomial equation that allows the variables to be integers only". I thought, "I shouldn´t introduce unnecessary complications. It basically says they are the same thing as a 2-variable equation". And this is how my thoughts of including this fancy words in the name of the project or among the tags, ended. Within a few more days, I will have completely forgotten, for the second time in my life, that diophantine equations exist. If we had called the pizzas project "Resolution of Diophantine Equations", no one would have had any doubts about how difficult Etoys is. Someone would have proposed without finding any opposition, to remove Etoys from the Plan Ceibal computers and to recommend its use only with post grade mathematics university students. Imagine now what if, we had taken Daniel´s original pose of the problem and to be politically correct and help our friends at INDA, National Nutrition Institute, we had removed the word pizza, generally associated with fast food, and replaced it with apples and oranges, like the ones we should eat five servings per day. We would have had no doubts we were dealing with an elementary school level program. At least this would have been the case for those from my times, who had to resolve an endless number of problems involving apples and oranges. Conclusion: If we start a discussion on whether resolving a certain problem is easy or difficult, rather than attempting to resolve it, the conclusion will depend entirely on those we talk to and the words they use, rather than on the problem itself. This is nothing more than my personal opinion. I am open to listen to other opinions. I clearly understand and accept this is not the ultimate and only truth. As usual, we would be particularly interested in hearing opinions from teachers and other educators. Very special thanks, once again to: Daniel Ajoy who brought the problem for the first time to one of our forums and to Paolo Benini who offered the first solution using the XO computer through SocialCalc. Till soon, Carlos Rabassa Voluntario Red de Apoyo al Plan Ceibal Montevideo, Uruguay ================ Note: The expression "Y se va la segunda ..." is used in a form of art typical of Uruguay, called "Payada". Is a contest between two guitar players. Player #1 starts the match by reciting some improvised story, accompanied by his own guitar playing. All of a sudden he poses a question to the other player and goes into dead silence. The other player has to listen very carefully, understanding the story, waiting for this unexpected stop. At that point he has to start reciting his response to the question, without delays and without hesitation. The one who stops for too long or who doesn't come up with a response that answers the question with words that go well with the music he is playing, is declared the loser without any further considerations. The literal translation of the above expression is, "And the second one [second step of this contest] starts here ..." He is inviting the second player to continue. There might be some inaccuracies in my explanation, I'm not an expert on this subject. Comments, are still very much welcome, on the subject of this thread. Learn about Speech Bubbles in: Etoys 4.1 Release Candidate 1

Hi all, One of the great new additions coming to Etoys in release 4.1 is speech bubbles. Not only can you talk in words, but also in graphics and animations. Any object can be placed in a speech bubble. Even an object of objects (like a playfield). Try the project just posted at: http://www.squeakland.org/showcase/project.jsp?id=10274 to learn more. You will need to download the Release Candidate 4.1 (found at: http://squeakland.org/download/) to run the project. Etoys 4.1 Release Candidate 1

Bert, just downloaded and installed Etoys 4.1 RC1, the version to install in Macintosh computers. Everything looks great. A few days ago, through one of Kathleen´s Quick Guides I became aware of the existence of Thread Navigator In case others read this message and, as was my case until recently, they are not familiar with this tool, this is how to find it: Open Supplies Box Open Obejct Catalog Clic on Multimedia Drag Thread Navigator out to the work area. I tried a few things with it and is extremely interesting. It has one problem: I can hardly see it, it shows as a very small button with many things in it. Is it too late to ask if you could make this interesting tool bigger and less crowded, making it easier to see it?? Looking at the projects in the Squeakland Showcase, I see the Book is probably the most popular of all tools. I was thinking those project authors who used the Book, might have accomplished better results with less work by using the Thread Navigator. It seems possible to link as many projects as pages you would have in a book and putting all the content directly on the world rather than on the book´s pages??? Special thanks for two items you have included, which I still have to study more, the tile to create flaps and how to stop sounds. I received in the past responses from you to my questions on those two subjects. Your responses were excellent but now, having the tiles has to be much better. Thanks. Etoys 4.1 Release Candidate 1 Toggle

Hi, If you click the 'Toggle' icon in the Navigator Bar, the NavBar disappears but does not reappear when the icon is clicked, just a black bar shows with the icon moved to the left edge. Bert, The Quick Guide MenusMakeNewFlap has been removed and replaced with a new guide but it still shows in the index with the message 'guide is missing'. The new guide about flaps is: SuppliesAdd-aNewFlap and it is in the index and is okay. A few unexpected behaviors of the new My Flaps flap using the flaps white menu: 1.if I select 'cling to left', both the tab and flap go to the left edge but, if I then choose 'lower right' in the 'extras' menu, the tab moves to the lower right but the flap stays on the left, they are disconnected; this is confusing. 2. the 'cling to' menu does not change information from 'current position left' when the extra menu command lower right is used. 3. if 'center' is selected the tab goes to the center of the world but is disconnected from the flap. 4. extras. . . another kind of problem example: bottom left the tab goes to the left but when the tab is clicked to open the flap, the flap opens and it covers the tab. Then the flap can't be closed. Bert, thanks for bringing this subject back to our attention. I just translated about ten words to Spanish: (Will continue my message after this copy and paste. 3 Arc-circle defined by three points. I am not confident at all using the page. It would be sad to put some effort and its going to waste because I did something wrong. Last time I tried I abandoned after getting quite confused. Today, just the opposite, it looks too easy to be true. It lets me write what I want and apparently saves it automatically. Looks like I am permanently logged in. I am afraid if I log out I will not be able to get back in. At no point was I asked to save anything. What happens with these words I did, can someone else come in half an hour later and change everything I did? Looks like they will not be offered for translation after I do them. I used three buttons, I hope I am doing it right: SUBMIT when I am confident I wrote the correct translation. SUGGEST if I wrote something but not quite sure about my translation. SKIP to do just that, do not translate and go to the next one without wasting time. I imagine this is the most effective way of doing this job, translating isolated words. Of course having the word completely out of the context in which it is used doesn´t allow the translator to have much confidence in his own translation. Thanks for any comments. May we share with you the procedure we have been following lately to prepare translations. It is based in two ideas I received from two good friends. I use http://tradukka.com/ as my English to Spanish and Spanish to English dictionary. It is also good for translations between many other languages. It works well and it is fast. It is free. The only limitation is it doesn't accept long texts. Long texts have to be divided in portions of not more than about two paragraphs or, you have to pay. I frequently use it to look up just one word. Changing between translations from Spanish or into Spanish is very fast and easy. I became aware of this tool through Dr. Luis Osín of Israel. For some time we both were students at Montevideo's Engineering School. I also use the online dictionary from the Spanish Royal Academy, the safe keepers of the Spanish language: http://buscon.rae.es/draeI/html/cabecera.htm If you have not taken some time to use and explore this dictionary, may we suggest you do. The Academy has abandoned its traditional inflexibility as far as accepting new words and modernizing the language. The online dictionary includes words that only recently became commonly used. Example: it shows both "computadora" and "ordenador". Both words show "computer" as one of their multiple meanings. Attention Spanish teachers, the dictionary says: "La palabra compu no está en el Diccionario." (The word compu is not in the Dictionary). Maybe someone wishes to propose it is added as a word in common use in Uruguay. Interesting, there are several words used in some countries only. Example: it shows three words with the same meaning, each used only in some countries, "pibe", "gurí" y "botija", all meaning "niño" or boy. Another intersting situation shown: One word with several different meanings depending on the country. Example: "guagua". Someone told us with surprise about a newspaper article describing how a "guagua" had a collision with a cyclist who ended up fighting for his life in a hospital. To her, "guagua" meant a baby. To the reporter who wrote the article it meant a bus. I also constantly use an online English - English dictionary. The one I prefer is: http://www.merriam-webster.com/ There are many others, as well as similar dictionaries for other languages. I use Firefox, the free browser that works very well with all traditional computers. I learned about Firefox through my former classmate, Pedro Vilanova, an electro-mechanical engineer. The multiple tabs feature he pointed out at that time was a novelty, now is also availabe in Chrome and probably other browsers. The multiple tabs allow to keep several websites open at the same time and to jump among them very easily. I usually keep three tabs with three open sites: - Tradukka to go from English to Spanish and viceversa. - Spanish Dictionary. - English Dictionary. Sometimes in a fourth tab I keep the Google Doc I am translating. While I don't need them, I minimize the window to have a cleaner screen to work with Etoys or with an off-line word processor. With Etoys, I follow the guidelines of its own translation procedure. We plan to cover this subject in a future message. With word processors I follow a procedure similar to that of Etoys: I make a copy of the original file and rename it with the name I want for the finished translation. Then I work with the new document, adding short portions of translated text and deleting the corresponding portions of the original text. I imagine this system might be useful to people with all levels of command of the foreign language. I believe it can be used by the desperate person who has received a message that seems to be important but is written in a foreign language which he doesn't know at all. I believe it could help professional translators who, for legal reasons, have to come up with a perfect translation. Or to the professional translator of literary works who may achieve results with very different quality levels depending on how much effort they put in selecting each word for the translated text. And of course, It helps all those like us, with varied levels of knowledge of the foreign language, who translate because of the need or just the satisfaction of communicating with foreigners. My Fellow Squeakers: Let´s translate

Some key words guaranteed to ignite a hot discussion in any forum anywhere in Latin America: Globalization. Multinational sets up for business in Latin America. Mercosur and other common markets. Islam. Israel. Gaza. Imperialism. Colonialism. Uruguayan diaspora. Department 20. Advice from two leaders, in government and in education, in two countries closely connected to Etoys: From President Mujica of Uruguay (with some details added by my imagination): Let´s stop discussing whether or not English is the language of imperialism or colonialism. Let´s focus on observing how the chinese use this language, which is not theirs: - They use it to communicate among themselves in a country with many dialects. - They use it to avoid wasting time and energy creating new words and expressions that already exist in the world of technology. - They use it to go out into the world and successfully conquer new markets for their products and services. From Dra. Lea Fagundes, from UFRGS University, Porto Alegre, during her farewell speech closing the Squeakfest Brasil 2009 international conference: And now, go to study English! Some resented such advice on a Saturday afternoon when they were making plans to go dancing and having fun. But her words impacted us all to the point we still remember them more than one year later. ¿What is the subject connected to all this, on which I believe we will all agree? The use of foreign languages and the translation of both, papers in the field of education as well as commercial and political proposals, are essential in the reality of today's world. The good news for Squeakers is: Etoys offers a very powerful tool to translate our projects, "translatable text". It suits collaboration very well. The ones who write and the one or those who translate, don't necessarily have to be the same person or live in the same country! More to come on this important subect in future messages. In the meantime, I leave you with two examples I believe illustrate the subject of translation in Etoys well. How can I get an Event Theatre recording to play with a script?

I want to have an Event Theatre recording play when I turn to a new page in a book. I know I can change the "When this script should run?" from normal to opening, that will cause the script to fire when I open a new page, but how do I get the Event Theatre to start playing? Thanks, Stephen
